As a boy in the 60s I worked on a market stall which sold cloth. Started at 7 o'clock to set up. In winter the council provided presurised parafin lamps, I stillremember the hiss and the smell. In those days Stockton market was the biggest twice weekly market in England and I believe it still is the widest central high street in the U.K.
I watch another youtube who speaks of the history of the highstreet pretty often and had mentioned the lamps and later electrical hookups the council provided the market sellers. The market is getting smaller than i remember. However it still has a good enough selection for us to make use of it. Your right too, the town still holds its record i believe. 👍
Awful empty town the spirit ripped out of it by the planners. Shouldn't have built the retail shopping centre near and encouraged all stores to the main street with attractive rates and rentals. Real shame...
