    I love these, I have the 35. It wear really small and I quite like the idea of owning a quality quartz movement watch.

    I have this exact Tuna and can say it is an impressive watch - the quartz makes it unique especially if you look at the horological significance and history behind this specific quartz movement for the tuna.

  • @Lee_K_5555

    The Tuna series is really the essence of Seiko. A no-compromise divers watch, purpose-built quartz movement (at the request of Japanese saturation divers, who prefer quartz to automatics), and unique looks that in no way emulates the Fifty Fathoms/Submariner/Seamaster design ethos seen in hundreds of other divers, and that whacky-cool kanji date wheel. Of course, none of us a professional saturation divers so we dig them because they are a watch geek’s watch: cool for their own sake and way too expensive to appeal to the average man on the street looking for a dive watch. I have a black bezel 031 and between it and the Sumo, consider my dive watch collection complete.

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I will need to learn the kanji characters for the wheel and set it to that

    I love my SBBN033. I had on similar configuration on StrapCode endmill bracelet, yes? Lol. I was also influenced by Jeff McMahon.
    The lume is awesome and simply the best I've ever had in a watch. It is so reactive, strong and enduring, through moderate use you will often have enough charge to always keep the time visible on the watch. Any time of day the dial and hands are always visible if not for the high contrast, then the lume takes over when it starts to get dark and it really lasts. So much so it almost negates any advantage tritium tubes might have since the Seiko lume is just as capable and ready to go.
    The quartz movement is solid and ticks perfectly on each mark. And, it is the only quartz specifically designed and used in tuna models.
    Those hesitant, Dont let the near 48mm round case size fool you. Like many watches, seiko has a special way to design seamingly larger watches to wear and look smaller and always comfortable.
    I also did a side by side comparison to a SRP and it is visually amazing how the tuna looks smaller than the turtle right next to each other. It's like being at the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz California.
    Sadly, I had to sell my sbbn033. I do still miss it from time to time. But, I have a pretty cool replacements in the works in the form of a skx mod. It will be more compact and personalized, but should exhibit much of the design DNA that makes the tuna so cool. Can't wait to finish this project watch.

      @Michael-4 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, that McMahon guy, he's the one. I had little interest in tunas until I started watching his videos. I agree. People who are in two minds regarding the size should just pull the trigger. The other option of course is the ninja black version which I think looks even smaller on the wrist as it doesn't just look like a big chunk of metal.

    • @khronokraze
      @khronokraze 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Orme I'm inclined to respectfully disagree. The black version could look smaller cause the color black tends to recede visually.
      However. The reason I argue the SBBN033, or any watch with a dive bezel that is stainless steel versus black or some other color, actually visually looks smaller is just because there is more metal and the dial, often black or other dark color, is only as large as the crystal.
      Thus, a lot of a watch's wrist presence and perceived visual size is reduced because the dial appears smaller and thus the watch does as well. If the bezel was black, the dial would appear to extend more to include the bezel because it is black like the dial.
      Look at the side by side comparison Bruce did next to the the Turtle and Samurai which are both physically smaller, but because the bezel is also colored, the watch "face" appears larger as a whole and thus looks kind of bigger than the SBBN033.
      Adam, from Properly Wound, also did a video on the SBBN033 and mentioned he had the SBBN031, thought it looked kind of big, decided to get and try the all black SBBN035 and still felt it wore big, then finally got a SBBN033 and felt it looked right and smaller between the 3 he had.
      To each their own interpretation, but that's also how I see it.. Much of the visual perception of size of a watch is determined by how much dial is visible in relationship to the watch case, and consequently a matching (or similarly dark colored) bezel to the dial can make a watch visually appear and wear larger on the wrist, as well. Thus, I generally prefer stainless steel or case matching bezels rather to bezel matching to dial.. At least with watches that are on the larger scale.

    I have the same watch and one of the reasons I purchased was because it is a Quartz. It's nice to have a watch that you don't have to wind and set every time you put it on. I've been thinking about the Strapcode, but the stock rubber is really very comfortable and I think it brings down the bulk a bit. Great vid as always!

    Beautiful watch Bruce! As you said this is not your typical quartz movement. It is made of metal instead of the usual quartz movement and it is made to be serviceable instead of being disposed. And the seriousness of the robust case is not just for show. Google "Seiko Tuna depth test" to see a video of what these watches are capable of.

    Thanks for putting together this informative review on the iconic Tuna that has been on my list of sports watches to acquire but not quite ready to pull the trigger due to its intimidating case size of 48 mm! Instead of the Tuna, I recently picked up a Marathon GSAR automatic which was on sale in Amazon. It is a chunky watch but with a L2L of only 48 mm just like the Tuna, but it wears well on my skinny 6-1/4" wrist with no issues. After viewing this video, I am now a little more confident that the Tuna will fit me as well.

    I love tuna! But I still prefer the older version compare to this (SBBN017) due to its metal hand set that looks more "solid and expensive", silver datewheel (oh man you gotta look in very close to appreciate that silver metallic datewheel and how the date is printed as glossy on top of it), and lastly for the applied SEIKO, which the "O" there is more ellipse rather than round like the newer gen. Cheers!

    My 'crop circles' SBBN007 is my beater watch. Even on my 6.5" wrist it feels great but I do like mine on an isofrane rubber strap which keeps it firmly planted in one position all day. (Hate the feel of a loose watch moving about)

      I also have the sbbn007, for me the 033 misses the mark with the monster hands, marinemaster dial, smaller indices, prospex crown, less domed crystal and gaudy polished shroud, it's just unnecessary garnish that for me dilutes the perfect formula.

    • @tunokies
      @tunokies 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is what's been holding me back from the new version. As you know the (I think, Promethium) lume on our 007's have diminished in 20+ years. I think I could live with the hour hands but would want to change the polished shroud for a brushed one to better match the bezel and keep it more tooly. I bet the crown is a straight swap if you can find an older model one to replace the prospex one.

    I’m fine with the quartz because if we are honest with ourselves it really is the best choice for such an unabashed TOOL watch, but why not go the extra step and put a radio module in there (no doubt it would fit in that beast). That would allow them to nix the crown altogether, as long as it’s a good module and well programmed I wouldn’t miss the ability to set it manually. They could really go nuts with the depth with a monolithic without the need for a crown hole.

    Tuna is the best quartz diver I got the 031 and 7549 but it does not hit the markers but still a good watch though

    I have one, I put it on an MN strap and I have to force myself to rotate my watches. I miss it when I am not wearing it.

      The service situation on that watch kinda kills it for me. Most watchmakers wouldn't be able to service the MM300.

      Spencer Klein from U.S will service any Seiko ; plus if u sent the watch to Seiko ; they will take care of everything.

    This is truly a watch which epitomizes the phrase acquired taste. You start off hating it's quirky form and little by little inevitably you're drawn towards it and forced to plonk down the cash.
    MM 300 still the big Daddy though.

    Tuna?....More like Humpback Whale! Think I’ve seen thinner clocks. Beautifully made though. Agree that it does look a lot smaller on the wrist and that lume is amazing!

    Also Tunas are known for their insane lumes. HOwever the SBBN031/033 is not the brightest since it's not as new as some of the newer tunas such as the SBBN037/SDBX014/SBDX016/SBBN025 and even the Spring drive ones. If I rmb correctly, these newer Tunas are able to top the lume brightness and longevity yet again. Then again, this is one of the best looking tunas cus its so unique

    7c46 in the MM1000 can withstand 2.04 miles under the ocean before he quits.
    The 8L35 version can take 2.67 miles under the ocean.
    Lovin my SBBN023 cuz I'm a Golgo fanboy, but it lacks Prospex and the X,also lacks stepped dial.
    But I AM Golgo 13 when I wear it.
    Looking for a used Tuna,but even beaten to snot they still go for 700us or more.
