Great to see you use the Cliff Gaff, Matt! Here in Australia we tie it to a thicker attachment line to help with line management so it doesn’t tangle when we need to deploy it. Also to help stay on the fishing line we secure the gaff opening with a clip or tape before we deploy it down to the fish. Hope this helps and looking forward to seeing your version of it get release!

When I was in the 4th Grade my teacher who lived in Shell Beach, CA. was walking along the cliffs near her home with her husband. Her husband got close to the edge, the cliff gave way, and he fell to the rocks below. He lived, but was definitely jacked up! Fishermans Life, we love you bro! And your brother Daniel too. If you were single, I could understand temping fate, but you have a wife and 3 children. If something were to befall you, where would they be? The loss would be devastating to us all! Dope stuff man! Just a tip from someone who’s fished this way in Hawaii a lot: a longer rod with a bit more backbone than what you’d normally use to fish the rocks is good for fishing cliffs because It will allow you to attach the slide gaf higher off the ground so you won’t need to get as close to the edge.

I suggested to use this gaff after I saw that video. Glad to see you got it. Although it's a bigger one and you paid way more than I did on eBay the split ring should be way closer than that. Basically the metal bars should touch each other and barely slip the line in. Should use a 3/8 rope tied to the top ring and it should be in a bag pre organized loose so it comes out in the right order. Mine is a 100 ft rope and the small storage bag is clipped on my fishing backpack making a one man job easy. I pulled fish up 80 ft cliffs around neah bay , Washington with no trouble. If you pm me I'll send you a short video with my set up. Stay safe

We’ve used cliff gaffs in Hawaii for years but I’ve never seen one in a store. We always made them ourselves. Much smaller than that one, the best designs were made of a an inch and a half by 4 inch galvanized pipe nipple. Three big trolling hooks. I improved on the dangling hooks by instead attaching them to spring steel straps so that the hooks were rigid and always faced inward. Once it made contact with the fish’s head, the springs let the hooks open up and usually all three hooks grabbed the fish. The way we made sure the gaff couldn’t slip off the line was, a slot was cut diagonally down the length of the pipe so that the line being straight, couldn’t find its way back through the crooked slot. The whole pipe was slid down with the line running right up through the pipe. It never slipped off. I’ve seen guys cut that slot straight, and theirs always slipped off the line. The trick was the diagonal slot.
Good going though, Matt! Got two lings in with that sloppy cliff gaff. Didn’t even fall of the cliff either. Spooky brah.

Go the Aussie gaff. Despite the frustrations, it got you a couple of good fish. Some more practice required and perhaps better rope management. I suspect the device was designed for large diameter monofilament rather than braid. Some silicone tubing over the ends of the steel loop would close the gap so the line wouldn't slip out, although you might have to remove a little material. Regards from NZ.

Hi Matt...several people have already made some very good suggestions on how best to employ, & improve, that cliff gaff rig...&, at least one commentor mentioned Gido's TH-cam cliff fishing channel from South Australia 🇦🇺....Gido is a very solid rock climber & fisherman--he employs both skill sets masterfully to access some really incredible, & otherwise virtually impossible to reach, fishing locations in a safe manner...he's an expert at using the cliff gaff, but even he has plenty of difficulty landing a big fish with it sometimes...I'm a former co-worker of your good friend Andrew...we're both ER RN's, plus I work a lot Trauma--you absolutely must wear a rock climbing safety harness & secure yourself to solid & immovable attachment point before fishing so close to the cliff's edge...you already slipped once on that loose rope laying on the ground (luckily it happened when you were far enough back from the edge that you didn't fall over)...please take some better safety measures, if you're going to do anymore cliff fishing!

They were flying a kite and she wasn’t even close to the edge but must have stumbled a ways- he was paying out the line and looking down and didn’t see her go over. • @jasonborn867
    @jasonborn867 ปีที่แล้ว

Loved the video Matt! Here's a way to improve the cliff gaff. Use rebar to form a locking collar ring that holds three Australian size treble hooks with nylon rope secured to the collar. The trick is your metal ring latches around the fish line, then closes and rides down the line slipping over the bobber stopping at the fish's head. The large trebles just pass over the body but hook the fish when collar is retrieved. Heavy metal ring, large trebles, long nylon rope = cliff gaff!

The top ring is for a secure, sturdy knotted line. You thread the gaff onto your fishing line at the split and lower it down using your fishing line as a guide.

When you need to gaff from a height like that, clip the carabiner to the main line so the gaff runs down the main fishing line right to the fish instead of trying to align it from that height.

That's a crazy contraption for landing fish. I'd get a "Cuban yoyo" handline spool or something like that to keep the rope untangled. I'm definitely curious about using it from a pier or bridge. But it's awfully expensive. It looks easy enough to make.
Those waves are incredible. I grew up around the Gulf Of Mexico and we didn't have waves like that without a hurricane. You guys are dedicated, that's gnarly conditions for fishin'.

Hey Matt, the Aussie's use some type of retainer with very strong line. Then, they drop the gaff with the retainer so it goes exactly where the fishing line ends. Makes it a lot easier. Look it up!

Hey Matt comment by Sean Callahan used a pipe with a diagonal slit for the line. Maybe using that style with a heavy rod in the situation would keep you off the side of the cliff. You could test it in a controlled environment and when confident have it where you don't have to look down the cliff. I'm a diyer who works on CCSF buildings HVAC, power and water. I fish as well growing up in San Mateo but I'm in Tracy now with a one and a half year old daughter. I can't wait to get her out on trails and fishing.

oh man, that was intense to watch. interesting tool for bringing it in, I`ve been thinking about making something like that for years. I would have used an old rod and a big reel to use with the tool to have better control of the hole process. man I want to go fishing now :D

Hey man, long time viewer. Just a word of warning for you from a rock climber. That cliff is very bad rock quality AKA "choss". I would be careful putting so much weight on the cliff edge when you were sitting on it. You could dislodge a large chunk of rock if you get unlucky. Love your vids man, stay safe!

They have cliff nets you can buy same look kinda it's metal circle in middle is the net you'll put the fish in and pull up it's way easier trust me.

In Florida we call that gaff,a bridge/pier gaff and I've seen small than that at a much much lesser price. I'm going to go investigate where to find that particular gaff for you.
When I think about it now the ones I have seen, may have been handmade locally and sold at the tackle shop.
The smaller when is use the same way .
