I would say that the DRK symbol looks like a greatsword with magic coming off of it as originally they were the "magic tank" and they have spells and skills. Specifically it reminds me of the skill Abyssal Drain which has been around in some form since its release.
The DNC one can be a stylized heart (and is not only present on the artifact gear embroidery but also in the Closed Position icon and buffs which give the impression of two hearts dancing as one) BUT it’s also very reminiscent of the ‘eyes’ of peacock feathers, which is visual imagery that is very closely associated with DNC as a class! It’s on the job gauge, most of the artifact gear and also on the stone peacocks decorating that one dancer’s pavilion in Thavnair!
Monk's icon is inspired by their classic claw weapons, so your joke about wolverine is actually exactly on the mark. For Sage's icon, I'm pretty sure the bottom of the 4 shapes is just a laser going pew pew, which is why it's distinctly different from the other 3 portraying the nouliths.
Nope, it's the 4th noulith. The icon was changed before release, it's more noticeable in the old version. My guess is they only left that one hollow so it wouldn't blend in with the other "in front" of it.
@@kou7191 The old version adds some credence that it's still supposed to be a 4th noulith, but the change to the icon is so drastic, and the mismatch in angle and shape between the top 3 and the bottom one so extreme that I simply can't believe they still mean for it to read as 4 of the same object.
The single straight line down the centre of Paladin is also like the sword. With Dark Knight, the spikes are kind of like the hilt of their sword, but also it's reminiscent of one of their spells, the AoE with lifesteal that looks like a spiky ball. Gunbreaker's icon being off balance like it is is also like the barrel of a gun being broken, as in the name and origin in lore. The icon of scholar uses a similar central arc to the summoner imo, since they both arise from aracanist.
I know you joked about summoner doing angle magic, but that's literally the lore behind the arcanist that becomes them. They're doing maths so good it creates magic.
I thought Reaper was the scythe decapitating someone, wrapping around their neck. A grim image for the "lets get demonically possessed" class, grim reaper vibes.
For the monk icon, I interpret it as being arms that are punching. Since FF took its base classes from D&D, it makes sense that monk evokes the D&D monk's flurry of blows ability, but that's just me :)
One thing to note about the sage symbol: it used to have holes in all of the needles, but they changed it due to possible trypophobia concerns. The old one also had everything identical size and pointed straight down. Now one thing I just now noticed about both versions that fits with being a science healer: the center going into the "eye" of the lower one is very much like an injection syringe! Edit: lol, continued watching and interviewee mentioned the trypophobia side.
Dark Knight's job icon leads the eye down, which is fitting for an edgy "no one can save me from the depths of the abyss inside my heart" kind of job. For WHM, roundness is associated with cuteness, softness and sweetness. There are actually studies that have been done on how the shape of food affects our perception of it, and there was this one study in particular that found that desserts with a round shape are perceived as more delicious simply because of the cognitive bias have towards what we think "roundness" means. WHM is portrayed as the stereotypical pure, "angelic" healer, even having an angel form. Although all healers have offensive capabilities, it's clear they want to emphasise how the WHM is, to quote your guest, "the healeriest of healers". Also as a SCH main I've always hated the SCH icon because it's like glasses combined with the stupid mortarboard that forces its way into all the Scholar gear. The only time the mortarboard has looked good was when they let it be a beret. The fairy is WAY more iconic than the glasses or the mortarboard, but I understand if they didn't want people to confuse a fairy icon with an angel one and misunderstand what the SCH is, or potentially confuse its identity with WHM (SCH and WHM are already slightly blurring together with SCH now having an angel-like fairy form like WHM). I feel like SCH's identity trying to be so many different things is something that doesn't work well for it. It's the scholarly class, but also it's the healer pet class, but then also it's the battle tactician that uses... technology (Biolysis, Chain Stratagem, Broil IV)? SCH has elements of all these themes in its design and as more *STUFF* is added it feels like it has been losing its' focus. It doesn't help that around when SGE came out they started added more weird technology elements to SCH when SGE's thing is "Healer that uses technology (alongside magic)".
yeah it's pretty clear those are claw marks, and at 92 bootshine turns into leaping oppo, with the skill icon looking like the job icon and the animation basically the monk scratching enemies too. I might be biased bc its my main job but I love the design, simple but delivers the vibe well
MCH main here! (I also switch back and forth between pronunciations) I love that it's a gun. I am the gun job, here is my icon, it is a gun. About the only thing I could think for them to have used instead would be, like, the turret? Thats kinda the two big things from original machinist: Turret and Gun. (Also, big lmao to the Summoner's horn thing because uuuhhhhhh.... I've just had hats turned off since I started. I made sure I liked my hair for a reason, and most hats take it away from me, so why would I not toggle hats off?)
When Beastmaster comes out you should revisit this, add Beastmaster and Blue Mage to the tier list, and also do the DoL and DoH classes and the non job stone combat classes. Also, as a BRD main for combat, I'd honestly put it at B tier for combat roles but S for it's out of combat role, Performance mode. I'd move BLM and PCT both up to S Rank, and DNC up to A. I think they all evoke thoughts of their respective jobs perfectly. MNK would be moved to F because it's so unclear what it should actually represent. It is easily recognizable but it's poor design to me. SCH, I've never thought of the icon as glasses, but as a scroll that's been unrolled and you're reading the center portion with the ends hanging down on either end and because it's been bound tightly for a long time the ends still curve upward and want to return to their coiled resting position. I'd still give it a C rank, maybe a B but no higher.
I am a little biased, but I always felt WHM was an amazing icon. Anything that captures the vibe through aesthetics and not just symbolism is really well done, I think. Realistically, it could represent a BLM too, but it just doesn't look mean enough at all. I'd be interested in you doing the classes, mainly because their icons are usually a lot more complex than the job icons (and also a lot more literal, for that matter). I actually feel like there is a disconnect in the design philosophy between "job" and "class".
I'm pretty sure monks icon is meant to be the "Heaven" symbol from "I Ching", mostly known from the top left part of the south korean flag nowdays. Bard did used to be a caster! They used to have a fair amount of cast times and stylistic elemental spells, they've slowly changed to what they are now over like 5 expansions. I always saw machinists icon as a weird wrench gun hybrid which was a fun combo.
Can't believe you never saw the dragon's head in the Dragoon icon, it was so clear to me that I never even considered the "spear thrusting downward" interpretation, and now I like it way more lol. I would definitely put it in S-tier myself. I never noticed RDM's rapier being WHM's staff upside-down, that's super cool I personally always interpreted the circle on Reaper as representing the Avatar you summon. Maybe I'm just dirty-minded, but if I had to say the Dancer Icon was any *thing*, it's a top that accentuates the bust like the Thavnairian Bustier, lol. I think the people misremembering the Dancer icon as being a chakram might've been mixing it up with Samurai's tbh
I'm surprised that you didn't clock that the reaper symbol looks like a scythe decapitating a head, although admittedly it would be easier to read if the little teardrop marking was at the 'neck'.
In defense of the reaper, if you pick the right dialogue options talking to Zero, she comments that your relationship with your avatar is equitable and the avatar seems like its on board.
Yep I believe its also stated in the reaper quest itself that it's a contract of sorts you form which fits how much fair trade of aether is valued in the 13th whereas Zenos just kinda grabbed Zero and went "We are business partners now. This is nonnegotiable."
There might have also been an opportunity to speak about the classes before you get the job stones, and blue mage (Where would you rank them ?). Otherwise, intersting topic ! I've always thought they're part of the job identity,. And as a SMN main, I absolutely love my icon for no good reason. ;p
If I were a more cromulent player, I would have offered insight into actually playing the classes. But being an idiot Red Mage Main with about 6 months experience, I offer what I know 😅 As for Blue Mage, maybe when Beastmaster comes out we'll have to do a Part Two...
The gladiator icon has always been a mystery to me. Why does it have two swords? You only use one sword. It's also now reallyy off-putting since viper came out. Can't tell you how many times I just intuitively clicked on the gladiator icon for viper weapons on the market board, since it's just two swords like what viper uses
I havent finished the video but I have to comment on the SCH one, to me it looks like glasses convinen with an open book. of course the arches are much wider and exagerated than any book would be, but the curve at the top is to me very much like the spine of a book.

Completely dropped the ball on Reaper. 43:27 the circle and the dimple on it represents the player and the way they are facing. Think about the way the player holds the scythe. Thats what this icon is, its a direct translation of the players stance and the direction they face when holding their scythe. Dont even play reaper at all, but it still sucks that you missed that little trait. i always thought it made reaper one of the better looking icons for that reason. Its grim, its edgy, its the player.
"The warrior icon is stupid simple and doesn't show the job well"
Warrior questline starts and ends with hitting big rocks with axe*
Hmm, when you put it that way....
The reading of Gunbreaker symbol as 'Gun barrel being broken" is still pretty damn inspired, even if it isn't immediately clear on first view.
I would say that the DRK symbol looks like a greatsword with magic coming off of it as originally they were the "magic tank" and they have spells and skills. Specifically it reminds me of the skill Abyssal Drain which has been around in some form since its release.
I'm losing my mind immediately at "decipher the sea of almost-swatstikas"
I call it how I see it, and those things tried REAL hard to avoid being swastikas!

Samurai also looks a bit like the sweeping circular AoE, or like the Moon Slash. As well as the Yin Yang symbol, pointing at the eastern origin.
The circle in Reaper is supposed to be a sort of spirit flame, as well as a reference to the summoned voidsent.

I always assumed the monk icon was meant to represent claw marks because of the animal stances of the job. Bird, cat, monkey. The icon is cat stance
Like, the entire job is built around changing fighting forms to that of different animals. It makes perfect sense that the icon is animalistic
