  • In the third of our series of videos aimed at helping with the tricky task of identifying warblers, we take a look at Reed and Sedge Warbler. BirdTrack reports show that Sedge Warblers are now here in force and Reed Warblers aren't far behind. So it's a good time to brush up on the songs and ID features of these two common species. Check out the video, and don't forget, once you've mastered the art of identifying them, log your sightings on BirdTrack.

Saw my first sedge warbler today - at least, that’s what the Merlin app told me it was from its extremely loud and frantic song! Came here to check and I’m sure it was right. Very happy to have another bird to look out for on walks in the local water meadows 🙂

the first sedge warbler i saw, or hear at first, on the banks of the river conwy was a truly memorable experience- i thought at the time it was the best songster ever!

Sedge warbler sounds like a scratchier version of a skylark to me.

Realise I'm over a decade late to this video but to me the sedge and reed warbler songs are quite easy to separate:
Reed warblers sound like a kid playing with a toy laser gun, pressing various buttons for it to reel through its programmed list of noises.
Sedge warblers deliver a babble of absolute nonsense with (crucially) notable flutey high notes which the reed warbler song never has.
