There's so much confusion when it comes to progesterone and progestins. These 2 hormones are not the same. They have different benefits and side effects. They are not interchangeable in practice and shouldn't be interchangeable in our hormone vocabulary!

Great information. I am almost 54 and started having heavy periods 5 years ago and gained about 10 pounds, most of it seems to be in my stomach area, and my Dr put me on LoLo Estrin. She tests my FSH and estrogen once a year and they always come back in the normal range. I wanted off the synthetic estrogen so 2 months ago she put me Errin, which is progestin. My naturopath tested my hormones while I was off the pill and my progesterone was at the low end of normal while my estrogen was still in the normal range. My plan is to go off Errin and have a uterine ablation for the heavy periods and then try progesterone. My naturopath suggested I try to get my hormones balanced before deciding on an ablation but I travel for work and can't chance having a heavy period every 3 weeks.

Thank you! I just had my mirena removed because I'm sure that it was triggering my depression and anxiety. I also felt fatigued all day but struggled with sleep at night. I thought that the mirena was progetorone and I didn't understand why I felt like that. It makes sense now that since it was synthetic, my body wasn't getting natural "feel good" progesterone.

Mirena turned me into a monster lol and a bloated one at that with bad headaches. I think it’s all trial and error with birth control. We all respond so different sometimes to the same product

Thank you so much for this video Dr. Garrett! I started on Estrogel and 100 mg of progesterone about 7 weeks ago and I can't seem to get rid of a headache since I started. I'm guessing it's the progesterone but I'm not certain. Any suggestions?

Thank you for making this video. I'm 45 years. I had a hysterectomy 6 years ago, my ovaries/uterus removed. My dr has me on .625 premarin. He recently put me on 100mg progesterone capsules for night. I started having sleep issues 6 months ago. I want to start feeling balanced again. I feel that when I was just on premarin I had more anxiety and just not feeling like myself. How long have you been taking the p capsules at night? I've been taking it for 3 nights and I find it's helping. Also, when ever you decide to stop the hormones do you have to wean yourself off?

Hello and thank you for this information. My Dr has put me on the Mirena to slow down well it stopped my period. I do have endometriosis and a small fibroid. I really do not want to be on the Mirena. Do you have any thoughts?

I recently started progestin form of birth control and I love it so far. My mood is great and I have energy plus I’m sleeping well. I think I even lost a little weight which I wasn’t concerned about since I’m already thin “but I know this is “synthetic” so I’ll have to see how this goes

Hi. I value your video. My Gynocoligist wants to put in a Merina IUD because I’m
57 years old. Had Hysterscopy last year for a thick hyperplasia uterine lining and bleeding. Removed a cyst. She did a D&C and removed a cyst. Now a year later I’m bleeding again and gave a thick lining again. Now she wants to repeat the procedure but add a Merina IUD to release progesterone. I’m scared. I have an autoimmune disease. I’m
Morbidly obese. Very sensitive to medications. Is there anything else I can do besides having the IUD and losing weight? She said the progesterone pills would cause mood swings And agitation. Thank you. Please help.

Hi! My doctor prescribed 50mg of progesterone from a compounding pharmacy. Is? Dosage to high to begin with? I’m age 40 almost 41 and just had a baby 8 months ago. I’m having sleep issues, foggy brain and some memory issues

Thank you so much for this video. I’m a bit confused. My Gynocoligist just told me progesterone tablets can cause mood swings and agitation but you said it is calming. Last year around this time I had a Hysterscopy. She removed a cyst. Did a D&C and all because I’m 57 and obese and had uterine hyperplasia. Thickened lining. Now bleeding again. Thickened lining again. Now she wants to input a Merina IUD. I have an autoimmune disease. I’m extremely sensitive to medications. Besides taking allowing her to input the IUD what are my other options? My lining is 22 on one side. 23 on the other. I’m just getting a check in my spirit about allowing her to input the IUD to thin the uterine lining with slow low dose releasing progestin. Please help. I need more options. Thank you.

She may be talking about synthetic progestins (and that is what is in Mirena). ProgesterONE is calming and helps with sleep, bone health, brain health and moods.

@@FemmiGirlz I would tell her you've done some research and would like to try progesterone for 6 months. If you are sensitive to meds, you'd likely want to increase slowly. A compounding pharmacy can make any strength you need. Weight loss may also help as fat cells make their own estrogen...making the high estrogen problems worse. Also, aim for 30 grams of fiber in your diet. You may want to consider a DUTCH test to look at the metabolic pathways your body uses to get rid of estrogen and make sure those are in good shape. I can help you with this if you are interested: www.drannagarrett.com/connect-the-dots.

The question I am searching the internet for is do the Progestins actually work against a pregnancy implantation? Is the naturally occurring progesterone affect of maintaining a pregnancy not seen in progestins, but actually progestins do the opposite and work to prevent implantation? "Science" seems to prove it both ways. On one hand, esp the Pro-life "science" articles say, if ovulation happens even with taking a progestin-contraceptive (Mirena, OTCs or Plan B), then the uterus is incapable of implantation. On the other, something like 8 out of a 1000 women will become pregnant with Mirena, or after taking Plan B, so clearly ovulation and implantation can occur, suggesting (what I've always been told) that the method of contraceptives with progestins is to prevent ovulation and if that method fails, implantation will likely be unaffected. I know your video is mostly towards menopause, but you seem knowledgeable and hoping I could pick your brain.

I have been taking medroxyprogesterone 10mg for two months. I just take it 12 days each month to help regulate my period and help with perimenapause symptoms. Is this truly progesterone? I definitely feel like it has helped and I'd like to take it daily but this is what my dr has prescribed. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks in advance

    • @hormoneharmony

Hi there! It is synthetic and is also the drug that was implicated in higher breast cancer risk in the 2002 WHI study. I am not a fan. Perhaps your doctor would consider prescribing progesterone (brand name is Prometrium) for you instead.
