Robert Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan, played by Cillian Murphy is literally a dream come true that I never could've imagined. The Oppenheimer biography was one of my favorite books I've ever read in my life, and then one of the BEST directors to ever live, plus my favorite actor.

@@Eserr7856 there is so much there, it's hard to pinpoint a lot, because it was about ten years ago, but the man was so very interesting. The one that I read also did such a good job of explaining the various concepts surrounding the research of the atomic bomb, as someone who never even took a physics class. It was called Oppenheimer - Portrait of an Enigma

Everybody on this chain should read Richard Rhodes's book, although you might all become nerds. Kai Bird's book was the source material for the film.
It’s a testament to Nolan that so many actors want to do more than a couple of pictures with him.
He listens to them and works with them when they have suggestions or ideas, and can be open and share them with Nolan. Interview with Michael Jai White about The Dark Knight, where he had a small role, and working with Nolan is really eye-opening to hear how much Nolan trusts his actors.

Cillian Murphy has certainly come a long way. I remember him in 28 Days Later which is low key great acting by him before he made it big time. I'm glad to hear Nolan doesn't have interest in the Marvel and DC comic movies. We need actors to push out highly quality content like this to keep Cinema relevant. Movies that have the flare for the dramatic that aren't all CGI and have a developed plot. This will definitely deliver on that.

Just got out of that movie. What an insane ending. Felt slow for a while, and confusing, but the last two hours flew, and all the confusion was cleared up. Damn though…What a mind trip. And timely, given all that’s happening now in the world. We may be on the brink of the end result of that chain reaction he started. Killian is perfect for the role.
Christopher Nolan s movies r more like scientific education than a movie. Hats off to his imagination ,creativeness, dedication and courage to make pure science films

Over 40 years ago the BBC did a series on Oppenheimer starring Sam Waterston. It was incredibly well done. I am very much looking forward to Nolan's movie.
I seem to remember a movie called "The One" which was good though may have been about the Manhattan Project.

Waterston had Oppenheimer's physical appearance and mannerisms down. throughly enjoyed it ... have the series and still watch it. this new version has character looking too plastic or suffering from plastic surgery gone wrong .nolan's casting of General Groves disappointing , could have had a better choice to play the role .
They could not of picked a better person to play Oppenheimer. The cast lineup is just top tier. How they arranged all that is worth a movie on its own. Wow. I haven't gone to the movies to watch a movie since Saving Private Ryan, I will be going for this one.

As with David Bowie as Nikolai Tesla and Heath Ledger as the Joker, a perfect casting of Cillian Murphy in the title role, a spitting image of the title character. A movie first, John Adams wrote an opera in the 2000's titled 'Dr. Atomic', bringing this story to the stage decades before this film. Still, it's Nolan, it's Going to be brilliant!🙂

Nolan's impact on cinema history with 12 movies only (!) is unmatched.
there were at least two movies that had Oppe as a major character that included his personal life, doubts and fears, one with Brian Dennehy and the other with Paul Newman, but with that said, I'm not going to miss this one.

Great to see Cork's finest leading the line in this one, it has all the signs of being a serious contender for the Oscars. We knew he'd reach the stars even as a lad in school
Although I like Nolan's vision, I would like to see how he fares in adapting other people's vision while integrating with his own. Nolan remaking Solaris would be something I would enjoy so much to see, because I think it does cater to his themes (so hes not a complete fish out of water), but it comes from a very different sensibility (so we could see how much he can flex or not trying to imbue a story that is already crystalized with his particular kind of film-making).
It's such a shame Oppenheimer felt he had such huge burden to carry. I mean i get it, he is the one who made it happen, but he did it because the alternative was unthinkable, just imagine what the world would look like today IF the Germans had made the bomb in 1943/1944. My blood freezes just thinking about it. Oppenheimer did it for all the right reasons, if he hadn't been the one, someone else would've done it eventually. I just think it's sad he blamed himself, he was just helping his country or maybe even all of humanity for that matter.
The US government black listed Oppenheimer after the war became he had Communist ties. His mistress Tadlock was a communist but she committed suicide. He lost control of the hydrogen bomb possibly because of Teller.
It was either the US or the Nazis. I can imagine how torn up he must have been to have had to help the US. It was simply the lesser of the two evils, I suspect.
Someone has to make a sacrifice whenever there are weapons involved.
Please. Learn some history. Germany surrendered in May of 1945, three months BEFORE the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. The USA and the USSR had been uneasy "allies" throughout World War II, and it was obvious that the alliance wouldn't hold beyond the war's conclusion, leaving two politically and economically opposed super-powers in the world. The USA dropped the bombs on Japan, essentially already defeated but for a declaration of surrender, for one reason and one reason only: To send the message to the USSR that we had this weapon and weren't afraid to use it. I admire the scientists who committed themselves to this effort, because the Soviets were not far behind us in the development of the bomb, but if you think the Nazis were the threat that prompted its use, you're missing the entire point.

It was in fact the Nazis and Heisenberg the Americans were afraid of, US even sent an assassin to take out Heisenberg if they thought he was close. In Norway, a special commando was sent to take out the heavy water plant in Rjukan to delay the Germans from making a bomb.
Oppenheimer himself has stated numerous times that it was the Germans they feared when they went into the Manhattan project as Heisenberg already was years ahead in the research, or at least this is what they thought.

It appears these days, you can't go wrong with Christopher Nolan. I am so pumped for this blockbuster since Robert Downey Jr. is back on the big screen in a film about the creation of the A-bomb.
Robert Downey Jr. should get more awesome projects like this & I and many fans will always miss him as Tony Stark/Iron Man.

This movie is the FOURTH one depicting Oppenheimer. The first was 'Fat Man and Little Boy' (1999) (otherwise known as 'Shadow Makers') featuring Dwight Schultz as Oppenheimer and Paul Newman as General Groves. The second was a mini-series called 'Manhattan' in which Oppenheimer was played by Daniel London. There was also a biopic by CBS about Oppenheimer with David Strathairn called 'Day One'
And what about the BBC mini-series in the early 80s starring Sam Waterston?

The “Shadow Makers “ ( known as Fat Man And Thin boy in the USA)film touched upon Oppenheimer’s personal life and his inner turmoil about developing the Atomic Bomb.

Yes, there was actually a feature film. Fat Man and Little Boy by Academy Award Nominee Roland Joffe. Released in 1989, it was about Project Manhattan and its third act was dedicated entirely to the Trinity Test. Dwight Schultz played Oppenheimer and Paul Newman played General Groves, who is played by Matt Damon in Nolan's Film.
Yeah it has to do with the rather sort attention span and know it all nature of the rising generation. Remember they have the internet and it teaches all.
This pushed me over the fence to go see the film when it's released.

Very excited to hear one of my favourite and beloved actors - Gary Oldman is in it. Fantastic. Very much a deep diver and have a deep interest in such subject's so to have a film come along from one of the most detail orientated and respected film directors being focused on it is something ive been hoping for for literal years

This is a phenomenal cast of very capable and talented actors.
To get the best experience, a Christopher Nolan film is meant to be watched on the big screen. I can't wait since this film has elite actors that will for sure have us at the edge of our seats.
Actually, Sam Waterston played the role of Robert Oppenheimer in a PBS miniseries biopic in 198o. Then there was followed by “Fat Man and Little Boy” in 1989 starring Paul anew man as General Leslie R. Groves who was responsible for overseeing the Manhattan Project.
Nolan sent the film crew to space to shoot Interstellar, created a time machine to film Tenet, now he built a bomb to film Oppenheimer.
The BBC series "Oppenheimer" from the 1980s was excellent. Cant imagine a shorter film treating the subject better.

Brilliant display of IMAX and characters in this moving biopic showing Einstein, Werner Heisenberg, Neils Bohr, Edward Teller, Ernest Lawrence and the central character , Oppenheimer. All the luminaries of Physics in one movie.
Fresh out of the movie theater - please see this movie in 70mm format if you can. It was visually stunning and I was in awe for the first several minutes. Christopher Nolan is ushering in a renaissance in visual fidelity for film.

It may be the first biopic on the big screen, but certainly not the first time the tale was told. BBC did a marvelous docudrama in 1980 (7 parts, about 6-7 hours). With the exception of Sam Watterson playing Oppie, most of the cast were spot on spitting images of the actual characters. Cillian Murphy fits the image of Oppenheimer to a T, but Matt Damon as Gen. Groves? He would have to gain about 150 lbs. in order to even come close! However I'm really anxious to see this movie and will be taking notes.

While the definition of "biopic" might be "a FILM based on the life of a famous person" the 1980 BBC production of the Oppenheimer TV mini-series is the production I will be comparing Nolan's movie to. The mini-series ran for seven hours and it covered Oppenheimer before and after the Manhattan Project. Sam Waterston played J. Robert Oppenheimer.
It will especially interesting to see how Kitty Oppenheimer is portrayed. In the BBC mini-series she is portrayed as highly opinionated and very protective of her husband. She was openly critical and vocal of those she perceived as her husbands enemies. Not an especially sympathetic portrayal. Well played by actress Jana Shelden.
The series was nominated for multiple awards and won a few BAFTA's.
Actually this will not be the first film/video version of Oppenheimer's life. Sam Waterston did a brilliant job as Oppie in a 1980 TV miniseries.also called "Oppenheimer." I'll be interested to see Nolan's version and compare it to the 1980 series, which I rate very highly.
Fine. But who plays the funniest physicist involved in the Manhattan project? Richard P. Feynman.
I read that an actor named Jack Quaid is playing Feynman. Since the movie is of course called "Oppenheimer", I'm sure it's just not feasible time-wise or narrative-wise to devote much time to any one individual in the project aside from Oppie.
I'm sure they'll cover Feynman working for Bethe, leading the computation group for the explosive yield of the weapons. And I do hope they have room in the film for a bit of safecracking, and bongo playing, but who knows.
As for the rest, I think Feynman is interesting enough to devote a whole movie to - above and beyond that little film Infinity, as charming as it was. I'd like to see him on screen shouting down Bethe and Bohr (nothing personal) when he thinks they are wrong about a technical issue. Or reviewing the blueprints for the uranium refinement plant, asking what would happen if "this" valve gets stuck, or show him identifying and pointing out the dangerous problems with critical accumulation at Oak Ridge.
And we'd all like to see him after the war, developing his spacetime approach to quantum electrodynamics, solving the problem by inventing his diagrams. Then his work on superfluid helium, then later on hadron interactions, his on and off working relationship with Gell-Mann. Then toward the end of his life, the Challenger investigation. And that's just the technical stuff. There's his eccentric friends and other interests, his drawing, and Tuva. There is so much in the public record about him, that almost any decent screenwriter should be able to pen a fascinating screenplay about his life.
Very excited for this new history movie. WW2 movies have needed a major overhaul in the cinema dept. Hopefully Tibbets gets some screen time.
They don't show the dropping of the bombs on Japanese cities.

Sam Waterston was excellent as Oppenheimer in the BBC drama series around 1980.
The only other movie I know of that brings Oppenheimer to the big screen was Fat man little boy back in the 90s. One of my favorite movies.

Nolan is an observer of the outside of reality, why he's drawn to scientific themes, topics: he's a magician of science, not a scientist. He likes films that test your thought processes, not your inner feelings. He mounts up factoids upon factoids on the big screen, to amaze you with his delivery, using the best photographic lenses. He wants to create awe at the tools of film making.
The little known truth about the atomic bomb development in the US and later in the UK was that the scientists didn't actually know what would happen. Some thought the Trinity test would set the atmosphere on fire. In the later tests by the British their bomb resulted in a yield far beyond what was expected. They were literally testing theoretical calculations in real life with a weapon capable of ending life on earth and remember they did it without computers. No wonder Oppenheimer was profoundly affected by what he had done when he saw the final results of his creation.

The only thing comparable about these two is they're both movies. That's it. Different genres, issues, and film styles - cannot compare. It's like comparing apples and bananas, both fruits but different in many ways. But if I don't have enough money and can only watch one, I'll watch Oppenheimer.
Seen then film and and it's a beautifully made film. I was hooked till the end learning about the man and how he was till the end. amazing story telling

As a preparation for seeing this film, watch several episodes of "The Man in the High Castle." That shows what could have happened to the US if Nazi Germany had developed the atomic bomb first. During the Manhattan Project this was the fear that drove them all. TMITHC gives a taste of why they were justified in being fearful.

Fun fact: Since Nolan is not a big fan of CGI he will drop 2 actual bombs on Japan just to bring us a fully realistic experience!
Not for the first time. There has been TV series in this respect and a movie just doesn’t give enough credit to Opie’s story. There is much more to this man than just the bomb.

Oppenheimer's quote is taken out of context. The fuller quote is: "Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty, and to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says, 'Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.' I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.” Oppenheimer is not saying that he is become Death, he's saying that he was convinced to do his duty in the face of inevitable ultimate power of death/fate/time/Vishnu/nuclear power(?).

I really liked Fat Man and Liittle Boy with Paul Newman. I really hope I like this film. I am a bit worried, since I thought Nolan’s Dunkirk was a swing and a miss, probably because the legend outstripped reality (though Nolan blew it when he had civilians piloting their own watercraft…British navy sailors did that). I do love Nolan’s films. Fingers crossed.
He portrayed the Sundowner, a motor yacht owned by Charles Lightoller, former second officer of the Titanic, was requisitioned by the Admiralty on 30 May. Lightoller insisted that, if anyone was going to take her to Dunkirk, it would be him and his eldest son, Roger, together with Sea Scout Gerald Ashcroft. The men transported 127 soldiers back to Ramsgate, reportedly packed together like sardines, almost capsizing when they reached the shore. She is a museum ship at the Ramsgate Maritime Museum.

I hear you on Dunkirk .... very disappointing ... I also really liked the mini series Manhattan .... soooo i'm hopeful this one is good ... come on Nolan!

This story was shown on PBS YEARS ago with a very fine production. I believe Sam Waterston played in it . The actor that played General Leslie Groves also looked a lot more like the real McCoy then the lad playing him now. Check it out.
this lead actor looks too plastic or too much makeup and actor playing groves, a failure in casting. i'll stick to the BBC series with Sam Waterston . actress who played kitty Oppenheimer also looked like the real person

This is not the only movie about Oppenheimer. There was a seven part limited series staring Sam Waterston in the 1980s.
Man, i just watched the movie but i wish i did a bit more research before watching the movie. I was not familliar with dr Oppenheimer and now i can slap myself in the face that i went to see the movie without getting to know him. It didn’t even occur to me to do some research, i only could focus on the fact that i was so excited for the movie..😅
I already made a mistake not watching Interstellar at the theater. I'm not making the same mistake with Oppenheimer.
Wasn't the point of dropping the bombs that the Japanese WERE essentially defeated, but refused to surrender in lieu of fighting to the very end regardless of victory and costing scores of lives on both sides for no particular goal other than to be obstinate? I could be wrong, but this was always as I understood it.
The invasion of the Japanese islands was estimated to cost a million men considering the suicidal fighting nature of the Japanese at the time. Plus the US spent so much on the Manhattan Project that it was politically suicidal not to use it. Remember move Japanese died during the firing bombing of Tokyo than did in the two atomic bombs.
Germany had already surrendered by the time the bombs were dropped. Japan is a frickin' ISLAND, and it had no allies left. It wasn't capable of self-sufficiency, and the oil embargo had been so effective that, toward the end of the war, the best use of skilled pilots and their expensive planes was to kamakazi them into ships, because they didn't have the fuel to get home. The USA could have starved the Japanese into submission. But we do like our big, flashy displays. And we needed to send the message to the USSR that we had this weapon and weren't afraid to use it.
US has always justified all crap they have pulled so they can be the "heros". No wonder so much obsession on superhero movies in US
Japan wasn't defeated, a god Emperor can't be defeated, and they wanted to keep all of China etc that they still had.
The Japanese military leaders did not want to lose and personally be hanged. They were willing to squander a million lives.
I'm really looking forward on how good the music is gonna be in this movie.

It's because Oldman has played 2 of the roles of the big 3 from the Second World War now.. it seems right that he tackle the last one too
