*Here's a fact:* Lafcadio Hearn, a writer, has a Japanese name and it's Koizumi Yakumo. Maribel's last name is Hearn, and Yukari's last name is Yakumo. *Here's another fact:* Maribel Hearn's designs look similar to Yukari Yakumo's in Perfect Cherry Blossom, complete with the mob cap and the purple dress, but without the umbrella. But in Neo-traditionalism Of Japan, she's now wearing a pale-blue blouse and a blue-purple skirt, but she still keeps the mob cap. *Here's a slightly unrelated fact:* "Yukari Yakumo" is probably not Yukari's real name, as according to Rinnosuke, and it's claimed that Yukari chose the name herself. *Here's a mostly unrelated fact:* Yukari's color is purple and Reimu's color is red, and they're in both ends of the spectrum of colors. *Here's a totally irrelevant fact:* Casein is made through mixing warm milk with vinegar and cooking the solid particles left, similar to how cheese was made. It's used in the past to make knife handles or buttons, until the invention of plastic.

The shape in the mirror flashed a face I wouldn't be caught dead making... and then spoke... "Young child, you seek to know what's between the fabric of the world, do you not?" The reflection said in a oddly soothing voice. I nod yes, and then things got weird. Literally reaching through the mirror, the reflection cupped its hand on my face. The touch was both cold and warm at the same time. "Ah, I remember what it was like to be young." The reflection's hand found its way to the top of my head and gave it a gentle pat. I want to be creeped out, but somehow I can't. "Wide-eyed, curious about the world, making stories they insist are real." The reflection said. "Who are you? What are you?" I asked the girl in the mirror. The reflections gives small laugh. "Who I am and what I am are irrelevant. What matters is that I intend to make your dreams a reality." Now the girl's hand is on my arm and I am being pulled through the mirror. On the other side, the room has now become a dark red landscape with creepy looking eyeballs everywhere. The reflection has now been replaced with an older looking woman with a parasol in hand. "Where are you taking me?" I ask the strange lady. The lady laughed in response. "Now you ask the right questions. I am taking you to a world one can only dream about, a world I call: Gensokyo." Gensokyo? Was that the place I was dreaming of? The mystery lady tapped her parasol on the ground and now the red has been replaced with white. "I hope it's all you dreamed of, Maribel Hearn..."

O shit, Lafcaido Hearn lived in Greece than moved to Japan going by the name of Koizumi Yakumo So then could it be possible that Maribel Hearn lived in Japan than moved to Gensokyo going by the name of *Yukari Yakumo*
Maribel often traveled through time in her dreams. Her memento was found in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost in Gensokyo. The condition it was in suggested that it was hundreds of years old, older than Gensokyo itself. It’s easy to assume that she travelled a thousand years into the past while dreaming, her ability evolved, and she awakened into another time. She would then go on to become Yukari and create Gensokyo.
Meribel has to be yukari, all the signs point to it. Firstly the reference to lafcadio hearn who changed his last name to yakumo upon traveling abroad, and Secondly through the character design and abilities of both yukari and meribel. since its implied that the gensokyo of meribel's time is in ruins.... My personal take is that at a certain point, meribel travels to the past and becomes yukari yakumo, attempting to save gensokyo from whatever catastrophe brought its demise.
This is an interesting theory. If you haven't yet, I do reccomejd reading the story of the latest Hifuu album - Taboo Japan Disentanglement, as I'd love to hear your thoughts on your previous theory in regards to that new story.

Well, it is a popular fan theory that she and Yukari are the same person, or at least related, and ZUN himself hinted at this possibility. The theme only adds to the theories, considering that Maribel is supposed to be a normal human in canon...

Uhh, I have a question: is there any relevance in reading the mangas besides the new characters and interesting tidbits about the regular characters from the games (it doesnt seem much in context, I know, but you can easily find these informations in the wiki so that`s why I am asking)? If so, where can I find a way to read them? I am kinda curious to know more about the manga-only characters and to see if there is anything interesting that comes within the mangas too. Heck, I only know about the Three Mischievous Fairies (Luna Child, Sunny Milk and Star Sapphire) and Kasen because of Great Fairy Wars and Urban Legend in Limbo (and the wiki), since I mostly look at the games, so my knowledge about the characters outside the games is very limited. Also, did anyone else come here from Touhoumon? Just started playing World Link so that`s why I am asking about that.
+Ultimate Zero42 You can read most of, if not all the manga on Bato.to. You have to make an account, which is relatively painless. And yes, I would HIGHLY recommend reading the mangas. Since the games themselves can't really show too much plot due to the fact that it's a bullethell, the mangas take the role of expanding that plot, which is why the Touhou world is rich with story and detail. Although there isn't really too much a particular order in reading them, I'd say Silent Sinner in Blue, Wild and Horned Hermit, and Forbidden Scrollery are all the best ones in my opinion.
Youkai Jesus Hmm, I should give it a try then sometime. It doesnt really have too much violence, though, is there? Just kinda curious, since I dont really like too much violence. XD
Ultimate Zero42 Nope. Just as there's very little violence in the actual games, there's little to no violence at all in the books. The worst there might be is a little blood on very rare occasions.
I personally think Merry is Yukari from an alternate universe, where she herself didnt understand her power, sometimes even activating it uncounciously in her dreams, going to unknown worlds, she doesnt understand the full capacities of her own power, thus remaining human. Renko could be Sumireko's alternate too,but I dont have enough clues.

First, yes, I believe Maribel is, through timey-wimey shenanigans, Yukari's past self. I also kind of imagine this song to Renko finding that out, if only for the beginning. Not so much in the manner of fearing Merry will eat her like any youkai would, but more so in the implications of being forcibly separated from her best friend/potential lover and living with that for 1,400 years, not to mention becoming functionally immortal. Of course, being that guy, I imagine they could work out a happily ever after together, but I know people like imagining the angst of a mortal lover dying. I was just listwning this on a train Station, and a few times was quite sure I heard characteristic sound of train brakes, more than once, even though there was no train in sight. If it is true, this song might be a bit connected with train, which would be yet another connection between Maribaeri and Yukari. I would be glad if someone confirmed my finding or if I am halucinating
This song makes it feel like it's a mix of Touhou itself, Submachine by Mateusz Skutnik, Crash Bandicoot, Earthbound, Castlevania, a portal to hell, Synthesia having a creepy glitch, the beginning of Kalinka, Star Trek, Half-Life, Digimon Data Squad, God's Playing Field, and falling down that really deep drain in Mirror's Edge.
Girom Christian Calica Not nearly enough to understand why I said that. It's not that the music is similar, it's that the music carries the same feeling.
Adrian Tepes Although the mentioning of "scientific" to this song now makes this song feel like there's some sort of portals to other dimensions or ancient relics having functional properties and being weapons of mass destruction in a futuristic setting. The first parts however are reminiscent of a girl totally insane and unable to decide which is real life and which is just a dream, so she asks her best friend to decide. Wait, more than half of this is part of Maribel's story :P

I get chills from this...love it so much
This song makes it feel like it's a mix of Touhou itself, Submachine by Mateusz Skutnik, Crash Bandicoot, Earthbound, Castlevania, a portal to hell, Synthesia having a creepy glitch, the beginning of Kalinka, Star Trek, Half-Life, Digimon Data Squad, God's Playing Field, and falling down that really deep drain in Mirror's Edge.
...Or it came straight out of an RPGMaker horror game.
Adrian Tepes Played Misao, Mad Father, Witch's House, and Ib. Barely anything that is close to this song :P
Girom Christian Calica Sounds like an RPGMaker horror game to me. And if you couldn't tell, no, I do not know anything about Maribel.
