  • The Indian economy has seen a meteoric rise in recent years, but one statistic remains unsettling: low employment. A growing population is demanding more jobs, even as growth rates soar. Can the world's largest and youngest workforce make good on its "demographic dividend" -- or will India grow old before it grows rich? We're joined by former Reserve Bank of India Governor, Raghuram Rajan, on what strategies the Modi government can deploy.

Many places in north India, where unemployment is worse, say that the young population is useless. However, these same youth are illegally going abroad looking for employment & doing great.
China transformed their country into a developed one, when they had a big youth population. In Japan & the west, they are asking for more young workers.
Meanwhile, in last 10 years, the corporate tax for Indian corporations has been 22% & foreign corporations is 35%. These corporates give political donations. The revenue loss from reduction of corporate tax, is being covered by higher income tax on common people. India's poor & middle class pay 50% & 33% gst, industrialists pay only 3% gst
India's manufacturing shrank from 17% in 2010 to 13% in 2022 to 11.4% in 2023, as per Index of Industrial production performance data. This is due to high inflation & customs tax. Meanwhile, in Feb, Union govt had reduced funding for education. More than 26,100 govt schools have closed in UP, according to Indian Govt's United District Information System for Education UDISE reports.
Bank rate is a good measure of where inflation is in the country. Why is the bank rate at 6.5 per cent for the last 13 months, if inflation is low as claimed by fm in economic survey 2024. Inflation is an added tax on poor & middle-class taxpayers. Meanwhile, big Corporate's untaxed funds are in the Cayman islands, so that their 10 generations, can live like kings.
Meanwhile, Govt wants to take away private farm lands, to give it to big Corporations. The Supreme Court has deemed electoral bonds legalized corruption, making the ruling party the world's richest political party in 10 years. We should never forget that govt are public servants, & they should not to be revered like god-king. This Govt has prioritised imported luxury cars for VVIPs over the needs of ordinary voters.
According to CAG report, the financial rail budget had said that 20,000 crores will be invested by our Union govt to increase the safety of Indian railways, but only 4,225 crores were released for rail funds for safety. Also, union govt has neglected that rail workers who are being overworked while there are lakhs of rail jobs which are waiting to be filled in 10 years.

The problem with immigration from India is that as he points out in the video India has a large disparity between people who have higher education and those that don't
Most countries would rather have the doctors, scientists and engineers than the unskilled labor

UK charges 40 per cent tax on salaried class who earns above GBP40k. In India you don't pay any taxes if you earn up to Rs 1m. UK and many European countries made their infrastructure with the looted wealth from their colonies whereas India is creating infrastructure using its own resources. So the small industrial and services sectors are closing which is creating job crisis. Modi's economic model is government spending, which is not the ideal way of growth.

Yes, it is. But that growth is not job-led growth(consumer led growth). Infact most of that growth is jobless growth, which means it's not reducing poverty or bettering lower/middle-class thereby increasing our tax base as this type of growth is inflationary and competition reducing. Long way of saying, it's useless and I would even say harmful as we are on our way to become oligarchic economies like Russia.

He spoke well, but the conclusion is wrong. The problem is service industry is nothing India needs for its domestic market, its own people.
Manufacturing is a good starting point for developing countries, because at the same time of exporting those products, the country itself, its infrastructure and people's quality of life can benefit from it. Without it, no matter how many highly trained people you have in high-end jobs, they will want to move abroad as soon as they have the chance..
On top of this, he admits that service industry can't create so many jobs, and with the advance of AI, it will decrease even more.

Everything is fine. India's youth unemployment rate is 83% according to the International Labour Organisation. It also stated that in 2000, the unemployment was 35.2%. In 2022, it was 65.7% & 2024 to 83%. India's official data says it's 9.2%, & in states like Haryana, Rajasthan, & Bihar have even higher unemployment. India's manufacturing is down from 17% to 11.4% of gdp in just 13 years. And who needs schools when you can just close 26,100 in UP? Who cares about higher income tax for individuals? Since Indian corporations need more money, they get a lower tax rate of 22% & foreign ones is 35%. High bank rates (6.5%) & claims of low inflation? No problem, poor and middle-class taxpayers can just absorb the extra cost. It is fine really.

In india as far as employment is concerned, only the MSME sector can create jobs. Unfortunately, statutory compliance is complicated, deterring investment. We don't have to copy from the West or East to generate employment. A parallel economy has to be evolved with minimum Govt control. For example, EPFO organisation has draconian powers and a complicated compliance with 5+5 accounting heads to pay provident fund . Govt exempted their employees from provident fund but covered the entire private sector, loading them with outdated laws.

The passion for globalisation is no longer there in the West. It’s clear to most that corporations are just undercutting wages for zero national benefit.
At least with cheap goods the consumer benefitted. Now with accounting work going overseas it only benefits other corporations that would use an accountant. In the case of exporting services, it has zero national benefit and Congress “should” step in a lot faster. Not to mention quality of work is not there, yet.

Health and hospitals can create a lot of jobs, I mean private hospitals, Government Hospitals are liability on Tax payers. For Government should stop levying service tax of 22% on health insurance, stop charging 5% tax on room rent more than Rs 5000 in private hospitals.

Census has not been conducted, so govt was thinking that it can brush away the unemployment issues under the carpet but the election outcomes proved them wrong.
The government has no other option but to work towards reducing unemployment. Had it conducted a proper census and unbiased surveys from time to time, this situation would have never arrived in the first place.

What government can do is get out of the way of entrepreneurs and citizens that can want to do business. Also in a country like India income tax is theft by government since they don’t provide anything. Indian government have taxation on everything.
total tax burden on citizens is higher than of european countries.
Every step of the way government is involved which increases bureaucracy .
