    I know we’ve never met Marianne and we probably never will but I’m so proud of you for doing this so publicly on this channel it’s hard enough to learn a new skill and to do it with a camera pointed at you is a brave thing well done you!😊😊

    As a professional seaman and a powerboat instructor and yacht master it’s so good to see finally someone saying how important it is to have training to go on the water. Too many people buy cheap boats and go out and cause chaos! Great video! “Steer before gear” 😉

    • @tonyhale2041

      It’s incomprehensible to me that someone would even think about operating a boat without training, seems far more complicated than driving a car, and you wouldn’t be allowed to drive a car without a licence.

    • @JCBelfat
      @JCBelfat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The best way it was described to me was "think - steer - gear"

    • @PhilbyFavourites
      @PhilbyFavourites 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      “Steer before gear” is my mantra too.
      One useful reminder is “it’s not a car”. That reinforces the message that it doesn’t have four wheels to grip the road and no handbrake or foot brake. It’s so easy to see a throttle and a wheel and “assume” that it will react the same way.
      Even if you’re sat alongside someone truly you won’t pick it up without time on the wheel as the sensation of how the vessel reacts to “your - helms” input can only be felt from actually driving.
      Great work from the instructor. It must be warmer in the south west than in the Solent. I’m dressed up like a spaceman in sub zero windchill at present. Roll on warmer days.

    As a seafarer (firmly ashore these days though) it’s fantastic to see a channel like this promote good training. It’s so dangerous to put out to sea without any yet many do each year costing millions in rescue resources.
    ...I hadn’t realised how triggered I was by people saying reverse in a boat though. 🤦🏻‍♂️😂😂

    (Marianne raises eyebrows)
    Here are the parts of the boat.
    (Marianne raises eyebrows)
    Now gently manoeuvre to the dock
    (Marianne raises eyebrows)
    I’m glad no one created a drinking game based on this fun and happy video. We’d all be sloshed!
    Marianne is one cool cat; total grace under pressure. Rock on!
    Hey y’all should (once restrictions are eased) do a journey on all the canals here in Belgium. Or do a trip down the Mosel in France/Germany. Make it happen, Cap’n Marianne!!!

    Learning to drive a single screw or single outboard boat is a good way to learn. Then you get in a twin screw boat and realise how much easier it is to manoeuvre when you have 2 engines to play with. Good on you Marianne!

    Nice video. The main difference between driving a car and a boat I learned (I have quite a reactive sporty car) is the lag bit on the boat, so you just have to keep it a tad calmer and not be yanking at the wheel and the throttle like a maniac and just take your time. But that is why I like boating so much, it just makes you slow down and enjoy the activity whether you want it or not :-)

    Congratulations👏 and well done Marianne!👍 Nice Vlog that can give confidence to more ladies (and men) to go do this themselves as well! I believe all people that operate a boat should have to go through this. Too many people believe that because they can operate a car (no matter how poorly they do that as well) that they can operate a boat because it has a steering wheel and a forward/reverse lever basically like a car. They have no conception of water current effects on the boat at slow speeds trying to park it and maneuver around other boats/docks, who has the "right of way" out on the water or what different bouys and markers stand for, and the major differences in turning, handling, and most importantly stopping distance of a boat vs car, or how waves and boat wake can affect steering/handling and can cause a boat to crash and sink! She did this properly with a professional and didn't just rely on the time she's had in a boat with your experience and knowledge alongside her to give her a feeling of knowing what she's doing! Keep going all the way to getting a Captains license!!

    Awesome job Marianne! I grew up on boats so never realised how much learning is involved. I then got my English wife on a rental cruiser in the Frisian Lakes to 'take control' and it didn't go well, she didn't make any mistakes, but panicked a lot, it made me realise how much is actually involved with things like mooring and so on. We took a course and it was worth every penny. These days I'd rather have her in charge with docking etc!

      Nice to know you don't HAVE to get a license. Back in the mid eighties, my dad taught me boating skills as a young man on the Jersey shore. No license needed for salt water boating then, but I had a nice surprise when we trailered the boat to lake Hopatcong, and found out the hard way that you had to have a boat endorsement on your DL to do fresh water boating in New Jersey. Never could figure that one out, but the funky rules and laws of my old home state were some of the reasons I left over thirty years ago, Nice to live in free states😁

    Appreciate you sharing this as this would be the next step for me in boating.. start doing some courses instead of dreaming about it. :)
    Well done to Marianne for doing a good job.
    Also, Seb seems a really cool cucumber - good for nervous students.

    Driving an outboard power boat and driving a shaft drive boat are two totally different animals. Nick you are going to have to let Marianne drive yours and try to do the same maneuvers of docking etc. One safety tip/rule I failed was actually about right of way . The question was:- if I see a boat approaching on my left ( on a collision course )and doesn't look like it is going to give way , what do I do? I answered - slow down and let them go past. The correct answer was turn to the right , that way the boat which was on my left becomes the overtaking boat and still must give way. I didn't fail my boat license but it is something I have remembered my whole boating life.

    in italy commander license, without limits for non commercial boats , is much harder. From theory with meteorological , charting and sea rules test in admiralty, to pratical ones , seawrecked rescue , boarding manouvres done with professional boat without bow trusters or joysticks. Got mine with 6 fts waves and 4 hours waiting in Genova Gulf.
    4 licensed 6 rejected at sea 3 rejected at theory tests. Think limited license is a lot easier

    That was great when she pulled into the slip and he said good job, but she immediately looked over and said I need to do it again. Driving a small light weight boat like that is actually harder than a larger boat. It's effected by wind and water current a lot more. Small mistakes turn into bigger mistakes a lot quicker. She did great. It's hard to keep from getting frustrated.

    Great job! What took her a day took me weeks and that's just part 1 of the videos. This makes me want to get some training. You would think there are several schools to pick from in Florida or somewhere on the East Coast. Let the research begin. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to watching the other parts.

    it's not as easy as it looks it will be a lot harder if the water is choppy .... i don't know how i would fare doing it ..there will be a nack to doing it but also a lot of experience to master being able to steer/control and captain a boat no matter the size .. you just can't go off land and step in a boat and be able to steer it like a pro ... and well done Marianne
