  • Minimum VFR Flight In Forest Fire Smoke - Give Hope Wings Expedition Episode #1
    This flight is part of the Give Hope Wings Fundraiser in support of Hope Air.
    I'm flying in a 2,086nm fundraiser for Hope Air, an organisation that helps lower income Canadians or those who live in remote areas access healthcare by providing flights (through private pilots and airlines) to larger urban centres.
    If you wish to donate to Hope Air: support.hopeai...
    To learn more about the Hope Air Charity: hopeair.ca/imp...
    But sometimes the best laid plans go sideways when Mother Nature and forest fire smoke get in the way.

    Knowing that I'll never be able to fly due to medical issues, I really appreciate being able to join you viacariously through the youtube (as weird as that is!). Thanks for taking us along, I am sure most of us appreciate your effort.

    Sault St. Marie has always been a favorite place for me being from Michigan. One of my favorite photographs I have ever taken was from the American side of a bush plane flying over the bush plane museum.

      We lost one of Oregon's premier old-growth stands at Opal Creek in the 2020 fires. I never made it up there to see it, I always thought there was plenty of time to get around to it. I hope the fire spares yours.

    There have been large fires burning in northern Saskatchewan for about a month as well. It has been bad on and off. I was forced to descend pretty significantly from my planned altitude on a cross country Friday afternoon.

    I wonder if that ship at 18:20 is the Arthur M. Anderson. The last ship to see and be in contact with the SS Edmund Fitzgerald that sank back in 1975. Looks like it.

    Thanks for sharing the flights in such conditions. Normally I just stay on the ground. As for flying over water, I always don my lifejacket on the ground if im flying over water as I doubt my ability to put it on in flight while managing an emergency and maintain proper control of the aircraft, especially as a single pilot at lower altitudes.

    Intense flight. What is the fuel situation at CYOO?

    • @GlensHangar
      @GlensHangar  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't encounter any fuel trouble along the way - I have heard from other pilots that some airports had delivery trouble and 100LL is in short supply. Oshawa seems to be fine, as was Sault, Elliot Lake, Sudbury, and Kingston.
      I also have the MoGas STC on C-FMVU, so ethanol free MoGas is always an option.

      I don't have an instrument rating, I've thought about it a few times but C-FMVU isn't equipped. If I come up with the budget to put in the last piece of equipment I may go ahead and IFR train.

  • @leafywalker
    @leafywalker ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Glen: I noticed around 5:45, as you were landing at Goderich, you said "tanks on both". I'm assuming that means that the fuel tank selector is set to use from both tanks. How does this jive with your previous video detailing your engine trouble (th-cam.com/video/ocpjanTCPAY/w-d-xo.html) in which you said you were always going to alternate between the left and right tanks on 30 minute intervals? Is the protocol different for landing than once you're at altitude, and if so why? (I am not a pilot, I know nothing about flying and only a little about engines, this is pure curiosity for me with no judgement of any kind.)

    • @GlensHangar
      @GlensHangar  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Tanks on Both for take-off and landing is 'best practice', but as soon as I get to cruising altitude I switch to single tank, and switch between every 30 minutes. The idea is that in that initial / last phase of flight maximum available fuel could be needed, and if you've managed the tanks well, there should be no vapour bubbles.

    • @leafywalker
      @leafywalker ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GlensHangar Got it! That makes total sense, thank you for taking the moment to explain it.

    • @MSI2k
      @MSI2k ปีที่แล้ว

      When on the ground, air and other non-homogenous chemicals in the fuel that may have been 'dissolved', remains dissolved. Soon as you climb to thousands of feet, the low pressure outside means fuel can 'boil' somewhat and the dissolved things (and even the fuel itself) can transform material state and form vapor. This starts off small and can collect and form a bubble which can form a air lock, preventing some or all flow of fuel into the engine. That results in wildly inconsistent fuel-to-air ratios, leading to incomplete burns and misfires. Starved engine midflight is no joke.
      But as you near the ground during landing, the pressure increases and risk of airlock is mitigated somewhat. And as you have little safety margins close to the ground, relying on one tank is dangerous.
