This wasn’t really a call for independence. Although Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s speech had a huge influence on the people of Bangladesh, his true nature became clear after the liberation war. What everyone saw was that his actions were more for his own benefit than for the country. During the war itself, he didn’t contribute much, he was in jail the whole time. In the end, he became Bangladesh’s first dictator and not a good one. He oppressed the people instead of serving them. His cult of personality needs to end!

One important thing - he didn't declare independence, rather, continued dialogues with Yahya and Bhutto in Dhaka, while Pakistan army junta were brought in numbers from the west to east, even after this speech. Later, when he was asked to sign on the declaration of independence, he declined and said he didn't want to tear apart Pakistan. In this speech, he concluded by saying that, ”joy bangla, joy Pakistan, joy punjab, joy Sindh, joy Balochistan!”
