  • I have a 1998 mk4 Golf and a problem with the back passenger door. It won't open. I need this sorted asap to be road legal but don't want to pay VW their ridiculous costs. How can I open it?

    2003 mk4 Golf.
Same problem! get this solved by pulling the inside handle (or pressing down the jump rod, not remember exactly ) and at the same time locking and unlocking the doors many many ... many times with the remote key.
This happened when I hadn't used the car for more than 3 months. So I think this problem is caused by certain high resistance in the mechanics somewhere in the door lock.
Locking and unlocking the doors may help the mechanics to overcome the resistance.

I just got my rear driver's side door open now.. First thing to do... turn the key in the driver's (front) door while listening by the rear door handle to see if you can hear the actuator triggering... If you dont hear it, then hit the door a few belts near the lock module until you hear it moving... If you do hear it, keep unlocking and locking while pulling the inner door handle...
I love my Golf but I hate my Golf's door locks..

in this situation you can open the door easy. Just pull the handle to open the door inside the car and keep it pulled, then lock the car and unlock. Then pull the handle one more time and doors is open :)
Problem is in door lock it can be in electrical part of the lock as poor soldering problem, you can easy find how to solve this problem in internet, microswiches can be a problem too. I have problem with lock too, but my problem was with mechanical parts movement problem, maybe I will do explanation later how I've solve it. Anyway, replacing the door lock will solve the problem.

I managed to open my jammed lock like this:
Stand outside next to the door and hit it just below the handle where the lock mechanism is repeatedly while repeatedly pressing the unlock key on your remote.
    Hope this information helps someone.

Hey, well it now opens and it passed the MOT test! I took the car to my father in law who's a locksmith. He made a thin metal tool to slide down the window on the outside of the car and somehow managed to unlock the door. It is a central locking fault because the door won't lock now with the central locking. Only way I can lock that door now is to push the pin down and use the inner handle to open it again. Also the opening mechanism itself was in need of oiling or lubing.

August 2015. no one seems to be addressing the problem of actually opening a deadlocked door when all the banging solutions have been tried. i.e breaking/ cutting. I had the prob on my last golf & vibrated the door till it luckily undeadlocked. I then disconnected the module so that the central locking on that door did not work I.e. always manually locked the door. I did dismantle the module completely to see the principle of operation. No soldering issues. I concluded that unless the motor actuated no amount of lever pulling worked.
Once again my other golf mk 4 passenger door has deadlocked & no amount of vibration will sort it. I used a hammer drill las time, feel like scrapping my otherwise trusty motor. Final tip, as soon as you suspect a problem- disconnect the door harness or disable central locking until you are ready to actually change or repair the module. Lots of videos on this.

To easily reposition the lock cable in the door handle, first remove the lock by losening the retaining bolt inside the side of the door. This will allow the lock module to come out. Once out grab some needle nose pliers, use it to grab the cable to stop it going inside the door, take the black bit out of its position, reposition it and let go of the cable. Repeat until the door works correctly. Replace the lock and tighten the retaining bolt.

Hey, you can hold the pin up when it comes up and the pull the handle again... if it doesn't work the first time just persist!.. and the central locking is usually the wires from the door to where it goes across into the car!!! in that rubber boot thing! the wires get brittle and break after years of use!

I had the same problem, same door, same issue, EXACTLY!!! What I did after lots of research and ready online. I disconnected the battery.
    1. Disconnected the battery and left for about 15 to 20 mins.
    2. Reconnected and had the darling wife sit in the drivers seat and operate the driver's door remote lock/unlock switch.
    3. Keep switching to lock/unlock every second while I stood outside of deadlocked door and banged along the right of the door handle in the area of the deadlock. Just using the bottom of my cliched fist. A very firm continuous thumps and Walla!!
Door pin popped up. And has continued to work from Monday this week.
    4. Once opened I continuously kept doing the lock unlocking for another minute and its been fine since. Applied some WD40 in the lock area.
This has saved me a lot of money, but may still get the lock module changed regardless. Mot due next week.!!! :D
    Good luck all.

    I had this problem too!
I found an easy way to open the door.
Firstly make sure the rest of the car is unlocked via the central locking.
Then go to the outside of the locked door.
Now it's a case of giving the door a hard and firm hit (with your hand) from the outside - you should hit the door where the locking mechanism is situated (so just to the right of the handle) and pull the handle at the same time (just a moment after you give the door a shove).
This should free up the problematic lock module and your door will pop open.
Remember if you shut the door again you could have the same problem - once you get it open, it's best to think about fixing the fault.
Once the door is open you can either take the door apart and get a replacement lock module (quite fiddly, but easily replaced in 2-3 hours). Alternatively you can just get a new door from the scrapyard and fit that - a lot less fiddly but more expensive.
I had to do this six months ago, otherwise my car would fail the MOT - it's all sorted now and my car is still on the road!
    Hope this helps.

The tool was just a thin steel strip. About 70 cm long and only an inch wide. Few mm thick so was quite flexible. He just cut out a small piece near the bottom to act as a hook. I'm no locksmith nor a car thief so couldn't tell you how it worked. Just slid it down the glass and hooked onto something and voila, open door. Thing is, now after about 6 weeks its gone back to how it was because the door randomly worked one time on the fob and locked again, now won't open.

The deadlock mechanism is broken. Needs a new lock. I have the Same with my VAG seat Leon with two doors. Costly repair but needed for mot. I would remove the fuse for the central locking if you can't repair it straight away. This stops the lock from ceasing up completely and not being able to open the door at all.

I wish I read Southendathome's comment b4 I underwent the trauma of ripping my lock out. He makes the very useful suggestion of vibrating that part of the door where the lock is with a hammer-drill on a biscuit-tin lid on a larger bit of cloth to protect the body-work. This might have fixed my problem but alas I will never know unless it happens again.

    Right il try my best
open the door and cround down so you are level and facing the black latch you will notice afew things a big circle plastic cap half way down this is for the window runner, the door latch/mechanism now just left of that you will see black trimming going all the way up but youl notice one bit is odd it bobbles out pull it open and you will see a gold allen key type screw undo that step by step while lightly pulling on the look barrel of the handel til it pops out

  • @GizOfWar
    @GizOfWar 12 ปีที่แล้ว

This should fix ::: pull the outside handel and ull see between the gap a little black clip what you need to do is to wiggle that free so it goes back into the door so its free again and the outside door will do nothing after this as it will be disconnected but this should stop the pin from jumping up and down and allow the inside handle to open the door and then once you done that reconnecting it is easy peasy just ask

I had same problem in my passat b5, but i fixed.
To solve you need to do 4 things:
    1. Dismounting the door inside (easy, find in youtube) !No need to take out seat!
    2. Find the door lock
    3. Cut with a saw the plastic cover of the electric lock and rotate the gears from the inside until unlock the door and then just pull the handle.
    4. Buy new electric lock and change the old.
    Hope this helps!

I had the same thing happen yesterday to the passenger side door. I removed the bottom Torx screws from inside and was able to pry off the door panel. My Golf is a Brazilian made MK IV that is entirely manual, so I think your problem is with the unlock likage. I studied mine, found nothing wrong and reassembled and now it works. I suspect the opening wire somehow gets misaligned and with some fiddling, it can be restored. Good luck.

It is not related to child lock. The child lock safety on all VW´s I know are only accessible when the doors are opened. Also the child lock safety is only on the back doors. The exact same issue also appears on front doors where is no child lock safety mechanism. Also the doors do not open from the outside either. In case of child lock on, it would still open from the outside which is an easy workaround if the doors don´t open from the inside.

No, unfortunately the locksmith method (metal strip and hook down the window method) was only temporary. It's now reverted to being permanently locked. I will have to have this sorted before the next MOT so will upload a video of how then. (at the moment its not very important to me lol).

Hi .. i am having the same exact problem on my passat 1998 ... i just wonder if you can provide us a small drawing of the metal strip that you used to solve it, and where do you fit that in the windows ... i would really appreciate it if you can do it ...

The lock is now in pieces on my garage floor and by reconstructing it to see what went wrong with it the lock started to work.
I can only assume that the plastic threaded rod or one of the other plastic levers etc had become detached or seized and the lock failed to locking position.
It took two of us about four hours to get it removed by trying not to damage anything but the only way to get it unlocked was to split the part of the lock that houses the solenid to allow these parts to fall away

I know there is torx screws at the bottom of the door but you can actually reach to them even though the door is closed. If you stick you finger at the bottom of the door panel and try to feel where the screws are ( look at the other door so you have a reference) . When you have located the screws use your torx screwdriver and unscrew. Then remove the two screws in the door handle and undo the clips around the door. From there you can unhook the wire and hopefully you can figure out the rest.
