Wading Through The Syrup was unfortunate (too formulated) though I agree that God Fodder is one of a kind to me. Can't think of any other popular music,,,Rush doesn't count because the exceptionalality of the rest, Pert in particular.. My stuff hass bass upfront.
Ned's, Mega City Four, Pop Will Eat Itself formed this weird little British musical subculture called "grebo", which kind of sounds like punk-pop bands like All, and pre-NIN electronic industrial bands like Nitzer Ebb and ravier bands like Happy Mondays or EMF. Music was so good in the late 80s/early 90s before grunge took over.
Also, after listening to this again for the first time in DECADES, not hard to imagine that the Killers took a lot of their cues from grebo bands like NAD and Jesus Jones.
Yes! Sound of my youth in early 90s UK, along with shoegaze. Kind of same time as grunge in US I thought, then Britpop came along and a lot of these interesting UK bands/scenes got swept aside
@@lunatic_magnet it can't be that long. I remember them at the Aragon in the early 2010s for some reunion tour. I can't be imagining this. If I am, then things are...not good 😫
If you ever return to Ned's, check out something from their second album Are You Normal? like "Intact" or "Legoland". That's where they really figure out how to use the double bass + guitar setup with interlocking melodies, plus Dan's drumming takes another leap forward.
I'd second that, but I'd suggest either going with either the better known Intact or the highly overlooked Titch., cos they both have much more prominent bass from Alex. The versions from the sessions album are probably the best cos Ned's always shine best live. I really hope there's a follow up, video on Ned's, cos they don't get the credit they deserve. Also worth noting that Alex and Rat sometimes use a capo.
@@midiahn Great track, but very guitar focused with the bass dropping out a few times. It would be great if the albums could all be remastered at some point to give a bit more space in the mixes, like the session tracks have.
The joy in that music is profound, it still gets me today, I've always hurt about the fact we grow old and die, this tune is so electric and youthful, a couple of years ago i started listening to all these bands again and remembering the excitement in the music from the 80s and 90s growing up, excellent, nice video coverage too
When I saw Ned's in '92, the melody bassist was only playing Rickenbachers and the rhythm bassist was only playing Stingrays. They also had amazing merch. That being said, to me, their sound came out of the Stone Roses and Pop Will Eat Itself in the late 80's. Those two bands seemed to give birth to Ned's, EMF, the Happy Mondays, and Blur right there at the start of the 90's. If you would like to check out a completey different side of Ned's, give a listen to "Premonition" which is my favorite song from them.
I’m eating to call it fraggle but I could be wrong. Indie noise pop. You’d got Shoegaze in Oxford and Madchester in Manchester. Grunge hadn’t happened over here yet and it kinda killed the noise pop groovers when it arrived.
@@Si_G I just lump those bands under "UK indie rock", together with everything from the Weddos to CUD to whichever other bands I can't remember now (because it was a lifetime ago). Musically I think Ned's actually do fit under grunge, just not the commercial hard-rock rehash "grunge" (Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and their ilk) -- more like the smaller bands you'd hear on the Sub Pop 200 comp.
Look up the band Dianogah and their song "what is your land mass". They have 2 bass players and no guitar. And thanks for doing Ned's Atomic Dustbin, they have so many great songs.
Thanks again for the awesome reaction. I had never heard of this band prior to seeing your reaction and am now a fan of the band and will definitely be checking out their discog this weekend.
You should definitely do "Happy" off the same album. "Happy" is the song that heavily influenced/inspired Mark Hoppus' (blink-182) amazing bass intro to the song "Carousel".
Dude finally you got to NED'S!! I fell in love with them the first time i heard them ( it was this song actually ) seriously..check them out... try "Happy" or "Faceless" next ! i"ll never understand how they never got real big.. they were absolutely phenomenal. Now they play very few and far between only in England though :( ... ORGANIC ... perfect word man... nailed it
Your observation that the high vs low bass lines let's the lead choose where to play is really evident in Spring (Are You Normal). Thanks for the deep dive! Reminded me of my love... And I've ended up getting a handful of 'the youth' listening to them for the first time as a result. One guy basically runs Ned's playlist on Spotify every night at the pub, now. The app chooses a ton of Merge Records alongside (which makes sense).
Been following them around the UK since the early 90’s and saw them a few weeks ago in their home town. Still sound as good today as they did then. The only band that makes me feel 17 again. Amazing
I’ve not listened to this song for decades but I still remember all the lyrics . I try not to look back as it’s so sad to remember days gone for good & never coming back.
Saw Ned's open for Jesus Jones at the Warfield in San Francisco. One of the best shows and I still have the t shirt. "Not Sleeping Around" and "Kill Your Television", of course "Happy" and this song never get old. There is a great acoustic version if you do some looking. Thanks for putting this out there!
Cop Shoot Cop were another great two-bass band. Their album White Noise is one of my all-time favorites. Dark, noisy, and pissed off - just how I like it. 😸
Great reaction, love this band! If you want another good one from these guys, I recommend Killing Your Television from the same album; the bass parts are a lot more present in that one. Great stuff!
Been a huge fan of them since 92....these guys opened up the alternative rock world for me and cant thank them enough for the unique sounds they created. Amazing lads to date!!!!!
Saw these guys with Sunny Day Real Estate @ the Moore Theater during their Are you Normal tour. I was lucky too, they canceled the Portland OR show due to sickness. Seattle was the next stop and such an awesome show.
There was so much really cool music spraying out at this time. I was working in retail music back then. NAD, NiN, Stone Roses, Teenage Fanclub, Soul Asylum. I saw My earliest No Doubt show back then, they were opening for Ziggy Marley.
Saw No Doubt about the same time at a festival in DC. Someone bounced a water bottle off of Gwen’s head from the audience (accidentally I assume). She barely missed a beat and kept going like nothing happened.
Listen to “Happy” off the same album…you get a much better example of what they can do. The two basses are more distinct as the melody bass carries the song with a more distinct line. Fun band.
The Ned's were a great band and part of my youth, discovered them when I was 18 and saw them several times from the grimy Bristol Bierkeller right up to 2nd headliners at the Reading Festival. They did also appear on Top of the Pops in the UK playing Happy (with one of them rocking a Husker Du t-shirt), so they did achieve some success for a brief period (pre-Britpop). God Fodder is a rawer sound than the next album. Kill Your Television, Selfish, Happy, Cut Up, Throwing Things, hell the whole album is great for showing off the dual bass sound. Unique band from a great era of music. I would thoroughly recommend listening to the whole album!!
I bought this album in 92 after hearing this track on a skateboarding video... I always dug the production quality of it too. They also had a cover of Saturday Night on the soundtrack to So... I Married An Axe Murderer.
Seen Neds a lot over they years, most recently about a month ago. They still sound great and still have this much energy as they did in the 90s. Please listen to tracks like Happy, Titch and anything off the Are You Normal album. Blink 182 are clearly fans too you can hear Alexs influence throughout their music.
Any time I see someone doing a 'Grey Cell Green' reaction video, I watch it. It remains one of the great songs of the 1990s and it's a sin this band didn't become bigger.
Sadly, There’s only 2 vids on this vid in TH-cam. 90s had great music. Nobody cares now. They only want 10 second dancy samples to dance to on TikTok, no more uplifting songs like this. Haven’t heard one like this in 10pm years. So sad.
anybody who is cleaning their apartment and NOT going to listen to this while doing so will be at it twice as long. I love how energetic these guys were.. the whole album keeps up the pace, even at half-time - there's a punch and a moving franticness... I LOVE THEM!... in the era when every band needed a lead-guitar and a pointless 'solo' halfway through, these guys had 'lead bass' and a guitar filling out the mids with less emphasis on himself than the whole sound. So much ahead of their time.
Actually, the band Girls Against Boys also use 2 bass players. Like Ned, GVSB were using 2 bass players when forming in late 80's! So, did the metal band Damageplan that featured the late Dimebag Darrell. I've been a fan of Ned's Atomic Dustbin since rhe begin when I first heard them back in the late 1980's/early 1990's! I just turned 52 and they are still one of my favorite bands to this day! 😊
As a couple others have pointed out, the high bass is indeed a Rick 4003, but he swapped the bridge pickup for what looks like some sort of jazz bass pickup and ditched the chrome pickup cover. Always played in standard tuning as far as I know, but he used a capo on several songs so he could drone open strings under the melody but not just be stuck playing in the keys of A and D. In the earliest of early days, I think he was playing a Gibson Ripper but he switched to the Rick by the time this album was released. And the low bass is indeed a Stingray, also played in standard.
ArnoCorps has two bass players. One bass player plays a Tenor tuned bass with a high C string. Their high bass is pretty prominent and used as a lead and harmony. I haven’t come across another two bass band that does it like ArnoCorps. They refer to their two bass two guitar configuration as Heroic Symmetry!
You should check out Pinback's Fortress. In most of Pinback's songs Rob Crow plays guitar, but for Fortress, and I think a few other songs, he plays bass while Zach Smith still plays bass in his lead sort of way, resulting in 2 basses, 0 guitars, 2 singers, and drums!
Nice! I still love Ned's to this day! Have you ever checked out Galactic Cowboys? 90's band that sounds like a mash-up of early Metallica and the Beatles, especially in the vocal harmonies. Check out the song "You Make Me Smile", Monty Colvin's bass tone is incredible on this song! They used to tour with King's X a lot in the 90's so you would get a full night of amazing bi-amped bass tone from both bands. Love your channel man!
Absolutely love that you did a reaction to this, I'm from Stourbridge and these guys are my dad's mates, this was always my favourite of theirs, even though Kill Your Television seemed to be their big song Very happy to see a bass-themed reaction channel, you should look at "You're The Inspiration" by Chicago and "You Get What You Give" by New Radicals, both songs that could have coasted and yet have phenomenal bass lines!
It's almost as if one bass follows the drums, and the other is a lead right along with the guitar and vocals. Doing it that way opens up a ton of options if you can pull it off successfully. I'm going to have to check out more of their stuff because up until now I've never heard of them before. They sound pretty close to a good chunk of the other stuff I would have been listening to back then for sure.
One of my favourite bands ever. Saw them at the Villa (spit!) Centre back in 1990/91 time, and again in Stourbridge around 2008. At the first gig I broke four ribs and had bruises all over for weeks after. Absolutely insane gigs and a fantastic band live. Love them so much.
Yes! I have been waiting for this episode. You need to check out more bass heavy song from these guys, they have some really great and enjoyable songs. Another 2 bass song suggestion that has a weird cult following thanks to the tumblr era; Loro by Pinback. Maybe a little repetitive, but it’s beautiful.
Ned's Atomic Dustbin are legends! I was blessed to see them in a small pub in Yorkshire in 2005 (I also saw them in the 90's) and both eras, they were amazing live. Great band!
Feel blessed that I got to see them at The Academy, NYC (now torn down). They were opening for Jesus Jones. A younger fan alerted me " watch out, these guys are awesome. They may upstage the headliners. Although that never happened, I still went and got all of Ned's albums...my fave being Are You Normal cuz it really showed off the bass chops.
I wasn't a skate punk, despite my name. They were played on 120 Minutes, and that's where I discovered a ton of great music. Ned's really charmed me since I am a bassist (and guitarist). I should have gone and seen them live but the early 90s were a wasteland for me without a car or a license and living in a village outside of a major town. But I could get the music!
FYI Neds were higher on the bill then Nirvana at the 1991 Reading Festival. That was just before Nevermind was released.... That was a fun weekend! EDIT: Neds got a lot of stick for basically being a silly indie rock band for students, but they were very clever with what they did. All lovely guys too, apparently, and had an insanely loyal following.
Along with British acts you should try Ian Dury and the Blockheads they are a legendary band in the uk , Ian Dury is a poet / vocalist who passed away to soon ,but the Blockheads still continue to this day, they are an amazing band more alternative than punk ,I would like to recommend you “Hit Me With Your rhythm stick “ the bass playing on this song is next level, this will fit well with your recent punk explosion…..love what you do
Reluctantly bought the cd after seeing it advertised in Thrasher. I was into hardcore at the time but man I loved this record. It has a mystique that has stood the test of time. Really good melodies & incredibly interesting arrangements & yes - dream-like production & layering. I grew up at an amazing time for music, toys, movies, clothes, skateboarding & much more.
The first time I heard them was on a vhs copy of a skateboard video. I can't remember which skater it was now, but I still remember the whole sequence he did. They became one of my fave bands. Then my daughter got ahold of my old cd now they are her favorite as well😅
I was 21-22 when godfodder came out, being a joy division, echo and the bunnnymen etc... fan i really dug them and this album as a whole is great. Throwing things is another absolutely great song.
Yes dude thanks for checking on the NEDS. "Kill your Televison" and "walking through syrup" is another great song that showcases the double basses. Their production is part of the problem--its a bit thin

Very happy to see a bass-themed reaction channel, you should look at "You're The Inspiration" by Chicago and "You Get What You Give" by New Radicals, both songs that could have coasted and yet have phenomenal bass lines!
And, I appreciate you watching! Great suggestions, and I hope to see you around!

A friend played this for me the year it came out, I bouht the tape that week! One of the great rock albums of the 90s and in the history of the genre.
Hearing this song takes me back to Fall of 91.
Always loved this from mtv and the early 90’s
I told you they were good Mark...that entire album should be on every bass players playlist
Ned's Atomic Dustbin are legends! I was blessed to see them in a small pub in Yorkshire in 2005 (I also saw them in the 90's) and both eras, they were amazing live. Great band!
Found these guys through the Plan B skate video “Questionable” when I was 13. Rick Howard used this song for his part, was hooked since!
Underrated band. I wish I saw them in their heyday. 50 year old here. I keep going back to their records. Great songs!
Early 90s American skate punks love Neds. Virtually unknown here otherwise.
Criminal.
Girls Against Boys (GVSB) was another great band that used 2 bassists at times.
Second vote for GVsB, fantastic band!
Along with British acts you should try Ian Dury and the Blockheads they are a legendary band in the uk , Ian Dury is a poet / vocalist who passed away to soon ,but the Blockheads still continue to this day, they are an amazing band more alternative than punk ,I would like to recommend you “Hit Me With Your rhythm stick “ the bass playing on this song is next level, this will fit well with your recent punk explosion…..love what you do
Grew up listening to Ian Dury, his lyrics tell the most amazing and funny stories of Britain at that time, and his band were top notch.
Ooof here is a band name I have not heard in a long time. Love them but honestly forgot about them for a while!
The entire album God Fodder is so solid. This album had big word of mouth to its success.
Neds Fan from México..first heard them back 1991
Finally!!! Ned's Atomic Dustbin! Been a fan since ever. My God Fodder CD is still in heavy rotation. Please check out Kill Your Television next. 🫡
What a fun chord progression!
Well I just got zapped back into my college days. Loved this whole album. Only one guy in the dorm was into them as well.
Neds and a band named new fast automatic daffodils, were the best indie bands of the 90s in my opinion
Loved these guys as a teenager.
Great analysis.
Never heard that song, that I know of, but I like it. Nice job.
"First time." You young, dawg
Reluctantly bought the cd after seeing it advertised in Thrasher. I was into hardcore at the time but man I loved this record. It has a mystique that has stood the test of time. Really good melodies & incredibly interesting arrangements & yes - dream-like production & layering. I grew up at an amazing time for music, toys, movies, clothes, skateboarding & much more.
Neds is one of those bands I always bring up when talking about 90s bands and 99.99% of the time folks say holy shit I totally forgot about them.
The first time I heard them was on a vhs copy of a skateboard video.
I can't remember which skater it was now, but I still remember the whole sequence he did.
They became one of my fave bands. Then my daughter got ahold of my old cd now they are her favorite as well😅
Love this band!
