This ia a great explanation of how the Port (connect) works. There are hundreds of YT hours wasted on this gadget that tell me absolutely nothing about it. It gives me an ice cream headache.!!. I have a Sonos speaker system and a 1970's Marantz amp. (2325).....I wanna use a Dac for streaming music and a turntable that both input to the amp and output via the Port to my Sonos speakers.....In just a few minutes you have cured my head ache.....thankyou

That is one awesome looking amp. Nothing quite like a big volume knob

Thanks, it’s an impressive bit of gear that’s for sure. I’ve thought about moving it on, because it takes so much space, but then I use it and it’s such a pleasure to use and I forget about those thoughts! Yamaha CA-1010. I should do a video just going through the amp in detail.

It’s too beautiful to get rid of

Great thanks for this! Honestly I don't completely understand how it works. I have a vintage Harman Kardon 430 Twin Power. Would this work on that? I'm not able to choose recording source but it has two tape outs, so I figure I could hook the Sonos up to that.

    a total beauty

It is. It does dominate any room or piece of furniture it sits on though. Unfortunately I don't have a great spot for it in my home at the moment and it is currently in storage.

Hi, thank you so much - I'm doing the same process for my turntable.. CAN'T manage volume with big button on my technics SU V8 any thoughts? What are your Line-in source level? and Line-out settings?

Hi Ted; I have set my system up similar to your instructions (using the Sonos Port and a Rega TT) but there is a 75ms delay between the Sonos speakers and the legacy speakers hooked up to the amp that I am unable to get rid off. Within the Sonos app you can extend this delay to as much as 2000ms but the minimum is 75ms. Why did you not experience this issue I wonder?

Hi Steve, I seem to remember a comment on my other video on reducing lag through the software, but can't find it to reference. I have avoided this lag because the amp is playing the signal from the connect (which can sync with other SONOS devices without lag), not directly from the cassette deck (or turntable in your case). The lag is unavoidable if you are listening to the main amp using the signal directly from your Rega simultaniously sending that signal back out to the sonos and then grouping with other sonos devices. Either always listen through the connect or use the rec out feature to switch to this setup when you need to sync to other zones. It's the bit at 2:30

@@stephenjlr Thanks for the reply. Yes, agreed. With the setup and amp I have (NAD 3240PE) I think the delay is unavoidable as I don't have a rec out feature; just a line out from the amp. It's pretty much the same delay you get if you plug a TV into a stereo amp and you are not using an optical cable. I changed the Audio Compression mode in the Sonos App from Automatic to Uncompressed but no discernible difference. May buy a preamp at some point and plug the TT directly into the Port. Anyway, thanks again for replying.

@@sxm10 Yes without the vintage amp features that would be the only way. turntable>pre-amp>PORT>amp. And if you want to listen to your turntable direct it's a matter of swapping over some rca cables.

Thanks for putting this together Ted! Can you confirm if I'd be able to replicate this? I have a turntable (no phono) and a Onkyo TX-8020 receiver that has a phono in, tape in and tape out. Based on your video, my signal would be: Vinyl > Receiver (phono in) || Port/Connect (Out) > Receiver (Tape In), Receiver (Tape Out) > Port/Connect (In).
    does this sound correct?

    • @stephenjlr

Does the ONKYO have 2 tape in/outs? Otherwise you might need to put the port connect out > Onkyo AUX in. So your streaming set up would be having the record out selector set to PHONO (Ie what signal do you want to send out to "record") and your input selector set to AUX. Ie, your amp is sending the phono signal back out to the connect (what it thinks is the tape deck you're recording to), but separately it is playing to the passive speakers the signal that is coming from the connect.
      So your signal pathway is
      For streaming:
Vinyl>Onko>ConnectIN>ConnectOUT>Onko>Passive Speakers (And simultaneously any other sonos unit you group)
      For local Vinyl
      Vinyl>Onko>Passive Speakers.
      Good luck!

Cool. But does the Sonos Connect have a phono pre-amp built in?
