Hey Jeff, thank you so much for posting these videos and exercises; they've proven incredibly helpful and allowed me to regain a good part of my range that, due to being out of practice for so long, I thought I'd pretty much lost! I did these exercises before recording my most recent vocal cover due to the way I intended to sing it - much more lightly than my usual belting - and I couldn't believe the flexibility and control I had. Your videos are fantastic and your style of teaching is excellent, so thank you once again for all your help and best of luck with everything :)
Thank you so much! I am thrilled beyond measure to know that these tutorials are helping singers such as you find the ease and freedom in their voice. More to come so please stay tuned. And please feel free to share the videos with your fellow singers. Peace and harmony to you. Jeff
My older brother took testosterone and it made his voice deeper by 4 notes less Is there any way he can increase his range back to c6 with this exercises or it won't work. His voice also became raspy and he's down about it.
If your brother is a singer, taking hormones such as testosterone can definitely lower the voice significantly. The vocal folds thicken with testosterone replacements. He would likely have to stop using it for a while to reverse the effects.
Thanks Jeffrey ! This is helping me get my voice back. I've had 4 surgeries to remove pre-cancerous masses from my vocal chords, and I'm seeing a speech pathologist. I appreciate your help....
Only after a few try of your exercises, I feel my voice is more focus, less shaky and I can control it better when singing higher notes. this technique helps actually in my general toning of the voice. I am so happy. I never knew such important concept and technique until your videos. You are awesome! By pressing the finger gently on the chin works like magic too. Hi Paty. The best way to increase power in the low notes is to work on bring the head voice down as low as possible into the chest register. This allows the throat to stay open when singing low and balances the chest register. Once this is achieved, then you can begin to add more frontal resonance to the lower tones. What most singers do wrong in the lower register is try to add more weight in the chest voice. This will only dull the sound and drop the soft palate. Try a descending 5 notes scale on the "ae" vowel sound as in cat. Maintain the integrity and the slightly edgy sound as in cat all the way down but keep your soft palate lifted. This will keep the space and the frontal resonance all the way down. Hope this helps and thanks for watching! Please subscribe if you haven't already. Peace and happy singing to you!

You are doing this to hold the jaw back. Make sure the jaw does not jut forward as you increase the volume. The sound should feel as if it is intensifying into the head, not straight out the mouth. Hey Jeff, my name is Anthony and I'm from a Caribbean island called Trinidad. One Question will these exercises help me to sing Legato? And kind you please do a video on Legato
Firstly,i honour the great job u r doing.Being a singer,i suspect whether our body infuence our singing voice.Isn't it harder for someone having larger and taller body(naturally they have a huge ,bass vocal chord) to hit high notes. If so how can a singer manage this?
Hello Frank. You didn't mention exactly how tall you are, but I'm assuming, according to your post, over 6 feet tall? First off, I've known and taught many very tall singers who, after years of careful training, are able to comfortably sing to a full voice B flat and above. If you have longer, thicker cords like a bass, this may prove challenging, but certainly not impossible. The most important thing is to work with a qualified, knowledgable vocal coach like me, who understands how to teach the male passagio for all voice types, and designs exercises specific for your voice type. Have you considered online voice lessons? I hope you are subscribed ro the channel and please be sure to turn on the notifications button to receive all the latest tutorials. Every singer feels things differently. As long as you are not engaging the throat muscle, don't worry if you are not feeling a contraction in your abs. The exercises in this tutorial are designed to thin the vocal folds and they don't require super connected support. Hope that helps you! There are lots of tutorial on support on my channel. Thanks so much for watching and hope you are subscribed. 🙂
a'Jatta Thank you for your comment. Vocal cord closure is addressed extensively on my instructional DVD/Cd. I plan on doing another video regarding cord closure in the coming months, so stay tuned and thanks for watching!
Anthony, this exercise will definitely help you sing legato more easily because the more lean and pliable the vocal cords are, the easier it is to glide from one note to another smoothly in an unbroken sound! Hope this answered your question! Thanks so much, Jeff
I'm starting to hit some high notes with very closed cords. It's unintentionally loud and it's like the cords try to connect and then suddenly slam together. Vowels sound awesome to me and it's really connected but I can't pronounce any words like this at all! Any kind of glottal stop or hard consonant stops the sound dead! Do I have to try and add some nasality to allow some air to still flow during the stops? Many thanks.
One of the mistakes singers make is trying to avoid singing with the consonants. Every consonant has a purpose. For instance “S” can help you to move the air. “M” can create more resistance to hold the air pressure back. “Y” is good jaw release. Try singing every consonant with a different vowel on a simple scale. See if you are blocking what the consonant is trying to do. Once you learn to sing with the consonants you should have less stoppage of the sound. Hope this helps and so sorry it took me so long to reply! Thanks for watching and hope you’re subscribed!
I would like to know if you should sing with thin/thick vocal folds with constant pressure inside your lung or you need more pressure with diaphragm as you go higher. Thanks a lot for your support
Hi Jeff...I am a professional singer since long time.My voice sounds strained and hoarse since 3/4 years.I had consulted reknowed ENT specialist doctors from Mumbai and according to them my Vocal Folds are absolutely fine but they advised me to take speech therapy lessons.I did take it.But still my voice is not sounding smooth and it is not the same as usual. It cracks when I try to touch high notes. It absolutely sounds good at lower octave but it starts sounding hoarse at middle octave and higher octave again it is not sounding good.It sounds scratchy.I am following your exercises just 3days before and felt that I should ask you about my problem.pl guide me.I need your help urgently
I really enjoy your enthusiasm and expertise. Why is the finger held against the lips in the second exercise? Also, how many minutes of daily vocal exercise do you recommend? Can it be overdone? Thanks.
Hi Nodiah. Thank you for your comment and your question. The finger pressed against the lip helps the singer to feel the vibration of the voice on the hard palate. It basically allows you to "reference the vibration" so that the sound stays forward and not let it drop back in the throat. As far as how often you do this, I would suggest doing it a little every day until you feel that your vocal cords are lean and pliable. Any concept can be taken too far, so use it but don't abuse it! Make sense? Thanks so much for watching! Peace and harmony to you, Jeff
Can you offer me some general tips for falsetto. My falsetto can be really great sometimes but other times it is tight and feels very taxing to get the note out. Even if the note comes out it is very tensed. What can I do to sing in my falsetto more easily without pushing?
The question I always forget to ask is...do these warmups still work well if practiced early on the day of a performance or must they be practiced as close to the actual performance time as possible?
Nodiah I practice these throughout the day as I am teaching and talking a lot. So I need to keep my cords lean all the time. Of course you can overdo any concept or exercise. If your cords feel pliable and ready to go then you shouldn't need to do it more than a couple of times a day. Hope this helps! Peace, Jeff
Hi Christopher. Yes, the throat should be as free of tension as possible while doing this exercise. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching! Peace, Jeff
Hi there! You don’t need to do this more than 10-15 minutes per vocal workout. Your cords should feel nice and lean within the time mentioned when done on a consistent basis. Thanks for watching and please turn your notifications button on as there are more tutorials coming out very soon! Peace and happy singing. ✌️🎶🎶🎶🎶
Yes, the finger on the upper lip, helps the singer to feel hard palate vibration, which in turn, encourages the sound the come forward. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching and happy singing!
Jeff! Love your videos. I applied this exercise today in my warm up, and my singing has been somewhat airy after doing it. The sound isn’t breathy per say, but I can hear air leakage coming through that I’ve never heard before. Even with hard consonants at the onset, I’m hearing it. I’m wondering if it’s just the transition into the dry winter weather or something. Maybe I did the exercise wrong?
Sounds like you are pushing too much air pressure through the vocal folds. The exact opposite of breathy should occur after doing this exercise. The idea is to create a lot of vibrational tone with not a lot of air escaping. Some of my students say it sounds like a Kazoo when it's right and that's a good audible reference. This takes a little while to get the hang of. If you listen closely to my demonstration of the exercise, you will hear a lot of buzzy tone but not a lot of air escaping. As a male singer you are likely very strong. Remember, the vocal folds in a male voice are only about an inch long, so if you are pushing a lot of breath pressure against the folds they will separate causing either breathiness or a squeeze in the laryngeal muscles, neither of which we want. Watch the demonstration and see if you can hear what I'm doing. I've been teaching this concept for a long time with great results. It's actually being used in speech therapy for people with extremely breathy voices. Hope this helps and thanks for watching. Peace. Jeff
Hi Jeff. You are such a mensch. On the voiced V exercise, is all of the air supposed to come out of the mouth instead of the nose? Is it best to use a combination?
Hello Nodiah. Yes the air should all come out of the mouth. However, you want to try and create as much vibrational sound as possible with the least amount of air. So if you hear a lot of air escaping, you're pushing too much air through. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching! Peace, Jeff
Okay, at the risk of sounding ignorant, is all vocalizing supposed to come out of the mouth instead of the nose? Because when I sing with nasal resonance and ring, I can detect breath flow coming out of the nose. I really want to make sure that I am doing this correctly.
There are no ignorant questions here, just uninformed ones. When you do this exercise, try holding your nose with one hand and using finger against the upper lip with the other hand. This will insure that the air is coming out of the mouth. This concept is not dissimilar to the straw technique in that you are trapping sound in the mouth and only allowing the sound to come through a tiny opening in the mouth. When you do the exercise, be sure you are creating a lot of buzzy vibration and not allowing a lot of air to escape. Hope this helps! Peace
this is hughe problem for me. My voice is also weak sounding in the higher range as well. It is very light sounding with hardly any edge to it, like mix to it.
Hey Mark. The tongue will function best when the tip is resting behind the lower front teeth. If you feel your tongue retracting this will prevent the larynx from doing its job if tilting for the high notes. I hope this answers your question and thanks so much for watching and hope you’re subscribed. More coming soon!!
@@JeffAlaniStanfill thanks Jeff…further. When doing a hum on MM….if I keep the tongue against the bottom teeth lightly it makes my lips purse a little….more as I go up. Is this correct? As I’ve been stretching the lips more to a smile in an attempt t9 feel a a buzz on the lips. This also applies to the V…..
@@MarkBennett007 Hey Mark, I wouldn't worry too much about your lips pursing especially if they are staying in a rounded position for the humm. Perhaps this is your body's response that is natural.
Hello Noor. I cannot guarantee that your voice will not be loud after doing these exercises but I can say it will likely be leaner not as heavy. A loud voice can be trained to sound lighter, but this is often a breath management issue. Thank you for watching. More informative videos that may help you with this are coming soon! Peace and harmony to you. Jeff
Cracking is caused by a lack of consistent air flow during a phrase of a song. Try hissing the phrase that's giving you trouble in a song. You'll notice that the abdominals will be engaged while hissing. Then keep that sensation when you go to sing a phrase of a song. Cracking occurs the moment the breath stops. Remember, The vocal cords vibrate because air is going through them and causing them to close which creates sound. When the air stops the vocal folds have no reason to vibrate. Hope this helps! 🌞🎶🎶🎶
ho Ho This is a concept you can use whenever your cords feel thick. Once you get the vocal cords lean, you’ll be able to feel when they are puffed up or swollen.
Faraaz, first off you need to be working with a vocal coach who can help you develop your head voice. It sounds like your voice is lacking head voice resonance, which is what gives a voice beauty and high overtones. But, I cannot say this is absolutely the issue unless I heard you first. Hope this helps! Peace, Jeff
Hello there. Being a tenor doesn't necessarily translate to thinner vocal cords. The exercise presented here is great for all voice regardless of vocal type. Tenors need to access the thinner edges of the vocal folds which is why this exercise is so important. Also, n matter how thin your cords are, there are times when they will thicken due to colds, flu or allergens, so having this exercise in your tool box will serve them well! Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe if you haven't already for all the latest updates. Peace and harmony to you, Jeff Alani Stanfill
Is it important to take lip buzzes to the top of your range. Because when I do it in my lower range, it’s not always effective. So I’m think I should take it in my head voice and upper register.
Hello there. Yes, it is important to take this exercises as high as you can comfortably, and without inviting any throat tension. One way to achieve this is by taking it up on a 1-3-5-8-5-3-1 arpeggio scale. Pay attention to your throat muscles. If you feel them tighten then stop and start over until you feel the throat muscles relax. I hope that helps you! Peace and happy singing :-)

I have been trying for 12 years my singing...it is not easy and up to now and this is my question..over the years I had about 7 different singing coaches and online there are millions. Anthony, this exercise will definitely help you sing legato more easily because the more lean and pliable the vocal cords are, the easier it is to glide from one note to another smoothly in an unbroken sound! Hope this answered your question! Thanks so much, Jeff
Is this helpful sir like me have a low voice?
So okay what if the problem of thicking came from temp use of Hormornal Treatement
For that you would need to see a doctor or holsitic practicioner to get your hormones in balance.
Also will this make my singing have sort of a cutesy sound to it? Like kind of make my voice sound higher pitched?
Thinner vocal folds will definitely allow you to sing higher pitches easier!
Peace and harmony to you,
Jeff
Yes Thank you so much.
Can you offer me some general tips for falsetto. My falsetto can be really great sometimes but other times it is tight and feels very taxing to get the note out. Even if the note comes out it is very tensed. What can I do to sing in my falsetto more easily without pushing?
please make a video about hoarse voice. please please .
my vocie tries to shift to chesty mix voice..should i let it happen or should i continue to phonate with my chest
voice?
Love from India :)
Will this exercise help me hit high notes?
Most definitely this exercise will help you with high notes! Thanks for watching!
Peace, Jeff
Makes sense. Thanks.
So your throat should still be relaxed and open when doing this, right?
Hi Christopher. Yes, the throat should be as free of tension as possible while doing this exercise. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching! Peace, Jeff
For how much time do we need to do that
Hi there! You don’t need to do this more than 10-15 minutes per vocal workout. Your cords should feel nice and lean within the time mentioned when done on a consistent basis. Thanks for watching and please turn your notifications button on as there are more tutorials coming out very soon! Peace and happy singing. ✌️🎶🎶🎶🎶
Can u pls explain why we have to put the finger in front of the lips? Is it to put pressure in it on just to feel vibration?
Typo: “ or “ just to
Yes, the finger on the upper lip, helps the singer to feel hard palate vibration, which in turn, encourages the sound the come forward. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching and happy singing!
How to mould vocal chord into compatible for singing high notes/pitch and sweet?
Check out the reply I gave you.
How does the lip buzz work. How does it thin?
Peace. Jeff
Aww great
Peace
Brilliant! Thank you.
How long will it take to thin the vocal cords? And is it permanent?
Keeping the vocal cords thinned out allows them to close more precisely. This also allows the voice to have more flexibility and pliability.
Do you teach private lessons on skype and how much?
Victoria, you can contact me regarding Skype lessons at jeff@voicesoaring.com. Thank you!
New sub cuz the smile!
DTuned thank you!
Great :)
Thank you so much!🌞🎶🎶🎶🎶
my voice its high but is thick iwant to have thin with high voice
this is hughe problem for me. My voice is also weak sounding in the higher range as well. It is very light sounding with hardly any edge to it, like mix to it.
what is happening if nose gets stuffy when singing high notes?
Would this help with mix voice ?
Yes absolutely! We need leaner cords to access the mix! Thanks for watching!
Where is the tip of the tongue placed when ex vowels…. Eg at the bottom of the bottom teeth near the gum?
Hey Mark. The tongue will function best when the tip is resting behind the lower front teeth. If you feel your tongue retracting this will prevent the larynx from doing its job if tilting for the high notes. I hope this answers your question and thanks so much for watching and hope you’re subscribed. More coming soon!!
@@JeffAlaniStanfill Thank you Jeff….have subscribed.
Perhaps this is your body's response that is natural.
hello I want my voice to be thinner as it is very laud and heavy
Jeff
and Jeff my voice is cracking so what to do!??
Cracking is caused by a lack of consistent air flow during a phrase of a song. Try hissing the phrase that's giving you trouble in a song. You'll notice that the abdominals will be engaged while hissing. Then keep that sensation when you go to sing a phrase of a song. Cracking occurs the moment the breath stops. Remember, The vocal cords vibrate because air is going through them and causing them to close which creates sound. When the air stops the vocal folds have no reason to vibrate. Hope this helps! 🌞🎶🎶🎶
Will this be permanent or temporary
ho Ho This is a concept you can use whenever your cords feel thick. Once you get the vocal cords lean, you’ll be able to feel when they are puffed up or swollen.
@@JeffAlaniStanfill omg thank you so much
Jeff my name is faraaz and my voice is very very deep and harsh so what to do for this problem???
Faraaz, first off you need to be working with a vocal coach who can help you develop your head voice. It sounds like your voice is lacking head voice resonance, which is what gives a voice beauty and high overtones. But, I cannot say this is absolutely the issue unless I heard you first. Hope this helps! Peace, Jeff
Im a tenor does that mean my vocal folds are already thin?
Hello there. Being a tenor doesn't necessarily translate to thinner vocal cords. The exercise presented here is great for all voice regardless of vocal type. Tenors need to access the thinner edges of the vocal folds which is why this exercise is so important. Also, n matter how thin your cords are, there are times when they will thicken due to colds, flu or allergens, so having this exercise in your tool box will serve them well! Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe if you haven't already for all the latest updates. Peace and harmony to you, Jeff Alani Stanfill
@@JeffAlaniStanfill oh thx 😃😃
You have a higher and thinner voice but thinning out your voice applies to everyone.
You seem so happy and fun to be around can we go to Starbucks and get our nails done together whilst discussing vocal techniques
Allison Haywood definitely one of the best comments I’ve ever had on this channel! I love Starbucks!!!!
that sounded gay
@@JeffAlaniStanfill It was a wise answer to a smarty.
Does the lip buzz still work if you have no teeth????
I don't see why not!
Does this voice act like a vocal cord not comes out

why cant you tell us how to thin out the voice, as well as exercises?
Waoo...blessings Jeff...great exercise...the best I ever found..with the added benefit that it also works on vibratto. I have been trying for 12 years my singing...it is not easy and up to now and this is my question..over the years I had about 7 different singing coaches and online there are millions. Yet, none gas been able to make differentiate between head voice abd falsetto. It is my inability to get it, 👍. Can you do better than everyone in the world? My chanell is fernando da silva raposo..starting some music. 🙌
