    If you cannot get the fiber spun, there is Alpaca Insulation factory in Ohio that makes insulation from lower grade fiber. 🖐😉

      Oh wow thats super interesting I bet that would be some really warm insulation

      They are SUCH nice dream animals they're so sweet and quiet and calming. We felt so lucky to have them this year while the whole world was on literal fire we could head out back and just be around their calm and quiet selves and it was AWESOME!

      @@OldReddingFarm Agreed. Alpacas very meditative just to watch them, also very communicative. I am still drooling about my own ones, but for now I am buying and processing the fiber by hand, having a lot of fun, including final handspining (without spindle) and knitting hats, mittens, scarves. Still keep my mind open to learn more about this beautiful creature and very thankful for you to shearing the video.My question: do you sell row fleece (blanket) and how much you charge for one bag plus shipping to another state(approximately)?
      Stay safe and happy Holidays.🎄🎁🎆

    I think the mineral you were pondering on toxicity between goats and alpacas is copper. Same with housing goats and sheep together. Easily solved by copper bolusing your goats 2-3 X’s a year depending on the goat. Sorry I’m a goat nerd! I enjoyed this video! Made me miss having camelids!

    • @OldReddingFarm
      @OldReddingFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yes copper thats right nailed it. We have talked a few times about maybe getting angora goats some day - so if we ever do we know who we will call with our questions

    Great informative video bro 👍 especially for those interested in keeping a small quantity. I’m considering a few simply because we’re starting a farm stay and experience and it’ll be an additional attraction here at the farm, but that’ll be a bit in the future.

    We have thought about these for goat protection. Our Jenny was too aggressive with the wife and kids. It may be cooper.

      Alpaca are not like llamas, they're not the best choice for guardian animals.

  • @OutdoorswithVance

    We have two Llamas, how do they react to cold weather

    • @OldReddingFarm
      @OldReddingFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We don't have to do anything extra for them in the cold weather. Do llamas need heat or blankets or anything in the cold?

  • @TheBigBlueHouseHomestead
    @TheBigBlueHouseHomestead 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Super informative! Question. How do you find someone to shear them? I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I move on to livestock.

    • @OldReddingFarm
      @OldReddingFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the guy that we used was recommended to us by the person we purchased the alpacas from which would work if you get yours locally. If not there are usually facebook groups with lots of good information, we are in CT so on top of "Alpaca everything" we are in "alpaca owners of CT" so we can swap local info like shearers, fiber mills, sales on feed / hay availability etc for things super local to us vs nation / world wide like in "alpaca everything"

    They are so cute! Yeah a lot of times it’s worth it to have an expert! Time is $$

    • @OldReddingFarm
      @OldReddingFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah their ability to do it faster for sure as well as to just have an expert not stress out the animals more than necessary.

    Wow thats good to know bout the boy and girls! So do suggest an hour or 2 together and then seperate! Are they hard to raise from baby? How long do an alpaca female have their period for? Are they like other animals but is it easy to bond with them? Insurance for alpaca. If so how much in general?

    My concerns are mostly about keeping them in fruit orchard like sheeps. Would they rather be interested in eating tree bark like goats?

    • @OldReddingFarm
      @OldReddingFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do think they would nibble on the branches. If the trees are young the other thing that I know would happen is the alpacas will walk over the trees and bend them over and use them to scratch their bellies. At least thats what our ladies do with the few young trees we have in their pasture.

    Our 15 year old alpaca (has a 5 month old cria) turned out to be bone thin after her shearing. I have added red cell to her water, and am feeding alpaca feed, sweet feed ( 12%) and first cutting frass hay. We have acres of lush grass, but I want to keep an eye on her, watch what she is eating and soon wean her daughter so she can put on weight. She is wormed, and looks alert, but oh so thin. Any ideas? Thanks! Kathy

    • @OldReddingFarm
      @OldReddingFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard of a lot of people adding beet pulp shreds to the menu to help alpacas put on weight. We haven't had to do that but might be worth looking into. Glad you tested for worms. Good luck!

    Goats need more copper than other animals.

    • @OldReddingFarm
      @OldReddingFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes ! I wish goats had a more similar diet and parasite load to alpacas so we could keep both safely

  • @BookieLukie21
    @BookieLukie21 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Copper. Goats need copper in their minerals that can make sheep and alpaca sick.
