I never thought about putting a piece of “jar opener” in my tool kit for the needle screw! Genius! I’ve always used needle nose pliers and they’re awkward. I’m putting that in my toolbox today! Thanks, Michelle!!! 🥰
Wooden chop sticks for pushing out corners. Cans of tuna can hold down pattern pieces. A dishwashing sponge can act as a pin/needle holder. A rolling pin (all sorts of sizes and weights) can press seams. A cookie sheet makes sorting buttons and such easy. A kitchen apron can be turned into a sewing apron. Use a carpenter's apron for design ideas. Save rubber bands from fresh broccoli for heavy duty use in the sewing room. Parchment paper can also be used for pattern making. A roll of bakers twine can be useful in a sewing room, from time to time. Dried beans and some fabric scraps can become bean bag pattern weights. Cooking oil mister bottles can be used to dampen cloth before pressing. Dish towels can be used as simple machine dust covers. A pair of heavy duty kitchen shears are useful when turning old blue jeans into useful fabrics. Disposable aluminum pie pans, filled with specific fabric pieces, can be stacked for temporary storage.
I love your take on "simple" organization . . . as you say, it doesn't have to match, just be functional. Which leaves more money to spend on things you do need to buy, such as thread, etc. 😉 Also, you mentioned using mugs (which I use a lot). Just wanted to tell you and your viewers about a free pattern for sewing a fabric mug organizer. Jo from Vintage Style by Jo here on TH-cam very recently did a free tutorial on making these wonderful little organizers! It makes your mugs function even better! 👏 I'm planning to make several out of scraps to keep at my different work areas for all those small tools one needs handy. 👌 Or you could just make one and put it on one of your trays you mentioned in this video and it could travel with you from one area to another. 👍🤩 Lots of wonderful ideas from you here today! Be sure to check out Jo's video with the free pattern and tutorial. 😁 Also, glad you're feeling better, but you certainly don't sound completely well, so take care of yourself and get well soon. 🥰🤗
I use the non stick shelf liner material under my sewing machine foot pedal to stop it from "scooting" away while I sew. I also cut up a yoga mat to stop vibrations & serve as a great sewing machine pad.
That grippable shelf liner is also good for foot pedals so they don’t slide on your hardwood floors. And don’t forget parchment paper for Pratt clause.
Good ideas. I use a wall paper roller to roll my seams, my ruler handle was for shower stabilization and as you mentioned mugs, and jars of button’s. As soon as a product is labeled for quilting it becomes very expensive. I also have the silicone mats. The large one for cookies the smaller one for quilting. There are probably many others. I am a container person I don’t care for plastic bags because the slide and are messy so I use boxes all different sizes, colors, even my MIL’s old jewelry containers for my hankie collection, sea glass etc all things for someday projects. Glad you are getting better. My family has been passing their colds around since holidays. Take care. TY
Love all these ideas for the sewing room! One thing I've found useful for the shelf liner is to place my foot pedal on it while sewing and it helps keep it from sliding around so much, hope this helps someone.
I purchase sandwich lunch meat in clear boxes. When I cut too many pieces with my accuquilt I put the pieces in one of these labeled boxes. Then when I want to try a pattern I have precut pieces to try it our. I uses these boxes to hold all sorts of things all over my sewing room Thank you HEB for good lunch meat and good reusable boxes.
I use an empty parmesan cheese container to hold broken or old needles and pins. When the lid is open you can even fit 45mm rotary blades through the pouring side.
I use the Oui French yogurt jars as holders for pencils, little rulers, point turners, etc. I keep my rotary cutter and Klutz Glove in a shortbread tin; fits in a drawer and is easy to grab when I’m taking it to a meetup.
I buy Medjool Dates in green plastic containers. I try to stay away from purchasing plastic myself (what others do does not get judged) but these containers are great for EPP hexies, glue stick, needles, thimbles, spool of thread, needle threaders, and seam rippers. I use homemade goo-gone to remove the label adhesive. I keep a glass jar near my machine to put all of my cut threads in. I smoosh it all down every once in a while. If a sewing archeologist ever chose to dig through it, my history of projects could be reconstructed by the threads in that jar, going back to 2017 when I made my daughter’s wedding dress and parts of her attendants’ outfits. I have a smaller jar near my chair where I do hand sewing, embroidery, knitting, and crochet. Great video!
I use small and medium size Mason jars instead of the cups. I have one for colored pencils, one for my Frixion pens, and one for other marking tools. They're a little taller and no handles to break :)
You meantioned this one, but I use a cereal bowl to make rounded corners on those large potholders that you place on your kitchen counter to place hot pans, etc.
Hi Michelle. Love the Jar Opener Idea. For my unique buttons and beads I use old cookie trays and store them in one of my drawers 3 stack nicely. Thanks for sharing
Great ideas. I'm always looking for clever ways to be more organized. Love the idea of the jar opener to help with that pesky needle screw! Thanks for your time!
I found 2 gallon bags at dollar tree that would be ideal to store the different baggies you have for a project so you have them all together in one place and they don’t get scattered. Love those ideas and you know what else you can use those round objects from the kitchen to make scalloped edges on your quilts. Thank you so much for sharing.
Glad you're feeling better today, several folks in my guild have had colds this past week. Great tips and ideas for using items most of us already have in our homes. The round shelf liner grippers are my go-to for so many things, very handy! I recently purchased a magnetic knife strip; I'm going to mount it to the side of my metal Ikea cart! 🪡🧵✂❣
I cut a layer or two of batting to put in the bottom of my cups I use pens or tools. Less noise!
I love this idea! I need to try this!

You are so right! It is amazing how expensive quilting supplies get! I hope your family gets better and stays better soon!!!
Love seeing the wool pincushion that Nancy made for us. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
It has been there for quite some time! Have you seen her little sheep pincushion/needle minder sitting on my cabinet shelf in the background?

I like this idea and bet it works great!!!! Then you have all those extra pieces ready!!
Love these ideas-especially the one with the shelf liner to help you with the screws!
I use an empty parmesan cheese container to hold broken or old needles and pins. When the lid is open you can even fit 45mm rotary blades through the pouring side.

Thank you so much for watching!
Parchment paper is a must if you use any type of sprays such as startch or basting products.
I agree! It's great for keeping your work surface clean.

It is a must in my quilt room!!!
Thank you for sharing. I had not thought of some of these as helpmates for my sewing room. Who doesn't love to organize!

I use painters tape a a lot too and I keep some in the kitchen!!! Thanks for sharing!

You are so welcome! I am also feeling much better!
I save the glass containers that candles are in, I clean and label for storage. The wide top is perfect
I like this idea! Thanks for sharing!
Great ideas. Thanks for sharing
You are so welcome!
I use parchment paper when I iron the tape to piece my batting and when doing fusible applique.
Great idea! Thanks for sharing!
I use the grippy little shelf paper and cut out a piece big enough to put underneath my sewing pedal. It helps a little.
I have done that also! Thanks for sharing!
Great ideas! Thank you

Excellent!!
I use Kraft Parmesan cheese containers to store quilting safety pins. Generic. brands also work.
Those would make great storage containers! Thanks for sharing!
