From what I know, light is an electromagnetic wave, so if Tesla had control over electromagnetism he would be able to make us go blind by red-shifting or blue-shifting the visible light that reaches us to light we can’t see. He would also be able to turn any light into deadly radiation just by increasing the frequency of the light. I think I need a tin foil hat, and a radiation resistant suit as well..

From what I know, only a few designs are "illegal." Some can be questionable (Or even valid as a non-cannon proto), but there's a lot of pure, untapped potential that people just don't capitalize on...
As for people not caring about the rules anymore, yeah. Most of the people that pretend they do seem to do so in a way that makes the species seem more restrictive than it is. You can slap on SOOOOOOOOO many accessories, but people seem to forget that you can attach extra things onto protogen... like a life jacket or hydro-jets for sea exploration.
Have to say thank you, you gave me a very much needed boost to my mood today when I've been having a really rough week. My main 'sona is a protogen and I use him to represent my industrious and silly side and I thank you.

I was so entralled with the Species once I discovered them via Jting.
I was interested in Furry, but never got a Character until just recently.
But I realized I needed a Protogen character because I am very interested in Engineering. I'm almost done with my Bachelor's in CS. And I REALLY wanna finish my degree in Mechanical. I originally wanted to get degree in Double E, but we'll see. Double E be magic.

A protogen that i like is B6A, a model used in military, industrial, and private businesses. A human sided or non human sided, it is a great model that I like. Oh also B6A can apply 50 tons of force when at full power.

I had a Protogen but I'm a Wild cat and fox hybrid now. I might add some robotic parts to my fursona like an arm or leg or foot just to remember when I was a Protogen.
A few months ago I joined an Amino dedicated to this wonderful furry species. In fact, it is that same Amino where I met nearly all my current furry friends. I’ve since left that Amino as it... well, it sucks now... But I am now one of the three admins of a cozy little proto server on Discord. So yeah, Protogen are very near and dear to my heart. My main fursona is Lyca the protogen. My god I love her.

I have a proto as well! But they are making a pretty big overhaul of the species' story and background and I'm pretty sure Database will be shot down because of her powers :/
I mean, if that happens I'll just turn her into a Synth (which is another amazing robotic species and this one is very lenient on how you make yours -- it can even be more fluffy than a proto!), so it's not like I'm that worried about it.

About your point about the robotic aspects distancing it from the fandom in a way that's appealing to normies: I can attest to this being true based on my experiences. While my fursona might not be a protogen, he's very much a robot character. (He's a bit of a mixed bag/crystallization of ideas I had over months of considering what traits I wanted to represent with the character. He basically boils down to a robot dragonfly) I'm on discord quite often, and I've used the fact that my fursona is my profile pic on there to my advantage. I've managed to make friends with anti-furs and change their minds about the fandom because they didn't even realize I was a furry. Once I had changed their minds, many of them commented that they had perceived him as a cool robot, not a fursona. That misconception has been a blessing and a curse, but mostly a blessing
