This album made them my favorite band and they’ve maintained that position despite the fact that I haven’t loved their last 3 albums. Art of Drowning is great. Black Sails is great. But Sing the Sorrow is flawless.
you need to listen to The Art of Drowning (2000) its the perfect blend between their previous more punk-hardcore punk albums and the next more emo scene albums and sound and its their best also
Was never into AFI - I’m still not - but this album from front to back is incredible and better than what the majority of my favorite bands have ever been able to put out
Didn't think I'd ever see a full review of this album! Time to bring out the pop corn and reminisce about the 20 years of sorrow show I attended last year. It was insane seeing this album being played in it's entirety.
There's a lot to unpack with this album. This was their major label debut, as their 5 albums before it were in an Indy label. This was also a pretty drastic change to their sound and Davey's singing style. Something to understand about AFI is that they don't stay in one genre, the catalog has so many different styles and has something for everyone. They are my favorite band and have been since 96.
Managed to see them live this past summer - been a fan since 2006. They're a great live band, lots of energy. A lot of the fans I come across tend to only like certain eras or albums, but I find I enjoy all their stuff. With the range of sounds they've pursued, there's an AFI song for almost every occasion. (Also been enjoying Davey and Jade's Blaqk Audio electronica project as well.)
They are my fave band ever. I tend to listen to way heavier stuff, metalcore kinda lines, but no one beats these guys. It was their MTV concert back in the day that got me.
I think this is probably the best choice you could have made, but AFI is such an interesting band... They've reinvented themselves so many different times. If you go further back in their catalog you're going to hear like skate punk kind of music and then go later on you get more post rock kind of music and they've kind of done everything in between, but they started out in the punk and hardcore scene.
Nah bro afi is the shit I love the hardcore sound cant beat it they literally have like eight hardcore albums.there newer albums may not be hardcore anymore but it doesn't change the fact that they put out some goat hardcore shit. but we can't be mad at them for not wanting to do the same f****** thing every other year for 30 years. Does have a very distinct voice but I actually love it
I mean honestly this album was a pretty big departure from their previous era Not complaining Because this album fucks But it’s a good bit different to what they had released before And in truth this is probably their 3rd complete stylistic era. It’s at the very very least their 2nd. In my humble opinion, Black Sails/All Hallows EP is AFI at its best, most fun and most enjoyable. But good reaction, dude. Much appreciated. And you’ve gained a new follower.
@@nojusticeanywhere I haven’t. I think decemberunderground was the last of their albums I’ve listen to in depth. I’ll check it out, and thanks for the recommendation!
Ya gotta remember they were a pretty nasty punk band before this transformation. They always slapped hard. This album definitely brings me back. I was absolutely an emo kid (still am sometimes 😂). Who f*vied with the heaviest of metals to the darkest of industrial to the saddest of the emo. Throw some ska, punk and alternative in there and you never know where my playlists will go. 😂 Glad ya gave it a listen!
Fun fact about the leaving song part 2 music video is that they were going incredibly hard moshing in the video to point that the lead vocalist of the band suicide silence mitch lucker (RIP) got knocked out during the filming of the video
The days of the phoenix is their best song and you can really hear that 90s punk influence. This emo stuff they made after is pretty shit in comparison
If you are looking for a certain style of theirs to listen to: Answer That and Stay Fashionable - Skate punk Very Proud of ya - Skate punk Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes - Melodic hardcore Black Sails in the Sunset - Goth/horror punk The Art of Drowning - horror punk Sing The Sorrow - Goth/"emo" December Underground - Goth/"emo" Crash Love - post hardcore Burials - Goth Self Titled "the blood album" - post hardcore Bodies - post hardcore (more along the lines of Joy Division and others from the 80's)
I hate to say it, but I think this was the moment they were kind of "scene" band. I really enjoyed this record much more than the one after. I know what you mean by "scene" and looking back it was influenced by so many more things that weren't aesthetically punk, and went into things like industrial, post rock, and went further than just music. Though I hated it at the time, it certainly was a cultural movement of alternative culture that including youth, and early internet culture, and visual culture that included anime, comics, and gothic art. Listening to it again in this video it reminded me of the slivers of sounds on records passed that definitely make their way into how they developed into this iteration of AFI. If you're gonna do more with this band, and keep within the aesthetics of Punk/hardcore. I would suggest Black Sails In The Sunset, Art of Drowning, and Burials.
Nah afi grew up east bay hardcore díff not emo maybe his look opened the door for a more extreme look. But I don't feel feel like the email I feel like they get group in with the emo scean just because they came out around the same time
If you want some aggression go back to older albums. My favorites art of drowning and black sails, but anything before sing the sorrow, I think you like. I like everything after that too but think you shouod look at older stuff first Liked the review man, good work
helll no AFI sing the sorrow B side which didnt even come out mainstream is amazing and their best content. i seriously suggest listening to the following songs: - synethesia - rabbits are road kill on route 37 th-cam.com/play/PLsXkVCxCkQd_YXaOdaj3qlQxivIDPt0Xr.html
Interesting to hear you say that the album sounds raw. Back when it was released a lot of complaints on the AFI message boards was that this album was TOO POLISHED. Of course, if you compare it to their previous releases, it is
The Warriors - War is Hell (redux) Cold World - No Omega One Dead Three Wounded - Paint the Town If you want some lesser known bands that have some unique sounds. People might dig you reacting some lesser known music that you might dig.
I tried. Many times. Just can’t do it. I know how you feel when someone says they like afi. It’s the same feeling you get when a man tells you he has a hyphenated last name.
This album made them my favorite band and they’ve maintained that position despite the fact that I haven’t loved their last 3 albums. Art of Drowning is great. Black Sails is great. But Sing the Sorrow is flawless.

Very cool. This album is a masterpiece. And now you know that :)
Nice vid. Subscribed.
2nd song and dude smiling ear to ear I love it
Davey Havok is about old enough to be the members of MCR's father lmao, AFI has been around since '91.
Well he was in the grade below me in high school and i'm 51 now.
As much as I don't care about what they did after 2003, their HC and punk eras were glorious. Sing the sorrow is a masterpiece too.
I like their non-single tracks and their single tracks. I have mixed feelings about.
-Every AFI fan ever
Art of Drowning. Peak AFI. A must listen that will provide the missing aggression.
Great choice! They have a deep catalogue all worth checking out. Black Sails in the Sunset is a fav of mine
Peak is Black Sails/All Hallows EP imo. Art of Drowning was great as well, but the first two were a fair bit better
Agreed
If you want that hardcore their early stuff would be the place to start.

You wanna get a sense of why AFI "blows people away" as you say, check out the album Black Sails In The Sunset. You'll get it then.
This.
Either best or 2nd best for sure. Live shows peaked in this era tho 100%
AFI walked so My Chemical Romance could run
Dumbest Comment of the 2020s
This came out before dumbass chemical romance
To me I feel like this album was the precursor to "scene" at least in my area. When I think of scene I think 2006-2009ish
They are my fave band ever. I tend to listen to way heavier stuff, metalcore kinda lines, but no one beats these guys. It was their MTV concert back in the day that got me.

Honestly, just hearing album for the first time it's an experience. Best of the best 👌

Kínda weird saying MCR is heavier then afi
In some aspects they can be but overall AFI have several more heavier songs than them
Yeah, sick, you should definitely check out AND PLEASE do a review on the Art Of Drowning album
Dude, you missed two songs at the end! They're not even bonus tracks, they're legit songs that COMPLETE the album.
This is one of their biggest albums but their best album is Black Sails in the Sunset. Give that one a listen.
this is a classic. id be realy curious to hear what you think of their earlier stuff such as "very proud of ya" thats just some great hardcore
Art of Drowning is also fire.
You should do a video where you check out a couple very early songs and a couple new ones. You’d be thrown off my the massive shifts in their sound.
AFI was a punk band and way better than any metal goth shit
I mean honestly this album was a pretty big departure from their previous era
Not complaining
Because this album fucks
But it’s a good bit different to what they had released before
And in truth this is probably their 3rd complete stylistic era.
It’s at the very very least their 2nd.

I agree with all of this, Have you heard Burials? It's a bit of a treat, and maybe more punk/less goth than sing the sorrow
@@nojusticeanywhere I haven’t. I think decemberunderground was the last of their albums I’ve listen to in depth. I’ll check it out, and thanks for the recommendation!

Black Sails in the Sunset is hands down their best album. You really should react to it.
SHUT YOUR MOUTH IS ALWAYS #1
Fun fact about the leaving song part 2 music video is that they were going incredibly hard moshing in the video to point that the lead vocalist of the band suicide silence mitch lucker (RIP) got knocked out during the filming of the video
Cool t shirt. Where’s it from?
Please do +44 When your heart stops beating (blink-182 side project, Mark Hoppus & Trav Barker)
Man you should also check Decemberunderground album. It was by far their most popular album. Released after sing of sorrow in 2006.
Butch Vig produced this album.
Check out the songs "I wanna get a mohawk" and "High school football hero" from their first album. So good.
A Fire Inside!!!
Will you pleaseeee do Senses Fail - let it enfold you album!!
The days of the phoenix is their best song and you can really hear that 90s punk influence. This emo stuff they made after is pretty shit in comparison
If you are looking for a certain style of theirs to listen to:
Answer That and Stay Fashionable - Skate punk
Very Proud of ya - Skate punk
Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes - Melodic hardcore
Black Sails in the Sunset - Goth/horror punk
The Art of Drowning - horror punk
Sing The Sorrow - Goth/"emo"
December Underground - Goth/"emo"
Crash Love - post hardcore
Burials - Goth
Self Titled "the blood album" - post hardcore
Bodies - post hardcore (more along the lines of Joy Division and others from the 80's)
I thought the genre of post hardcore was early 2010s warp tour bands, kind of like metalcore but with a bit more catchy pop style choruses
@@King_of_Sofa It was, but AFI's crash love came out around that time. Their newer stuff sounds alot like it as well, but with a more 80's feel to it.
Black Sails in the Sunset is unequivocally their best album.
I hate to say it, but I think this was the moment they were kind of "scene" band. I really enjoyed this record much more than the one after.

you should watch "New Years Watch-Party: Nirvana [Kurt Cam]- 1993-12-13 - Seattle, WA - [Kurt Solo Cam/OpenMic Audio]"
Their love like winter album is more on the poppy side, but it’s still a really good album
So you mean DecemberUnderground?
lol i just realized if RANTZ read every comment we wouldnt see from him till 2040 for every "listen to this".
which i am guilty of as well.
Their earlier albums were heaps better
helll no AFI sing the sorrow B side which didnt even come out mainstream is amazing and their best content. i seriously suggest listening to the following songs:

SCENE. lol bro this guy lets the music roll ove it. get some Black Sails in Ya
I dig that Ito shirt 👍
I agree about what you sad about AFI difference against FOB, MCR
Interesting to hear you say that the album sounds raw. Back when it was released a lot of complaints on the AFI message boards was that this album was TOO POLISHED. Of course, if you compare it to their previous releases, it is

their heaviest album is 'shut your mouth and open your eyes'. their explosive album is 'decemberunderground'. which is also their scene queen album.
You should react to Avenged Sevenfold - nightmare or The used - self titled
First 4 albums or bust EBHC. This shit can go away forever for us real fans who grew up with AFI
I tried. Many times. Just can’t do it. I know how you feel when someone says they like afi. It’s the same feeling you get when a man tells you he has a hyphenated last name.
