- It's family week on WML: Arlene and Dorothy are joined by their respective husbands on the panel! Martin Gable was of course a frequent panelist, but not Richard Kollmar, who costarred with Dorothy on a morning chat show called "Breakfast with Dorothy and Dick".

Tab Hunter was the classic good-looking "boy next door." I saw the documentary about Tab, he was extremely genuine, sincere, and down-to-earth.

What's My Line? -- I guess I was the only one who saw his homophobic jibe against Tab Hunter, which is something I won't tolerate since I'm gay myself. Now I can't see his comments because I blocked him, so he can post to his heart's content and it won't do him any good. Nice to know I was the only one who saw his remark.
ToddSF 94109 I've said it before many times-- the integration with Google+ was a complete disaster, this being just one example of how broken the system is as a result. I have almost no control whatsoever over comments on Google+, so this kind of thing happens ALL THE TIME. People like you, welcome members of the commenting community, see these awful, awful messages from people I've already banned from commenting ages ago. And you have no way of knowing it, unless you go to the TH-cam page and look at the comments there and check whether they're visible (and who's going to do that? Why should anyone have to do that?)

I'm sorry to say, Mr. Cortez, people not affected by the segregationist years, such as my generation (X) and the preceding generation (Boomers), tend to not think in such terms. I just don't know why some pine for the '50s as better times. They tend to forget the hedonism of the early 20th century, until it was suppressed into utter conformity by the '50s, but the seething anger and pent up frustrations roiling just 'neath the surface was soon to blow.

Tab Hunter's autobiography was a very interesting and fun read. He was a very handsome man and a fine actor, without question! His recollections were often quite funny and fascinating - including his experience (on the Broadway stage) with Tallulah Bankhead. Now THAT story was worth the entire price of the book! RIP dear Sir!

Just in case anyone is interested Tab is still with us. He's 85,looks gorgeous, spends his time working with horses. Hes been with his partner for about 30 years and seems to be really happy.

I was at a screening of his documentary about 3 years ago in LA. He was very down to earth, kind, and probably the most handsome and sexy 80+ year old man I have ever seen. Wow
I was born in the ‘70s and never heard of Tab Hunter until this episode. Now, like after so many episodes, I head to Wikipedia and some internet searching to learn about yet another wonderful bygone life.

In 1958, Tab Hunter would star in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical play "Damn Yankees". Actually, that was a darn good film version of the musical. Gwen Verdon and Ray Walston reprised their Broadway roles, respectively, as Lola the seductress and the Devil. If you're a fan of Broadway musicals and you haven't seen the film version of "Damn Yankees", I recommend it highly.
IMO Tab was great in the film adaptation, adding a charming naturalistic element to counter the more theatrical aspects surrounding him.

I adore Tab. People seem to be making a deal about his bemused look and hesitation at the "Do you especially appeal to women?" line. He couldn't answer that himself as he would have came across as swell-headed, hence him looking to John for help.

It would've been terrible for him to say, "Why yes, I appeal to women, and I look WONDERFUL in a torn shirt!" He was simply being appropriately modest about his matinee-idol appeal. I don't think he was being peek-a-boo-ish about his sexuality at all.

Tab had a long relationship with Allan Glaser. Over 30 years. They got married when it was legal to do so and Tab died three days shy of his 87th birthday in Calif.

According to Hunter's autobiography this "secretary" later blackmailed him with the cards and love letters he wrote to him. I think Tab really worked with horses there.

There is no reason why the farm manager, a simple gritty man, would invent a tale saying that Tab Hunter, a then forgotten ex-celebrity, was living in the "big house". That is my basis for belief in what he said. My own observation goes no farther than that.

My grandma used chewing tobacco. She would visit us when I was a child. It was Apple tobacco and she dipped snuff they called it. She was from North Carolina. She actually lived till 96 years old in spite of it but she lived on a farm for a long time. Maybe the fresh air and fresh produce helped. Also less stress than city life. This was a while back since I'm 65 and she visited us back in the 1960's.
As usual, there were laughs and funny lines on this episode. But without Bennett Cerf, this may be one of the rare episodes during which there were no puns, and especially no bad puns.

Tab Hunter is so funny here! A German-American man who could be described as pretty more than handsome in my opinion. When he shakes hands with the panel, look how Dick Kollmar cannot take his eyes off of Tab. That's a sure give away.

This brings up a question I have had, do these dresses belong to the women, or are they provided by the show?? Admittedly, they make enough to be able to afford a new dress for each show, yet many shows, then and now, would provide the wardrobe.
The panelists provided their own wardrobe. they often were in evening clothing as sunday was the lights out night in the theater and they had been out on their night off .
And I have noticed a few times that the gals have worn the same dress on different episodes.

thebluerobin Very few people knew that. Why did Warner Brothers executives spend a lot of time doing damage control to quash possible rumors about Tab Hunter’s offscreen life? They would not have devoted so much time and energy to such a thing if a lot of people already had evidence of his intimate relationship with another man.

Well yes he did appeal to women. What would have been ironic would have been the question do women appeal to him. But does it matter who people get into bed with. He was just a lovely being.
This is a crucial episode in production decisions about who would appear as regular or guest panelists on WML. Gabel did not appear on the panel until December 1956. This is February 1957, about two months later. He has appeared just a few times. He is a theatrical producer and actor of stage screen film and radio headquartered in New York, which means he is available to WML. Kollmar is an actor, too, notably in radio, a radio broadcaster and a theatrical producer headquartered in New York and available to WML, too. Gabel went on to appear on WML over 100 times. This appearance is it for Kollmar the panelist. I wonder why. Either he did not like the game show experience or he did not impress the producers. However, before tonight, either Gabel or Kollmar or both could have appeared on WML a 100 times plus from 1957 to 1967.
Dorothy and her Husband Dick were each involved in extramarital affairs at this time in their lives. Neither spent much time with the other and it was known by all on or involved in this show.
Dorothy loved being on this show and perhaps her husband did not as he was quite reckless.
The Kollmar-Kilgallen union was a miserable marriage riven by numerous extramarital affairs on both sides. Richard ended up disowning his son Kerry (allegedly sired by Johnnie Ray) and dying from a suicide-overdose in 1971. No wonder this marked his only appearance on WML.
Always great to hear, and see, one of my favorite radio stars. Dick Kollmar, who played my name sake Boston Blackie (Although I purposely spell the last name differently.)

wow, john daly really looks and sounds ill, probably the reason richard kollmar mentioned he hadn't missed a show in 8 years. i am constantly impressed with daly's gracious and respectful demeanor toward all his guests, he always adds some complimentary comment about them.

I think you're right - Daly's voice sounds as if he's sick, and the reference to his never having missed a show could be a compliment to his being at work even if he'd have been better off home in bed.

Miss Milligan (who later became Mrs. Rasmusen (and appears as such on WML in 1962)) was the head of the WACs until 1962, helped integrate them, and was awarded the Legion of Merit for her troubles.
She became a big ol' philanthropist and activist once she got married, retired, and moved to Alaska. She died in 2012, at 101.

Few ordinary people were on WML? At most only some of the not mystery guests and, respectfully, this episode’s human cannon ball and gum packager were not particularly genteel and mannered. It’s like walking in front of a Porsche dealership and inducing the cars in this town look beautiful. (Having used the adjective “beautiful” in the context of WML, it doesn’t look right without the proper noun “Arlene” in close proximity. She was a beauty!)

Richard Kollmar's only other panel appearance was in 1952 on a program that is unfortunately among the "lost" episodes of WML.
This had to be awkward for both Dorothy and Richard as their marriage was basically in name only. I won’t name specifics.

Elisa Ruiz - I really cannot say and I've seen them all. I think both Steve & Eydie were on the panel at the same time, but I don't think Martin had the 4th seat that night. My guess would be the most likely candidates for a double date panel, if it occurred, would have been Arlene, Martin, Steve Allen & Jayne Meadows. Though, having said that, both Phyllis & Bennett Cerf were on the panel one night and I don't recall who else was on. Also I think there was a time when Peter Lind Hayes and Mary Healy may have been on the panel together, but I do not know with whom else they served that night. There's also a chance that Ernie Kovacs & Edie Adams were on the panel together, but again I don't recall the other panelists, if they were. I'm now going to have to look into this. It is becoming an obsession, like the time the show sent us all to the encyclopedia to find out what the heck worms really are. Thanks a lot!
Tab Hunter enjoyed a ‘purple patch’ of stardom from the mid to the late 1950’s. He was a competent actor but not an outstanding one. He appeared in a few good films and had two big chart hits. However, with the arrival of the 1960’s, films changed, as did acting styles and in their wake came along a new breed of actors. Slowly Tab’s career went into slow decline. Hollywood can be very unforgiving. He led an umblemished personal life and as far as I know was a credit to the acting profession.
The reason why he wasn't an "outstanding" actor is because the studio system in those days kept typecasting him into similar boy-next-door film roles; thus, he wasn't given much of a chance to play more diverse complex characters within the studio. The same can be said for many actors of his time, as the system back then was very messed up.
Tab Hunter had also given some excellent performances in television dramas, in anthology series' such as "Playhouse 90," from where such projects were often developed for big-screen features. One such TV drama was "Fear Strikes Out," an episode of the "Climax!" anthology series, wherein Hunter portrayed Boston Red Sox center fielder Jimmy Piersall, an athlete who had a mental illness and on whose memoir the drama (and later feature film) was based.
Hunter originated that role of BoSox fielder Jim Piersall for the TV drama. Yet when it was made into a motion picture by Paramount the starring role as Piersall was given to Anthony Perkins, ironic as Perkins had been Hunter's boyfriend at the time and used information he learned from Hunter to nab the part for himself. This violation of personal trust resulted in the breakup of the two actors. But if one watches the two portrayals of Piersall for comparison it is clear Hunter's is the more convincing portrayal as an athlete, whereas Perkins comes off too fey to have portrayed a ball player. In reality, Hunter had been athletic, was a champion horseman as well ice skater and swimmer. But it is, perhaps, the assessment of Perkins by Piersall himself which said it best--""He threw a baseball like a girl and danced around in the outfield like a ballerina," Piersall said. It is too bad Warner Bros. didn't loan out Hunter to Paramount so Hunter could have more convincingly played Jimmy Piersall on the big screen as well.
Tab Hunter also delivered a chilling portrayal of a psychotic killer in the "Playhouse 90" drama "Portrait of a Murderer," co-starring Geraldine Page. That production was directed by Arthur Penn, who would go on to direct the Academy Award-nominated films "The Miracle Worker (1962) and "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967). So by 1958 Hunter had the experience of having acted in two dramas in which he portrayed characters with serious mental illnesses. And yet it was Tony Perkins who landed the role of "Norman Bates" in Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" in 1960. So obviously, the only justice in Hollywood is on the screen.
Hunter also starred in the Cold War drama "Forbidden Area," the teleplay adapted from the novel by Rod Serling for "Playhouse 90." So Hunter did have some real potential as a serious actor before his acting career wound down and he enjoyed a brief resurgence in the 1980s. And, yes, Tab Hunter certainly was a credit to not only the acting profession but to decent and kind persons as well. And to paraphrase an old cinematic interrogative, the answer to "Did Success Spoil Tab Hunter?" would certainly be an emphatic "No!." It is too bad there are not more actors like Tab Hunter around today.

Tab Hunter retired and moved in with a rich elederly woman in The Plains Virginia. Her farm was at the foot of a mountain. A jumbo jet from Dulles Airport crashed into that mountain. I dated the daughter of the manager of that farm.
