As a Trinidadian here glad to see the reaction and your thoughts about what you taught it was about. So to answer some questions. I would say that it is many similar events celebrating our heritage and freedom that come together to create the whole that we call Carnival. Carnival is not just the Monday and Tuesday it is Months of celebration before Ash Wednesday. Before the parade of the bands, we have a lot of events that bring together the whole experience. Such as Calypso Monarch, Chutney Soca Monarch, Soca Monarch, Canboulay riots, Stick Fighting and Panorama just to name a few. Within those events, it have both adult and junior categories which involves children from ages 3 to 18 years old. Kiddies Carnival is the Sunday before Carnival Monday. There are a lot of things for people to enjoy during the Carnival period if they are not playing in a band. We have a little bit for everyone.

We call it Carnival Monday and Tuesday in TnT.. In addition most masqueraders meet their bands fully dressed in their carnival costumes on Carnival Tuesday. In the olden days we would wear par of the costumes on a Carnival Monday afternoon. Now most Carnival bands wear a T shirt and shorts. The African drums were banned yes but it also had to do with the hybrid religon, which was Roman Catholic mixed with African and some Hindu religious tradtions. The first instrument after the ban of African drum was called tamboo bamboo, which is pieces of banboos cut at differnt lenghts. They were hit on the ground, sometime in the 1930's we started with dust bin covers which eventually turned into oil drums. As with anything African it was frowned upon by civil society. However as we became an Independent nation and then a republic state, we Trinibagonias fully accepted the steelpan as ours!

Most carnval bands in Trinidad tell a story. The judges must have a synopsis (a story) in order for the band to get points in "presentation".
    The ponts are based on
    Originality
    Presentation
    Creativity
Spirit Of Carnival (that is dancing)
    Visual Impact

    • costume design isn't what it used to be. There were vibrant costumes that told stories, now it's bikini/draws and beads. No hate, writing facts. Shame is almost out the window, some women come out in body paint only.

so for the carnival season....although the main finale event is Carnival Monday and Tuesday....Keep in mind that the entire carnival period is a month prior. In the month prior there are different celebrations and different shows (including children parades, calypso competition, fetes -meaning parties, stick fighting, jamette carnival, canboulay riot re-enactments, steel pan competitions, etc.) leading up to the finale days of Jouvert Carnival Monday (usually early morning around 3am to 6 am) , and then pretty mas starting the same Carnival Monday but at 6 am, which continues straight onwards to Carnival Tuesday, which ends around 11pm. The Wednesday afterwards is known as Ash Wednesday, given to the country as a National Holiday and which is mostly recognised by the Catholic community (keep in mind also that the % of Catholics is very high amongst those in the nation).

A pretty comprehensive take on Carnival even though the narration is rife with inaccuracies and, in some cases, just plain wrong. From the beginning of Carnival, to the evolution of calypso music, to the genesis of the steel pan, to how and when bands are judged, I feel you would get a better understanding of what you just viewed.
If this was overdubbed with accurate narration you'd have a few, "Aha!" moments.

Also in terms of being able to take part as compared to Rio....anyone can purchase a costume and celebrate mas with a carnival band of their choice(note there are different types of mas bands....the one showcased in this video is more on the traditional side...but there are others that have costumes familiar to those seen in Brazil or Rio). Even some spectators who haven't bought any costumes join bands while on the road and celebrate with bands but at the sidelines. Also... the moko-jumbies aka stilts...when you begin they start you off with a very short stilt so no worries lol, give it a try !

while I understand the Mardi gras reference, it takes away our Trinbagonian heritage as Carnival is not just a day, if you experience it, you will understand why some take offence, there are so many spinoffs of our Carnival in other countries, but nothing compares to TRINBAGO carnival, the narrator, though he did a very good job, clearly is not local and couldn't capture its full essence in this video. We eat, sleep, breathe carnival. It's a Trinbagonian way of life ''like we need blood in we veins, that's how we feel about Port of Spain, ITS CARNAVAL''.
