You are so right, It is a good time of the year, Frank. My wife and I have been together for 44 years and married for 42 years as of this past December 3rd. You know, I can’t think of a particular present that sticks out in my memory. There has certainly been a lot of good ones. For many years now it has been gift cards for me and lottery scratchers for her. For the past several years it has been all about the grandkid. And we have a lot. I retired 4 years ago. So we save our money and go on expensive trips that we couldn’t afford when we were younger. Marking things off on our bucket list. The time we spend together is the most important to me. Especially, in our later years. We have lost a lot of family and friends over the years. Tomorrow is promised to no one. Thanks Frank. Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! Happy Hanukkah!
Awesome stuff Frank!! Fantastic memories. Super cool old kits and diecasts. My parents used to get me Franklin mint every once in a while too. So nice. Thanks for sharing the great memories. No better hobby. No better time of the year.
After picking up the hobby around 40 years ago (I’m old…) my grandmother was the one that bought me a new kit every time I finished one. Those trips to the modelling shops are nice memories that keep coming up to this day. Thanks Frank!
The last Christmas,I had with my wife before she passed. She bought me a 68Vw beetle.Because she knew how much I loved Beetles.I told her that this was not just a snap together kit it would take some time. That being said over the years for whatever reason I had acquired some kits , so I started to try and build the kits I had, working towards building the VW.Well I’m getting better with every build, the models say 12yrs + I’m at about 14. That model means a lot and I don’t want to screw it up,So videos like yours help a lot, but just talking about gifting models sparked a response. Thanks
Happy Holidays Frank. Touching video and I'm glad you found your keeper. My parents were James and Jane, HS sweethearts and together to the day my dad died. My dad started me on model planes (my bedroom ceiling was covered with them) and later I moved to cars. I recently have tried getting back to it and I have built a ok equipped shop. Homemade paint booth from a storage bin and vent fan, silent air brush compressor adding a refrigerator compressor to an air tank, and a couple of air brushes. Watching you and others here on TH-cam has helped make me better already. For my first model in decades I decided to do an 85 FE3 Olds but done up to recall an 84 Cutlass I used to own. I've added styrene along the bottom to represent the aluminum trim those cars had. It's going slow but well. My bravery at trying that for my first build in so long comes directly from watching you. Thank you.
I grew up in NYC in the 60’s and 70’s and I remember my first model my pops bought for me when I was with him at Delancey street there was a small store and the owner only had a stack of of one kit. Johan 1968 Cadillac coupe for 50 cents. Unfortunately I was one of four brothers and that model disappeared after I built it. My older brother always stole my cars. He won’t admit now but I’m sure it was him. Like you I was into cars and planes. The last kit I bought in the city before I moved in 1979 is a AMT 1976 Camaro Rally Sport. I still have it today. Like you after college I met my wife. She has always supported my hobby. Real and models. I’m turning 65 this month and she still asks what do I want. Unfortunately my wife is disabled because of Cancer treatments (it messed with her balance). She will just say go buy it from me to you. We are both very lucky men.
You are blessed my friend. Going on 23 years with mine. She is definitely my biggest supporter. I had alot of model themed Christmases and birthdays like you did, I think this one will be like that lol. Those are some sweet vintage kits!
Thanks for the flood of memories this morning. My parents knew I loved anything designed by Tom Daniels. My bedroom had more than 60 complete builds that started when I was 8 and until life became busy at 16. My collection slowly died from moves until I gave the remaining 10 models to a young child of friends of my parents. They had very little and I knew that one day I would build these kits again, but only better. I've collected about a third of those old kits and I'm always on the hunt for the ones I'm missing. Glad you brought me along for the ride down memory lane. 🙂
Very cool memories Frank! That is awesome that your wife not only supports you in the hobby but hunts down kits and items to support you! I mostly received hobby related items from my folks and now my kids but I always remember an old Indy Miller car kit I received from my grandparents and the old Lincoln Hot Rod from Revell I received from my Aunt and uncle. Still have the kits set aside 😊
Frank, you put a smile on my face in every video. 🙂 This episode covers two points that apply to me. First my oldest Son gifted me a couple models recently, reintroducing me to the hobby after a long, LONG absence. I built a 1/1000 scale starship Enterprise out of the box and it reminded me how much I like modeling. Secondly, content like yours inspires me to continue while providing knowledge to improve the skills. This is a cool community. You are one of the gems. Thanks for your videos, for sharing your knowledge and for the smiles! Merry Christmas to you and yours!
I still have all of my Franklin Mint "Cars of The 50's" die casts. STill have the display that came with the set. Somewhere, I still have a Franklin Mint 1950 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz. I've been trying to find a large enough case for it so I can display it. When I was a kid, my parents would always get me model trains for Christmas (trains are my first love). My daughter has given me a couple of model kits over the year.
Hey Frank, my aunt and uncle gave me a visible V8 when I was 11 or 12, needless to say, it got "put together",but it didn't run. Kids, huh? Keep up the great work Frank.
Agreed with what you said Frank. I owe my wife a lot when it comes to this hobby. I also was bought Franklin mint cars over the years by my Parents then my boys came along that's just say they learned how to drive dodgems cars very quickly lol Merry Christmas to you and yours 👍👍
i did the pontiac when it was new just sprayed it silver. last year got it out and used the molotow liquid chrome marker, looks a lot better now. wish i had the t bird to go with it
As a kid, I remember getting a '58 T-bird as a Christmas gift from an aunt&uncle, think it was by Revell. I still have the built model somewhere, but not the box. It was molded in black, and could be built factory stock (like I did it) or as a custom (different roof, etc). The hobby needs more kids in it today. At model shows, the "youth" class table doesn't get enough entries, imo. I have a lot of FM and DM 1:24 diecast, Frank. Some have appreciated, but unfortunately most have fallen from those $100 initial prices to $40-$80 today, even if in good condition. So many collections are sold in estate sales, for one lump sum. Many of these show up at model builder and toy shows/swap meets today. eBay isn't a good place to get a value, since people even walk right past the vendors at the shows who will be happy to liquidate models for $60.
So at this point I now wonder if our wives are related. Giving me crap for a "wardrobe change" sounds exactly like something she'd do, and while watching this she bit me on the face 🤣. Another fantastic and insightful video. A long time ago there was a community question of how did you get into the hobby? I did a video explaining that I came back as "a cheap thing I could put on my Christmas list" (So much for cheap). Over the years I've received several models and related gear like tools, and Hobby zone workshop sets.
Model kits actually ruined Santa Claus for me. When I was 9-10 years old I was in our basement getting something out of the deep freezer for my mom. Beside it was a little enclosure that encased our water meter, glancing down inside it I saw several model kits I had asked Santa Claus for... Needless to say when they showed up mixed between "Santa" and my parents the illusion was finally fully shattered. My parents got models for me throughout my childhood for Christmas up to the point that chores, mowing the lawn, etc made enough cash to buy models on the regular myself.
“Santa” put the 1/8 scale 1982 Corvette under three! I have a picture of me holding it proudly. 😊 The first kit that was gifted for my birthday was a lime green custom Pinto. Still have it. What hobby shop had the original issue Little Coffin? Freeport?
@@dominickgerace9662 Hurricane Hobbies when they were on Middle Country Rd close to where the Ford dealership was, and before they moved closer to N Ocean. Dave in Freeport probably would have wanted $17k for it!
