    thats just confusing. Id say to only reinforce parental permissions for under 13s- (e.g parents be able to ban kids from certain apps) not just straight up get rid of them
    And, as someone who got puberty very late, I can imagine loads of people thinking 13 or 14 year olds are under 13 and reporting them :/

  • @quipsilvervr

    The thing was, children weren't meant to be on Quest 2s in particular, and all Meta is doing is enforcing this. I know that the few times myself or others I've met have had issues in VR has been due to squeakers and I'm honestly happy that they are getting punted. In reailty, the moment one of those kids saw anything or had an issue, their irresponsible parents woulda tried to point the blame at anybody but themselves. It's not a popular opinion, but it's a realistic one.
    Right now with VR getting shat on by the media and also from the dummies that are hating purely for clicks, the last thing we as a community need is VR coming under fire because some children started playing B&S nomad or similar titles and now needs therapy because it overloaded their developing minds. That's not even taking into account that a small kid with a developing body having a headset pulling their head down for hours a day with potentially incorrect IPD. This problem needs studied over a longer period. Either way, there is a mountain of reasons a child shouldn't be in VR, and the only opposing arguement is "what if people get angry with us?", and that shouldn't carry any weight.

      Actually, I remember a study that showed long sessions of VR for 8 year could affect some of their development when it comes to independent movement from the direction of their head. Little spurts every no and then doesn't seem harmful, but kids shouldn't have all access to the internet, let alone a VR social platform, to begin with. That's just parents being irresponsible

    As being a 12 year old and turning a teen In July I can see why they are going to remove us. I feel bad because I loved talking to people on VR and getting to know different lifestyles. I was so chill and I got to play with my friends too. A lot of my friends are older than me so they won’t be kicked. I also feel bad for the parents that got their kids a headset not too long ago. My favorite game was rec room and gorilla tag. I seriously hate what they are going to do because I was super nice & mature to people on those platforms, I’ve gone through nice and bad people on VR but what I love most is getting on that thing and meeting new people. As much as I side with those kids who are chill, I still would rather companies enforce their age regulations until the children are of age to play the games and use VR. personally I'd rather avoid the risk entirely of little shits in games rather than let them run around in VR screaming racial slurs or dropping F bombs in the game bc someone told them something that they didn't like. Plus parents use VR as a baby sitter as well as video games, so this is technically a step in the right direction if you wanna look at it from a more positive retrospective

    The problem with kids in VR is not just about their behavior. Even adults can behave worse than children sometimes. The problem is VR could be harmful to their development. Thrillseeker made a great video about it a few years ago that was based on experimental research. I think this is a great move from Meta. Banning kids account doesn't necessarily permanently remove them from VR. However it gives the clear message to parents that this is not a good practice. Allowing junior accounts gives the false impression for parents that if it is allowed it must be safe.

  • @HeckinDoga
    @HeckinDoga 2 ปีที่แล้ว +81

    I say: let the kids be mad. It's sad that some kids who sound young will be banned. It's sad that some kids who have a good foundation and head on their shoulders will also be banned. I've had dialog with some kids who were really cute and innocent on VRChat before, but I almost felt guilty letting them leave my sight (yes, it's that bad.). I'd love a way for kids to get to engage in a civil positive and safe environment and fall in love with VR at the same time, but that's is 100% a pipe dream when it comes to the internet.
    Parents ultimately should be responsible for their kids, period. If only that's all that need be said... There are far too many abusive, ignorant, or irresponsible parents to allow the platforms to get a pass on minor moderation. VRChat is evidence of that. As a user with over 1k hours, I can confirm. It's a glorified VR bar riddled with people with mental illness and poor judgement.
    Maybe one day there will be an outlet for them, but it's not in the immediate future nor is it current.

There’s been times on VRC where I’ve met some really cute and sweet kids, and I end up feeling kind of responsible for them 😅 but I know that’s not how it should be. I suppose in the first place I shouldn’t even have to be being a babysitter for this stranger’s child, even if I don’t mind doing it 😅

    I hope Meta/Facebook has a notice system in place for accounts that are at risk of being banned from Quest platforms. I have my doubts that parents buy VR headsets for their young children. I see it as the parents buying the headsets for themselves, and when they're done with it for the time being, the children use end up using it. And I'm sure they're also using their parent's account.
    Absolutely the parents should be involved enough to recognize that their children are socializing in VR, but an email notification before the account gets a ban, and a way to offer valid form of ID and age verification to stop a ban of your account should be offered.

    the 13 age limit actually was enforced, dont forget facebook was previoulsy required when Quest 2 launched and that required an account no younger than 13 years of age, thats where the age limit came from. now that facebook isnt required they most likely wanted to bump it up which I personally agree with tbh. VR isnt healthly for kids, in both a social aspect but also a medical aspect, under developing kids and kids growing up, eye sight can be an issue when they are older due to the eyes constantly trying to adapt to VRs 1.4m distance and having incorrect IPD settings can also lead to issues.

    I feel that this Junior Account ban won't stop many children, not because they can make alternative accounts or anything of the sort but simply because Rec Room is on a lot of other platforms, including mobile. In most cases, those who have a headset also have a smartphone which is able to run rec room. It certainly eliminates the possibility of using the VR features for the children, but they'll still be there in masses considering some have great value towards their Rec Room accounts.

    In so far as I understand Rec Room and Rec Room Inc are still an indie dev, and one that publishes mini games that may be geared towards a younger audiences. Meta has been doing everything in it's power to protect itself from COPPA and having one of it's more-if-not-most actively used games be a 'children's game' is going to be a hard one to explain in court if that gavel should coming a'swinging at them again. Instead of just snipping the cable between Rec Room's Oculus-specific revenue and itself Meta is giving them a chance to make themselves more 'Meta appropriate', and it's in the hands of Rec Room Inc as to what they decide to do now. Of course Meta could just STOP collecting data on their user base and they'd be all set, but that'll be the day.

    There are one or two things to say:
    1: Its a bit harsh and a perfect "Flattening a moskito with an RPG" move by meta.
    2: This is still the right decision by meta, as those minors are a pain in most games with VR games being expotentially worse (because of stuff like you not being able to just turn the sound down fast on most vr headsets). By far its not all of them, but if you only had a screaming 12 year old in your lobby, youll exacly know what i mean. The problem: As often said, the kids, arent dumb, and most of them will just make an account with a fake age. Who wouldnt? I did this for like 5-10 years until i was 18. How often do you think i was cought with my 2 dozen accounts in different things? ONCE (by youtube). And that wasnt even stopping me from making another working account.
    Its not about playing videogames with kids. Most of the time its pretty fun if you (a random guy), have the chance to teach some young person about your hobby just like someone did for you just some years before. I had several of this experiences. Some even became some kind of friendships and regular Minecraft gaming sessions with someone who just is half my age (no, not the weird kind of this) and i teached him how to play Minecraft (and he learned faster and is as good as me now).
    But VR is a different thing. Its like you are there, and with the right equipment its the perfect imersion. I own a Valve Index and im still amazed how real some games can feel using it.
    This can be dangerous to young kids that cant really tell whats real. Even i had some nightmares about being eaten alive by Headcrabs after playing Half life Alyx (possibly a bad example, but you should get my thinking). And i cant really imagine how dangerous this could be to the mind of someone a lot younger. I had some fears about some things that were generated by me watching stuff in TV that i shouldnt have. And I think having this in VR (often feeling just like reality) could be expotentially worse.

    VR being even more immersive socially than regular video games, I always found it weird to be surrounded by kids on a game (gorilla tag, rec room) when I'm 24. I don't even like hanging around teenagers (they can be even worse). It ruins the potentially social aspect of a lot of games for me. I hope once VR becomes more popular it will be more common to be around people your age.
    But maybe in the future VR can implement something similar to TH-cam kids. And have safe moderated content appropriate for different age ranges.

    • @DiamondDepthYT
      @DiamondDepthYT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a 16 year old I totally agree. I struggle to find people my age in VR, mostly because people are either way too young and annoying or just older than me. @HUEMOB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see what your saying as if I were a kid I’d be upset too. However just because it is unfair doesn’t mean it shouldn’t happen. Vr is a detriment on kids development and what they see in vr can influence kids in a bad way mentally and physically. They lack the faculties needed to be aloud to make a decision that could effect them for the rest of their lives. Kids aren’t aloud to drive. Is that unfair? Yes you could say it is but that doesn’t mean we should let kids drive. If they were to get in a accident it could kill them or leave them with lifelong injuries. They just don’t have enough life experience to be trusted to mske the right choices. Yes it’s an amazing device but like a car can be very harmful if used irresponsibly

The average 12 year old or under kid would not be responsible enough to be given a drivers license. And that’s just the skill aspect. A vr headset being used everyday by a child could affect their development in some way as some others said the weight on your neck, the lenses are so close to your eyes it could permanently impact your vision. It’s the same with driving alcohol cigarettes. Kids will always do them no matter what they are told. So we can’t Expect them to make the right choices
