  • Welcome to Episode 76 of The Nishikigoi Journal, where we dive deep into the ever-evolving journey at Ricky Stoddart's koi farm. It’s been a whirlwind since my return from Japan, and the last few weeks have been nothing short of intense. Today, I’m giving you an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the highs, the challenges, and the big plans shaping the future of my farm.
We kick things off with an update on the ponds and some remarkable koi selections. The spotlight is on my beloved NND DK Shiro Utsuri collection, which has grown into a dreamy lineup of striking patterns and developing sumi. I’m also sharing updates on my Sakamaki Ginrin Kohaku and Ginrin Showa - two stunning pieces that highlight the incredible progress we’re making.
Next, we take a look at the logistical chess game happening across the farm. With ponds at capacity and incoming shipments on the horizon, I’m shuffling fish, preparing spaces, and making tough calls to balance growth and business priorities. It’s all about maintaining the high standards you’ve come to expect, while keeping the operation running smoothly.
But it’s not all smooth sailing. I share a raw moment as I deal with a stunning Karashigoi facing an unexpected health challenge. It’s a reminder of the realities of koi keeping at this level - the dedication, problem-solving, and care required to keep every fish thriving.
The highlight of this episode? A rare and quirky Doitsu Asagi from Otsuka that’s stolen the show. Its unique Aragoke-style scales and vivid beni development make it a standout addition to the farm. These are the moments that fuel my passion - discovering and nurturing one-of-a-kind koi that push the boundaries of the craft.
On top of it all, I’m tackling infrastructure projects to expand the farm’s capacity and improve efficiency. From upgrading outdoor ponds to building a massive new greenhouse, every decision is a strategic move to keep growing while maintaining the exceptional quality my farm is known for.
This episode is packed with insights, surprises, and a glimpse into the challenges and joys of running a high-end koi operation. Whether you’re here for the stunning fish, the behind-the-scenes look, or just to share in the journey, there’s something for everyone in this week’s journal.
Thank you for joining me on this adventure. Your support means the world as I continue to share the beauty and complexity of koi keeping. Be sure to like, comment, and subscribe to stay updated on all the latest from the farm.

Great look into other parts of koi dealing. There’s definitely a lot that goes into it that most koi keepers don’t understand. And what a cheeky heron you had.

Very good behind the scenes video of the good and bad of the koi business. That last Asagi would be VERY interesting to watch how it develops if you are able to keep it for the next couple of years. I’ve never seen one like that before and Asagi are one of my favorite varieties.

As you know I’ve had a big problem with a bacterial issue. My remaining sick koi are on antibiotic injections from my vet. I have to do the injections every 3 days. But the koi are healing
