Thank you First post & Palki !Excellent interview, intense , focused and well coordinated ! Yes the states need to be accountable for the funds they request and their responsibility in wealth creation. Most of them use it for dispensing freebies and maintaining anti social elements to threaten supporters of other parties in their state.
More jobs yes but low or inadequate salaries for today's youngsters is equally frustrating, especially when they have zero work life balance and terrible travel challenges, be it by road, train etc.
That's why many are leaving the country at the first instance, dreaming of a cleaner environment and better work place.

    1. Food security - factor 1.6 billion people with looming threat of climate challenges. Food inflation is spiking. Our agri production is way below the expectation
    2. Supply chain and logistics cost to be reduced lot. But every year increasing toll is not the way
    3. Our dependency on China. Our trade imbalance is alarming
    4. Cut down red tape in every govt department. Bring all services online and eliminate delay and corruption
5.Mandate our premier institutes to nation building. It is a shame we can't produce a fighter jet engine even today.

Why population control measures which were vibrant in 1960s. 1970s dwindled after 1980s.. What stopped government establishment to think Population will find its own balance .. Damage is done now .. Any improvement is sucked by this burgeoning population within days .. Generation of 50 crore jobs is also less .. CHAOS and CORRUPTION is the natural outcome which we are seeing now

Please do not compare indis with Japan. A friend of mine who worked in Japan long time back told me that average Japanese works for 18 hrs per day in the company.
My own experience in india. I purchased a new TATA car. When I reached their workshop for first serving I noticed a sea of difference as compared my to HONDA CITY workshop. Very poorly maintained workshop at tata motors, quality of work and customer interaction etc was telling its own story.
Simple mathematical models will not be good enough. I had requested for back side camera which was never implemented with promises 10 time but no work.
We have 50% of population which is good for nothing and lot of them sit in Govt office only collecting bribes and doing nothing.

Economists talking about creating jobs is one thing. Government policies is another. Entrepreneurs (whether a big corporate or a small factory or shop) create jobs. The problem is that corruption is the root cause of all problems. Even a hawker who has no option but to sell on the street is harassed by the police and municipalities. Even if all the middle class people were educated well, there will still be a lot of unemployment. Unless we create decent roads, and have a good ecosystem for entrepreneurs, we are doomed. Just big corporates are not enough for creating jobs. We need small scale industries. Majority of our politicians are also uneducated and we have IAS officers taking orders from uneducated people.

We have grown by 7% in last 10 years even at lower base and growing population base.
8% growth rate over 30 long years is too optimistic and very biased.
India with it's young workforce with median age of 30 should try to grow by 10% in next 5-6 years and then the growth will taper off. By 2047, we'll most likely to grow below 5%
Just imagine what's he's saying..china(at 17 Trn USD) is growing by 4.5%, US (at 28 Trm USD) is growing by 2% and this wise gentlemen is projecting 8% even after india crossing 20 Trn.
Such people are dampener for India's growth which only project future and not the reality.

One idea for large scale employment in India: India has 7500 kilometers coastal line. Construct sea road (0.5 kilometer wide) along the coastal line. At some places, the sea is shallow up to 10 kilometers where the development can be extended. This will employ millions of people in construction, transportation, tourism, etc.

I appreciate Dr. Subramanyan's enthusiasm, but I do see several flaws in his explanation from a rigorous analytical perspective:
    1. Lack of Inflation Adjustment:
Nominal vs. Real GDP: He uses nominal GDP figures, which are not adjusted for inflation. This makes comparisons across time periods misleading, as the value of money changes significantly over decades. ₹9,000 in 1947 had far greater purchasing power than the same amount in 1991 or today. To accurately assess changes in living standards, he should use real GDP per capita (adjusted for inflation).
Misleading Comparisons: Without inflation adjustment, the claim that India has "retrieved" its 1947 GDP per capita level is inaccurate. It implies that people are as well off today as they were in 1947, which is unlikely.
    2. Ignoring Purchasing Power Parity (PPP):
Cost of Living Differences: Nominal GDP per capita doesn't account for differences in the cost of living between countries. $2730 in India buys a different basket of goods and services than $2730 in the US. PPP adjusts for these differences, providing a more accurate measure of relative living standards.
Underestimation of Progress: Using nominal GDP per capita likely underestimates India's progress compared to other countries. PPP-adjusted GDP per capita would likely show a more significant improvement.
    3. Oversimplification of Growth Trajectory:
Linearity Assumption: He implies a somewhat linear decline and recovery of GDP per capita, which is not accurate. Growth is rarely linear and is influenced by various factors.
Lack of Context: He doesn't delve into the reasons behind the decline in the pre-liberalization era (e.g., socialist policies, slow industrial growth) or the factors driving growth post-1991 (e.g., economic liberalization, globalization).
    4. Limited Scope of Metrics:
Single Indicator Focus: Relying solely on GDP per capita provides an incomplete picture of development. Other crucial factors like poverty rates, income inequality, health outcomes, and education levels are essential for a comprehensive assessment.
Neglecting Distribution: Even if GDP per capita has increased, it doesn't necessarily mean everyone has benefited equally. Analyzing income distribution and social indicators is crucial to understanding the impact on different segments of the population.
    5. Potential for Bias:
Selective Data: He focuses on specific years (1947, 1991, present) to support his narrative. A more comprehensive analysis would consider the entire time period and potential fluctuations in growth.
Nationalistic Tone: While pride in one's country is natural, it's important to maintain objectivity in economic analysis. His presentation might be influenced by a desire to highlight India's achievements, potentially overlooking some challenges.
    In Conclusion:
While Dr. Subramanyan's explanation captures the broad trend of India's economic journey, it suffers from significant methodological flaws. A more rigorous analysis requires adjusting for inflation, considering PPP, using a wider range of indicators, and providing a nuanced interpretation of the growth trajectory.

Very very optimistic, even fanciful. In real terms at 8% growth, it is 8 times in 27 years. So we end up with a per capita of $20,000 which is still commendable. But we have hardly done 7% real growth in the past 10 years. Now I do not take his numbers seriously because he is adding inflation to get nominal numbers. The problem someone may say - why limit to 5% inflation? let us make it 10% inflation. In that case nominal growth can be even more. Why not inflation at 20%? I don't know why inflation is added. let us do real growth of 6% which is more realistic.

  • @jimkuan8493

Indian GDP Growth is one big lie. It is just the result of change in GDP number accounting, TWICE, once in 2017 and once in 2019. It hyped up the GDP growth number to honey trap foreign investments. It is not working. Just have a hyped Indian stock market for the gamblers. No one with a common sense would invest in India long term. The central government might have good wishes for the foreign investors. But local governments and local enterprises will eat these foreign investors alive, with difficulties in labor, land, water, electricity and even retroactive tax laws.
Since 2023, there is huge out rush of foreign investors from India market. And it is getting worse. The Indian GDP growth will continue for sure, as its population keeps growing. But it is just PRODUCING THE SAME OLD JUNK FOR THE SAME OLD DOMESTIC MARKET and call it GDP Growth. More Cow Dungs, basically.
