Thank you for your kind comment, it's a welcome respite from the usual complaints about my poor English. This was - even considering the "smoky" days - a phantastic bicycle trip. I had planed an extension (Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii) in 2020, but now have to wait until the world returns to normal. hth
Thanks, Sirtom for a wonderful set of videos. I am planning to walk from Victoria to Alberta this coming spring. I look forward to visiting many of the sights you offered. Thanks... Stephen
Very lovely video and commentary. Funny you call it a bike path. I have lived my entire life if Okanagan and as a teen in the 70s this corridor was always known as the old rail line and then a quad and 4x4 trail, which was maintained by these users keeping it cleared of fallen trees and rock. Funny how things have changed. I now get ready for a cycle trip myself on the KVR. I would much rather ride my own atv which I have only started to use in my 50s. Bike riding is quite a challenge. Koodos to you my friend.
I used a light weight mountain bike (Bulls Copperhead, 11 kg) with additional suspension seat post (cane creek thudbuster). Especially for the leg from Brookmere to Penticton any thing else than a mountain bike is a no go. There is even a short TH-cam video of a German cyclist who could not continue, because he used a trekking bike (th-cam.com/video/5FCRMcvd_xc/w-d-xo.html)
@@hthvideography Thanks for this. We are hoping to do the KLR and are trying to decide between a touring bike with gravel tires, a mountain bike or a hybrid with gravel tires. It sounds like the mountain bike is the way to go. We hope to do Myra to Christina Lake.
As far as I understand your argumentation, you see all bike paths, which do not allow motor vehicles, as roads of discrimination? ... As far as I remember, no motor vehicles were allowed between Penticton and the end of Myra Canyon and between Christina Lake and Castlegar. Otherwise one were free to use a quad. hth
Hello, in theory it is possible, but barely (if you are looking only at the leg between Penticton and Castlegar). The problems are (1) Chute Lake resort (which is probably in the process of restauration) and (2) the leg from Chute Lake to Beaverdell. There were (are?) cabins for rent at Idabel lake. But I rather doubt you can rent them for just one day. Greeting hth
@@hthvideography Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll have to be brave and take a tent. Any suggestions as to what time of year the weather might be bearable for this trip? My experience shows that one sure fire way to find accommodation is to take a tent. Mind you I did haul a tent down the coast from Seattle to SFO and found motels everywhere except the last stop before SFO where it cost me $50 or one night's camping.
I, too, prefer to travel without tent, but I do think, it is hardly avoidable on this trip. Before you go, better check out whether Chute Lake resort is operating again (according to an article, they hoped to open up again in December 2018), otherwise you will have to carry food (not water) for three days (from Penticton to Beaverdell). I think, the best time for the trip is May to September. Have a nice ride... hth
From Chute Lake/Myra-Canyon to Castlegar: 5 days biking, 3 days resting/sightseeing; For the whole trip from Vancouver to Castlegar a bit more than three weeks. Greetings hth
The condescending snobbery/elitism directed at quad users at 5:00 is uncalled for. Every time I read nonsense like this from the cycling community, it angers me. Imagine the level of audacity required to think that YOU should decide who may use this trail, strictly because of YOUR choice of transport? This path is on Crown Land and as such, it belongs to EVERYBODY...I find that cyclists tend to have a undeserved sense of arrogance and entitlement, whereas we just want to get from point A to point B. I've witnessed more MOTORIZED users performing trail maintenance, than any cycling groups...been part of one myself. It has been PROVEN that a responsibly-driven motorcycle or quad does LESS damage to a trail because of the distribution of weight over a larger footprint, than a narrow-tired bicycle. I have ridden MOST of the KVR on either my motorcycle or bicycle and intend on RIDING this section from Myra to Beaverdell next year and will continue to exercise due-diligence and respect for other users I encounter along the way. I am not a confrontational type of person, but I look forward to the day when I encounter any KVR morality-police-on-bicycle who will try to lecture me on my choice of transport... Downed trees at 5:14 and 6:40...don't suppose you stopped to clear them, did you? I would have...
I beg to differ: Shurely the Kettle Valley Trail does not "belong" to cars, they are not allowed (with few exceptions) to use it. In my opinion it is for cyclists and walkers. Quads and motorbikes damage the surface and harm/disturb the wildlife. This is not only my opinion, but was voiced in a similar way by most people, who I did encounter on my trip and who lived near the trail or worked to maintain it.
@@hthvideography No ONE group can claim ownership of CROWN land. I respect your passion, but I have as much right to drive my motorcycle upon it, as you do with your bicycle. Having said this, I would never ride through Myra Canyon or Penticton, but I have ridden most other parts and have encountered only a handful of cyclists. Seems a bit of a waste to set aside thousands of km of historic trail for the sake of a few dozen people. Cyclists also harm and frighten wildlife. The quad and M/C riders perform a LARGE amount of the maintenance. I have never seen a cycling group clearing fallen timbers or filling pot holes.
@@nicole6028 I am open to any sort of adult dialogue. ONE group claiming ownership of a trail on CROWN land is BS. @@hthvideography You are definitely entitled to an "opinion" of how YOU think this trail should be used...but that does not make it law. During my motorized ride from Little Tunnel to Myra...I encountered 3 cyclists...in June...and at least a dozen other motorized users. So according to the cycling community, 3 people should determine how 12 others should recreate? I've got two words for that....
Thanks for the great video of the trip. I like the short clips from each little town.
That was the best account of the kvr on youtube. excellent videography and detailed narration. thank you.
Well done,enjoyed watching the vid...

I'm starting in Oliver to midway in a few days. gonna be a hot one plus I hear the mosquitoes are especially bad this year
unfortunately I'm getting a late start. was planning on doing it sooner

Is it open to power vehicles? With arthritis it’s not an option to pedal bike it for me! I would be unable to go and that is discrimination

Is an ebike an option. You wouldnt need to pedal.

You can walk and walking is great for arthritis. Otherwise, a fat tadpole would be a good option.
I'd like to do this as I've got family in Greenwood. Is it possible cycle this trip staying in motels/B&Bs? Sad to say I hate camping.
