Is this older Macro lens good enough for astro?

  • A 100mm F2.8 lens is a great tool for wider field work, in theory. How does this venerable lens hold up to modern sensors?

Vetting a lens for astrophotography can be a bit of a pain, as most reviews don't dive deep into lens performance when used on the night sky. As such, I have been compelled to create lens reviews specifically for astrophotographers, which dig into lens performance in somewhat exhaustive detail - all to uncover how the lens performs on the stars.

Loving these "old" lens reviews. Have you done any reviews in lenses in EF mount at around the 16mm focal length give or take? Mostly for wide milky way shots. I have my canon 16-55mm kit lens but it does have some fairly extreme fringing. Just wondering if you have some videos at this focal length which in my collection is what I'm especially weak in. I know I can look through your old videos, and I will. Just wondering if some old lens struck you as special. Thanks for these reviews!!

If you’re shooting Canon APS-C, that makes 16mm roughly the same field of view as ~26mm full frame. I tested the Viltrox 16mm F1.8, but as it’s a mirrorless lens I don’t believe it would be available for any Canon RF cameras. Canon has a budget 16mm F2.8 for mirrorless RF mount as well, but I don’t think I’ll be able to test that anytime soon. And in either case those wouldn’t much help you. The best options available to you are Canon’s older EF 14mm F2.8, which I did own the “II” version of at one point. It wasn’t very good, mind you, but maybe with an APS-C crop it wouldn’t be that bad. Sigma’s 14mm F1.8 DG HSM has an EF version, and would be a better choice at around that 24mm-equivalent-ish field of view. That said if you wanted wider finding an old Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 DX lens is a viable option, but it suffers from quite a lot of astigmatism. From there you’d be looking at maybe a Laowa or Samyang lens, but I don’t have enough experience with lenses from them at that wider field of view.
