Fish first - great philosophy. 👍🏻 My pond is 15 x 10 x 5.5 ft deep with four returns resulting in a decent current providing exercise for the fish but not overwhelming. Not exactly what you described but works very well.

It's the only philosophy for success. Sounds pretty similar and nice shape to the pond.

I built my.pond in that exact way 15 years ago and it's still going strong and works perfectly 😊I've never been a fan of creating masses of water movement with air domes etc...they are carp not trout😂. Exellent advice as always

Ricky get info as always. While on this subject on a rectangular pond with the the return in this way where would you poistion your bottom drain. ? Canter or down to the other end of the pond. Pond size of 12x6x4 👍

In a pond of that size I would still position a single bottom drain in the middle.

Thank you Ricky for the more in depth explanation, ss you know I indulge in daydreaming how I will build my next pond (by the way still very happy with the current one). With the long pond design where would you position the surface skimmer? I know it is probably surplus to your indoor requirements but I think few would feel it is not a requirement in a regular koi pond. If I build a really long pond I would be tempted to put a feeder on each end and have them give food alternating, so maybe the skimmer should go in the middle of one of the long sides? By the way nice Japanese but English subtitled visit to SFF and Kentaro san spills some of his methods

I'm not really the one to ask about skimmers as I think they're more of a hinderance especially in ponds where auto feeders are being used for raising. If I had to choose I'd go in the middle of one of the long walls. If you choose to go with a skimmer the gravity ones with a 3-4" outlet are your best option.
