Windows back then is so exciting and cool. Computers were just new and a new technology era has started. People would do anything just to get a copy of Windows.
Thanks for posting this. I remember using Windows 3.1 back in the 90s. Computers were so cool back then. Sure, they probably had half the power and storage capacity as my two year-old smartphone (if even that), but still, having a computer back then was really neat. It was before everyone had one, so if you did have one, you almost felt like part of an elite group.
Surprisingly, processing power doesn't grow as much as memory. One of the earliest processors for these machines clocked at 33 MHz. Today's fastest processors clocked at about 9 GHz, 270x faster. On the other hand, RAM had grown from roughly 8 MB to 128 GB (16384x bigger).
3.1 will never die. Lol My previous job was at a cabinet shop (I left in late 2020) that still used several legacy Windows OS. Mostly 95 and some 2000ME. But there was still one CNC router that ran on the OG 3.1 build until 2018 when the monitor in it finally crapped out. They then upgraded it to XP. . . I'm sure if one looked hard enough, they'd find 3.1 systems still functioning in some industrial, non-office use.
>I'm sure if one looked hard enough, they'd find 3.1 systems still functioning in some industrial, non-office use. I've heard Deutsche Bahn, the federal railroad enterprise of Germany and the largest railway company in the world is still using it, no joke.
Southwest Airlines still use 3.1 on some of their departments, sparing the airline from the recent Crowdstrike update that BSODed PCs around the world.
I remember having a bunch of those in my home when I was a kid. Most people today know about the 3½" floppy disks but not many knew about 5¼" or the OG 8" disks.

Nice video! I had an Olivetti with Intel 486 Dx 25MHz, 4 MB RAM and Windows 3.11. The keyboard was very similar to this, it didn't have the Windows keys.

Nice ! I have few 286 systems with win 3.1 installed on them) Also a Siemens-Nixdorf p1/75, which looks like a bit the computer here on the left from that one
My first computer in the early 90’s was a 386 DX ( I think) As I recall, it was a little over $3,700. ( in early 90’s dollars). I think that one game program I loaded had 20 5 1/4 “ floppy disks.
incredible how responsive and snappy Excel was even on that old machine (with that horrible operating sysem). these days Excel-2016 on a machine from 2022 isn't even able scroll through large spreadsheets fluently.
Isnt it because they stop being turned on that they stil doing today? Yet they can run without a software. But when use daily they will not go for another 20 years?
Everything looked so professional back then 😭😭
I know right
That loud airplane noise made me think that a computer would have alot in store
A cool computer to use to this day since this year marks Windows 3.1's 30th anniversary. Another great PC demonstration!

Pretty sure your phone had orders of magnitude more processing power than this PC
@@catsarethebest36 Yea, that's what I was gonna say. >w>'

I miss these days.
Great trip down memory lane for me this, so thanks for sharing.
I'd love to have that keyboard. Those mechanical keyboards from the late 80s/early 90s were the best!
Windows 3.1 saves the day during CrowdStrike outage - Southwest Airlines scrapes by with archaic OS
Cool, brings back memories with my old PC.
I have Windows 3.1! I like the fact you can change the background and the window colors.
5 inch floppy is what impressed me!
I remember having a bunch of those in my home when I was a kid. Most people today know about the 3½" floppy disks but not many knew about 5¼" or the OG 8" disks.
I miss classic UI design, no hamburger menus to be found anywhere.
Why? Don't you think it looks a little chaotic? Kinda complicated like the cockpit of an aircraft?
There is a hamburger menu in the top left of each window to close it
