So funny this video shows up the day after I place an order for the mini after going back and forth over the mini vac or the mini! I’m very excited and can’t wait for the mini. I currently have the Iris 700 vac. I think I’m going to get the mini vac also.

Like purely for the intro :) I haven't watched the rest yet! My first TWSBI pen arriving tomorrow with any luck, a Diamond 580 clear with a 1.5 stub nib.

When a man with a full size fountain pen meets a man with a mini fountain pen...

Really...REALLY love my Vac Mini. Use it as an everyday carry or when I write for very long sessions. Even though I write with it everyday, it can get up to an avg of 1 week of use before I even bother to refill it again. Take in mind, I am a heavy writer than an avg. joe, but not as much as a writer who writes stories, more on notes and leisure writing.
The nib is really really great, just the right amount of feedback, I'd say on the scale of 2/10 while having 0 skips and wet enough to be smooth, while dry enough to not worry about smudging and feathering even on cheap paper.
Maybe if I could go back in time, I'd go for the clear version as is in this video, I got the "smoke" one, maybe even go for the 700r since it'd be just the same pen but bigger (because I don't mind carrying a larger pen). But even then, it's still perfect, I just keep it in my jeans and don't even worry about it too much.
Just a note that at first I bought an EF, which was *VERY* scratchy, so scratchy that it literally rips the paper, almost as if it was made with an edge, also think it had baby's bottom. Went back to replace it with a M, no issues whatsoever after... maybe just some slight cracks along the bottom part since I think I over tightened it, but performance wise, 9.5/10 could be just a tad smoother.

Do you think that putting a bit of felt material (similar to the one found in the Varsity) in the interior of the VAC mini would solve the problem? I mean to put it from the back of the feed to where the valve touch the section. I find that the ink has difficulties going from the body to the section. I have no o-ring and the knob open. The problem seems similar to what happens in some converters where the ink does not go down.

That would be an interesting option.

+rafaelpapp it probably happens to be because of the ink itself. i used a monteverde green that was from a giveaway a it was an experimental version that has a bit of lubricant in it, so it could be the ink people are using.

Conclusion: I will order another Diamond 580 Rose Gold and if I want a “pocket pen”- Delike Antique Brass pocket with a Lilliput clip wins most reviews hands down. A flawless wet perfect writer.

What are your thoughts on using pigment ink like platinum carbon or sailor kiwaguro in these pens?

Another superb video. I wish my TWSBI Diamond 580 would post as neatly as the mini does. Thanks for another great video Stephen!

I've got 7 TWSBIs, with zero cracking issues - so to my mind that's a problem now in the past? But I do have both of these pens commented on in this clip and I have to agree with every thing you say about the Vac Mini.
Mine too errs on the dry side and (infuriatingly) dries up inside it seems several words from first symptoms that drying is happening - and persuading it to restart is - "interesting". Its nib (F in mine) is acceptable, if a bit dry; just as you remark. And this is with various experiments with various numbers of back-twists of the piston control knob.
My Diamond Mini has all the appeal of a small pen without any of the drawbacks of its more expensive sibling. As to capacity, you'd have to be a real scribble-hog to dry out a Mini unless maybe using a B nib that would drink the ink more quickly. In my version of this shoot-out the Diamond Mini takes the podium, no question. In fact if I could reverse the purchase of the Vac variant, I'd do just that.
My four Eco models are pretty much sin-free, and I might get the new colour just noticed. I like the Eco, although I've reservations on its cap design - and also its lack of a metal collar to brace the stressed plastic area containing the nib. But so far, no failures.
My 580RB is a nicely solid decent sized pen and a virtue they share is interswappable nibs. That's nibs, not nib units. Incidentally I tried a Bock #5 in two of mine and it seemed to me to just not-want to enter the section; possibly made of a slightly thicker plate stock?
All of these were bought in the last several months (2017)

Another pocket pen that is highly durable is the Kaweco sport... :|

Steven, you mentioned the cracking issue - I know in the past that was an issue with TWSBI is it still an issue?

    • @sbrebrown
      @sbrebrown  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Some say yes and others no. I haven't had my Vac Mini crack, but my Mini cracked and it required replacement parts.

My TWSBI Vac Mini is a leaky disaster. The ink is permanently dispersed between the fixed (as in not cleanable) components and looks terrible. Not surprised to hear there have been "quality control issues" reported. Avoid.

I'm not a fan of either pen. I was hoping they'd both die in the shootout.

I dislike this comment only because I love my TWSBI Vac Mini & It Writes Beautifully. But then again that is your opinion and that is that. You don't like them & I do LOL. Nick.
