I have watched a lot of TV in my 48 years. My first love was Sopranos, then Mad Men and then Deadwood came along. I have no hesitation in saying that Deadwood is the finest TV ever written and produced. I am not expecting it will ever be surpassed either.

The beauty and language of Deadwood sings to me. It’s like wonderful, yummy cake that I just can’t get enough of. And the obscenity is just the cherry on the top of that dessert! Let alone the haunting music……mmmmmmmmmmm!!

Part of the joy of Deadwood is finding another human who has never seen it and watching it get into their bloodstream to the point where they ask you if they can borrow your Blu-ray set so they can binge-watch the entire series.
Swehajin coksukka... what obscene language? That's just classic Mandarin. Absolutely one of the best shows ever produced for the small screen. From every facet of a show, the words, the ones who say them, the places where they are spoken, and the willingness to get down in that mud (metaphorically or literally with those pigs) and tell a story of love, conflict, change, and redemption. Just a masterpiece.
This man is the best writer of all time….the parallels between all his series are unique yet identifiable. I’ve watched all his work countless times and continue to be in awe….
I think Deadwood's the best dramatic production in any format, at least that I've seen. The language, my god. Shakespeare was pretty good I guess but he didn't write for Americans. The tender stuff made me cry. The cruelty was ice cold. Swearengen's sense of the world pervades the narrative perspective without the show being first person. Every actor knowing they were doing something very special and giving everything they had. Just incredibly entertaining.
Couldn't agree more. Never listened to an interview with him before till now. The way he uses vernacular and palette of words to paint a masterpiece is just captivating. You can see the interviewer Carridine just in awe and yearning in anticipation of what undiscovered gems are about to come to form next.
This guy almost speaks TOO intelligently. It almost spooks me out that he now has Alzheimer's. How can someone with a mind so unique, and so intelligent, get Alzheimer's? It's crazy to me. He's probably one of the most intelligent, and interesting human beings, I've ever seen. Sad that he's gotta go through that. We need more minds like his. They don't come around often.

Milch is a fascinating dude. And I’m proud to say He’s from my hometown of Buffalo. I’m saddened by his current health condition that deprives us of his works/talents. Deadwood is the epitome of rewatch quality. All these years later and the series means something completely different to me now than it did when I was 20 years younger.
The key to the key to good TV is to avoid repeating themes. Deadwood, sopranos, and breaking bad excelled at these. Walking dead, justified, Yellowstone, etc fell very very short in that regard, and that’s why they’ll never be on the level of the aforementioned top 3.

I think you were either literate or illiterate. If you were literate you probably had a decent command on the spoken word. King James Bible, Shakespeare, Milton etc were read and listened to rather commonly.

a master class in character development. each and every one, and not just the main characters, even the minor characters developed such depth in both character and relationships.
I haven't watched it myself (I follow someone who does and thus where a bulk of my knowledge comes from), but is a shame so many boomers who pretend they have virgin ears get all ruffled because of the vulgarity, and didn't give the series a chance. I try to tell my dad what's it's trying to do, but he's SO DAMN fixated on "every other word is the C word, or the F word." (especially when he swears a blue streak at any mild inconvenience) when it's true they didn't use the modern vulgarity we know as swearing, Much of their swears at the time would be considered very tame by our standards, so he substituted modern vulgarity to convey the same impact to the audience.
A little more complicated than that. Basically *everybody* was to blame. The end of the show was a combination of factors 1) It was the result of corporate infighting over profits. HBO is a division of Warner Media - and Warner was co-producing "Deadwood" with Paramount studios. Long story short, through the 3 seasons, Warner and Paramount were bitching to each other about who would share a larger percentage of the profits from the show. They reached an impasse in negotiations before the 4th season was supposed to be written/go into production and both Warner and Paramount, they both walked away from the table. But it wasn't just that. 2) The second reason was that the actors' contracts were ONLY for 3 seasons, with an OPTION for a fourth season. "Deadwood" was never OFFICIALLY "canceled" - the actors' contracts simply weren't picked up for a fourth season - which was basically HBO's passive-aggressive way of canceling the show, as they told the actors that they were free from their contracts now and could do what they want - which meant a lot of them going to different opportunities, since it *looked* like a fourth season wouldn't happen - higher paying opportunities, as the show had made stars of its leads. BUT - and a lot of people don't know this: 3) HBO really *DID* try to keep it going - but they wanted Milch to start work on his "John From Cincinnatti" series at the same time - so they offered Milch a 6-episode 4th and final season of "Deadwood" - basically HALF of the usual 12, to finish up the show in a proper way that while not ideal, would have at least given it a more proper "ending". David Milch DECLINED to do that. He COULD have said yes, and we could have had a 6-episode fourth season. INSTEAD, Mich told them, "I'll do TWO 2-hour movies" to wrap up the show. And HBO was totally game for it at the time. In other words, instead of a fourth season, we would have had 2 Deadwood "movies" with the actors all still in their prime. The PROBLEM was, BECAUSE Warner/Paramount/HBO never picked up the actors' contracts during the negotiations mentioned above, not enough of the actors were available anymore to do it and gone on to other projects. LASTLY, number 4) RATINGS. The show's first season had a decent 4.5 million viewers. That number declined by HALF for its second season. And then even WORSE for its third season. In other words, it was an expensive show that nobody was watching, which equals very little profit in return for Warner and Paramount - especially when the show was constantly going over budget - by a *lot* - with each episode costing almost $5 million - and no ratings to justify it. So - yeah. A LOT of contributing factors ended the show.
A wonderful series that I will rewatch one day. My only regret is that because it was partially bound by/to history, the last season became a build-up to an anti-climax.

Great show- as long as you can set aside the huge deviations from fact pertaining to the historical figures used as characters. Some of the imagined reality was trivial, but some dishonored the memories and lives of the real people. Do their descendants care? Maybe not. But would you like it if it was you being fictionalized for the purposes of a more compelling story?
