This has been one of my favorite records for about 30 years and not a single person I know has ever heard of it or the band. I have it on a very old single I bought years ago and never heard anything else by this band or anything of them since. This song needs to be rediscovered by someone with influence.
Were support along with the Cure the night in Aberdeen when Siouxsie and the Banshees split up.Two great bands and then you're money back on the way out.1979 50p a pint those were the days.
When you look at the utter shit that passes for music these days and has done for the past 15 years it makes me glad I was around in 77-80 when people cared about music, an incredible tune from a time stuffed with incredible tunes!
How have I never heard this band? I've been thoroughly over the post-punk and early british punk scene with a fine tooth comb for about 20 years and never heard these guys. Amazing. Just bought Author! Author! on Amazon.
The greatest Post-Punk band EVER! With the additional bonus of being from Edinburgh! It's not often you wish you were ten years older but this is definitely the case here. Would've loved to see Scars in their heyday. Come on lads. Unleash the unreleased and do another reunion tour on the back of it.
Hey, I forgot how awesome this song is. For some reason I've been thinking about Scottish punk recently and this song popped into me head. My introduction to Scottish punk blasted me to bits with the Rezillos' 7" I Can't Stand My Baby (7/77) a song that hasn't lost an ounce of shattering power in over 37 years. Of course, everyone knows the Exploited, probably Scotland's most famous punk band. But the Scars are not well known here in America. Adult/ery was first issued as a single in 1979 and later the same year it was included on a compilation album that included Gang Of Four and the Mekons. So I now direst your punk ears to this tremendous song. And then we'll hear a live version! Sweet, eh?
this was one of my favorites off the "Fasti Product Mutant Pop" compilation. Raw and oddly uplifting. Too bad they only managed an album several years later, with some of the edge gone.
Are you seriously back together and touring again!!!!! wow, I have waited sooooooooo long for this..... ps dont really want to see HL (again) but will come because of THE SCARS :)
We came together for an Edinburgh gig at the picture house in 2010, followed by a live session for Marc Riley on BBC6 Music .... but then we parted company again.
SECOND SCOTTISH BAND WE'RE HEARING TODAY. Formed in Edinburgh in the late 1970's Scars were fronted by Robert King and included Paul Research guitar, John Mackie on bass, and Calumn Mackay on drums The band's original sound was harsh and angular as evidenced on the tremendous song Adult/ery. Most of us here in America first heard Adult/ery when it was included on a compilation that featured Gang Of Four and the Mekons.
25MelKay Hey mate, thanks so much for commenting. You should be very proud of your dad. I commented on two of their other songs on my channel. If you click on my name it should take you to my channel. Best to you and your dad!
25MelKay Thanks so much. I would like to comment on them on my channel. Do you happen to know where and what year they were recorded? They are both excellent. And also what is your first name? So I can credit you.
I'm Melanie :) My Dad reckons they were recorded in 1978, possibly in Mike's Studio (not too sure about that) in Edinburgh. Paul Mackie would know for sure. Cheers!
This was my intro to Scars a few years ago right here (jaw dropped, mad that I had missed this band, but with the obscurity of their releases before the Author Author CD, it made it hard to run across them in a record shop, 1/4 century later). Since, I've tracked down the Author Author CD re-release and finally had a slightly battered, but good Adult-ery 7" on Fast. What a single. The guitar mix is like 10x for abrasive on the vinyl. Horrorshow great enough to be another A side.
Very interesting seeing that tour poster with the Human League. I them both together but at the Poly not the Locarno in Portsmouth. Different tour or change of venue?
scoorieboy Yes. You fired me. I deserved it. I was a tad hurt though when, in 2010-ish Paul said you could not work with me because I was 'unreliable'. I wrote 'heroin' on my Facebook page not in any glamourous way, but it had a private context that made its point to the child. All you said 'no'. But I had said 'no' before, because Paul tried to restrict my input with no-nos regarding lyrical topics. Topics? I only write what the music says... I say ALL this in peace. We are beyond hate. You, and I, are a Scar. XXX
Had a late seventies coimp album of this and some other stuff. Closest thing that reminded me to a ganbang/brundlefly of the clash, 999 and the stranglers all roled into one.
One of my favorite songs/albums of all time. You can get the album this song first appeared on here (delete spaces) My other faves from this album are 2.3. wilfullyobscure.blogspot. com/2009/10/va-fast-product-mutant-pop-7879-1980.html
Edinburgh's finest, my feelings for this single have not changed in 33 years, simply jawdropping.

Brilliant! Pure Genius! They should of been big success! True Scots!

Absolutely superb, as an Edinburgh boy, I can say without doubt these lads were this city's finest.
Cheers....
A tend to Agree at the time🤔👍
i'm 22 and i think this is one of the best singles of the 70s without question
That guitar sound is effing brilliant
Very early Buzzcocks. Good song though.
This song had the finest guitar work of the entire 1970s decade, right at the end
Were support along with the Cure the night in Aberdeen when Siouxsie and the Banshees split up.Two great bands and then you're money back on the way out.1979 50p a pint those were the days.
My big brother brought this back on a rare visit from Uni. One of the few times to this day I have loved the guy.
When you look at the utter shit that passes for music these days and has done for the past 15 years it makes me glad I was around in 77-80 when people cared about music, an incredible tune from a time stuffed with incredible tunes!
I remember staying with my mate Bill Grumpy in Blackpool and playing this 30+ years ago! Brilliant!

What a noise ! What a record ! What a band ! Marvellous.
How have I never heard this band? I've been thoroughly over the post-punk and early british punk scene with a fine tooth comb for about 20 years and never heard these guys. Amazing. Just bought Author! Author! on Amazon.
My favourite single... then and now....
One of the best singles ever made by anybody at any time

The reunion venture did not work out well. I can send you links to the singer's more recent musical works, should you wish.

YES!! I used to have this single!!
Really fab catchy chorus.

The original drummer is my dad :) So glad people are still listening to the Scars!

Thanks I passed it on! My dad gave me a Scars demo tape and I uploaded a couple of unreleased tracks if you're interested :) All the best to you ◈✧◈

can't wait to watch "Big Gold Dream" and learn more about amazing bands like the Scars
Thank you god ..
Unbelievable track.Had the album since '81;never heard this one and the other non album tracks.
I love this single more than in anything in the world, but none of their other records come close. With that it were otherwise, but...
In retrospect I half take that back.

Brilliant
Preston in the snow. Fast Product agents in the sixth forms. jalgos. thistle guitars. 1980. My university!
Der beste Song von den Scars, die Single ist großartig. Danach kam leider nur noch überflüssiges.
Horrorshow?
@cutsville Couldn't agree more. This is a positively venomous sound.
Very Good.Edgy, suspect they were probably fans of the Subway Sect who seem to have a big influence on this generation of Scottish bands.
Love this
Brilliant.
Cheers m8

To be honest I can't remember why. Last minute venue change prob.
I'll pay $1000 US to anyone who can play the guitar line EXACTLY like it sounds here..GREAT FUCKING TRACK!!

All in peace Rab. History.
@stakka79 Apologies for the delayed reply ... John was the engineer, and an excellent one. It was produced by Bob Last and Scars.

Had a late seventies coimp album of this and some other stuff. Closest thing that reminded me to a ganbang/brundlefly of the clash, 999 and the stranglers all roled into one.
Sounds very like the Buzzcocks' first album.

And I ordered my Scars t-shirt from T. I. T. S. t-shirts the day they went bust. That's £5 I'll never get back. What the hell.
I love All about you but this is awful
