I think everyone is failing to consider a major aspect. For us chess fans Freestyle chess is more exciting, but notice how we all got interested in the game with its normal setup- watching these big talents and envisioning ourselves at the classic chess board with tons of history. A chess variant with random order of pieces would be terrible to advance the game. FIDE is completely right to be concerned that such a big number of players would skew the focus away from actual chess that attracted us all. You can’t just change millions of years of history just for a few chess fans. Every time I see a boost in chess viewership, it comes crashing down with decisions like freestyle chess. This is why chess will never be regarded as possible and not many will get to enjoy the beautiful game. Say what you want; I said what I said.

Suddenly you have no top level events, and those are the events that bring in the money for the organiser. This reminds me of what's going on in Pro Pool/Billiards...except it got deeper and is currently still in a crappy place....this is between WPA who has been the governing body for pool for a long time and Matchroom Pool that has organized the first Pro Tour in 30 years...and who the players like the most because theyre getting paid much more.
FIDE is crazy. Nothing stopped them from organising their own Chess960 tournaments. Didn't they already do so before? Why did they need to agree to something that there should have been no disagreements about in the first place? If there are other regular chess tournaments that are not organised by FIDE, why did they have a problem with FCPC?
If FIDE tries to prevent players from making chess a true career by limiting the competitions they can enter... They'd Need to be boycotted, no one should "control" the way this thousand yr old game is practiced
Pool is experiencing a similar conflict with the WPA threatening to suspend all of the top players for participating in the Matchroom World Nineball Tour. WPA is an old organization that once did some good for the sport by publishing a "standardized" rule book and sanctioning events. They then appointed themselves the keepers of the game. And then a new organization Matchroom with commercial aspirations came along, began to succeed financially and was lucrative for the players, and thus a threat to the older body. I honestly don't follow it because it's silly and petty so I don't know where it stands today, just that it is (or was) an embarrassment to the sport.

FIDE, whether we like it or not, is undeniably the governing body of chess. In my view, a better approach would be to try to change things from within FIDE, although I am sure that the reply I'll be given to this is that they have already gone down that route to no avail.

Most sportspersons do not make money from their sport. While chess is very popular online, it is NOT a spectator sport. Hikaru and rest of chess players want to be paid as elite athletes competing in popular sports, but how many tickets will any chess event sell? A soccer player sells merchandise, gets people into stadiums, sell TV packages, and attracts sponsorships.. and hence justify their massive pay. A chess player, including Magnus) can at best draw some small sponsor or get revenue from streaming. Otherwise they rely on generosity of governments or wealthy individuals with passion for the sport. Handball , Volleyball, Field Hockey players do not make fortunes, despite winning Olympic medals. Realisation has to dawn at some point that Chess is not and very very unlikely to be money making for even the top players. Yes, Indian players are being rewarded handsomely right now. That is because India has such a dearth of sporting success. As more people become successful in sport, there will be less rewards being distributed. There is nothing wrong in chess players having a regular career and paying the game part-time.
Why? It's just a rebrand to help reinvigorate the format and generate excitement with people not as familiar with the chess world. If it helps expand the genre, that's a net positive imo

Why is that a problem? It's a very common thing in most sports.
Anyone above 2725 classical rating is invited to the club. So, it is merit based.
