Hi regarding the chicken coup save your money and use one of your out houses...I rescued hens and they like a good area to walk around...put a surround area outside one of the outhouses and they come and go themselves... they need so much space and freedom from where they come from...they thrive..this is what I did ...I rescued loads of them ...I was told they might only survive 6 months as they were so ill and unfed and hadn't seen light...I still have them 4 years on....use what you have be creative and don't buy any coup ...give them freedom...they look after themselves...go to bed at the same time every evening and once they are locked up at night you will have no problem...good luck...
My daughter and I rescued hens as well, they were so shell shocked when we got them but once they got used to real life they all lived for quite a few years... I also agree that it might be better to fix up one of your sheds.. maybe ask the builder what he might suggest :) I loved loved our girls and miss them so
I agree with the others, utilise your outbuildings as much as possible. A few old benches along the walls inside would be perfect for roosting, and some straw on the floor and they will be happy out.
Aisling, not too much damage for the homestead - it was horrible in my area of northern England too. The chest of drawers will come up lovely with some tlc for sure - that's definitely evidence of past or present woodworm. The donkeys 🫏🫏🫏 omg adorable girls. Love hearing about your plans. And a huge well done re the drainage ditch, that was a lot of work. Hugs to you and the girls 💞
You really have very nice people watching your channel, the advice and helpful tips they are giving will be so helpful to you as you do up your home and land.
I know up here in the North, Northern Ireland Electricity has to pay us compensation if they don't get the power up and running after 24 hours. And they have to pay even more after that for every 12 hours that it's still not on. I know that doesn't fix the power issue, but at least we are compensated if it does happen. Great to see that there wasn't any damage done to the house Aisling. Lee xx
Hi lee! Hope you're keeping well ♥️ ohhh that is handy that they give you compensation! I'm not sure if they do that here, which is mad because we are a little more than neighbours lol! I will look into it! I did get a text message from ESB inviting me to a local dinner and chance to charge up electronics which I thought was a nice gesture but still not great that power had been gone so long!
@@morrigans_cottage I just had a look there Aisling. ESB offer a similar compensation scheme but apparently in "exceptional circumstances like a storm" they cannot guarantee that offer. I can't link the document here as TH-cam doesn't like that, but if you Google, ESB 12 guarantee service to you it'll send you to a document which gives all the info you need. It might not help now, but it might be a handy thing to know in case of future power cuts. Lee xx
Hi Aisling, so happy to see you had minimal storm damage. Instead of getting rid of the bees get a beekeeper to move them further away. They are so important as a pollinator and will help you grow fruits and veggies.
It’s such a lovely spot, pure luxury when all you can hear is Birds. Thank goodness the Wind damage was not so bad,so much rain too. Tons of potential the Dresser’s and lovely memory keepsake’s. In your new home Keep up the Good Work you are doing well 💕🇬🇧🇨🇦🎄⛄️💕

Hi Aisling, so relieved that you don't have too much storm damage but sorry about your ruined food and the fallen tree. There will always be lovely donkeys when you're ready but I agree they were beautiful looking. 😊
So goodness I'm so relieved too! Honestly some fallen trees and some ruined food is absolutely fine as long as the cottage is still standing! The 3 donkeys are so lovely, I hope they find the best home ever, but if they did happen to still be available when I'm more ready, id absolutely take them!
Hi there from Friday Harbor, WA USA. Yup, we live on a small 14 acre farm and have been hit with one wind and rain storm after another. Glad we both came thru ok. Take care and love your Christmas tree💕💕
Thanks for the update after the storm! Hopefully this was the worst one this season🤞🏼 You defenitely don't need any new ones when the builers start up in the new year 🙈
Glad there was no serious damage. A small generator might be best in the short term. Solar setups are expensive and often when the power goes out, it's during bad weather when solar generation isn't great. Anyway, nice update!
Very happy that you survived the storm. I think the power off seems to be an issue everywhere. Where I grew up (rural Cape Breton) it seemed the power went off every time the wind blew any sort of gale. The worst stretch for no power I think for me was five days but it was a bad storm and trees took out power lines everywhere. My cousin had a tree rip the lines right off her house. Thankfully (knocks on wood) where I live in Nova Scotia now I haven’t lost the power more than a day (maybe a little over). We always fill the bathtub up with water before a storm so we can flush toilets if the power goes. I told hubby if we ever get to buy a house I want a wood stove so I can cook on top of it. So we can always have heat and hot food.
Hello Aisling! This video was a lovely catch up. Happy there was minimal damage from the storm. Such a sturdy cottage you have! Love the dresser from your Gran. Little spit and polish is all that is needed! I love to walk around with you and Morrie to see your land. Beautiful! Look forward to the hens moving in! That will be fun! Much love to you both, Sherry ❤❤❤
Hi sherry! Hope you're having a lovely weekend ❤️ I'm glad you liked the walk! I'm so relieved that the house was ok, despite all it's faults it's at least sturdy!! I am very thankful!
Message to Morrigan from kim, Germany: " Dear Morrigan, you have to talk to Aisling ! Tell her, that also her car is like her body. She has to to take more care of it ! Investing in health is sometimes more importand than other things...because you need the car and the body. So, please tell her lots of love from kim, and for you a big wau-wau.
Goodness! Some tips I've learned over the years: Have some lanterns. Take photos immediately after a storm for insurance. When you get the outside sorted, perhaps gutters that drain to a water storage or a drain. Perhaps a diesel heater or a wood stove with some wood stocked where you can access it. We have a power supply battery that charges with portable solar panels but I will say that all the parts are very heavy. Also if it happens once or twice annually, you may not want to invest in a 12 volt fridge but after you open the fridge to take stock (and pics) either an ice chest or just put ice packs in the regular one so things remain good. Thank goodness! It's going to be so cute - you'll get there - patience is a challenge but valuable.
I had the rabbit house version made by these people. It was quite good although I did buy a protective cover for the house bit. It lasted a few years but the wood is not that fantastic but it would certainly last you a few years
Coop looks OK. We kept hens in our last place, hoping to get some next spring in our new home. You should be able to keep 4 full size hens in each coop that size. We are converting an old shed for the hens and building a large run for them. Cant really have the free range as they will eat all the veg in the raised beds.haha.
Thank you so much for the advice! It's great to know and talk to someone who's kept hens before! I have a lot to learn but I get the girls but I want to start looking into it now!
I’m so glad the storm damage looks to be minimal, it was an angry one! Because you plan on growing veg & if you will be having flower boarders I’d pen in your plants not your chickens would be my advice & it will bode well for any future animals too, with all the best intentions/fencing etc in the world I guarantee if it’s not your animals it’ll be a deer, hare, rabbits that will find their way to your crops for lunch. Brought coops look nice but remember you’ll need to get in to clean them & if you get red mite infestation you’ll want to access every nook & cranny. Use what you have or buy one with ample access for you. On a side note, I think most animal species you may get will co-habit together well on your land as is but I would section off an area of pasture so you can use it as a quarantine/settling in temporary home for new comers. Spend good money on your boundary fencing and that no man’s land is great, I’d consider having it at any point where neighbours have animals too, a bit of distance decreases the temptation of them pushing on your fencing to say hello. ❤
Thank you so much for all the advice! The veggie garden I am hoping to make like an old stone wall around it and fence it as well! And you're so right about the boundary fences, once the house has been handled I'll be spending all the money on the land! ❤️
@@morrigans_cottage Ooo a little stone wall around your veggies will look so cute 😍. I’m so excited to see all your progress, I don’t even know you but super proud of you for managing to buy your own place, the bravery to do so and to have land to rescue animals (won’t even go into the bravery it must take to video it all for us all). I studied animal care after school & then had the balmy idea to get a degree in animal behaviour & welfare as a mature student and single mum about 7yrs ago now. Having worked in many settings such as zoo’s, kennels & sanctuaries I would so love to have my own little sanctuary one day. I can just see you popping out to feed & love on your donkeys (in your hand made crochet hat), smelling the flowers of your lilac tree on the way….. it is already wonderful but it will amazing with all the hard work you are putting in and those animals are going to be so very very lucky to call it home & you mummy too ❤
So glad you didn't have much damage, the chicken coop thing is okay, but won't last very long, we have the rabbit hutch version and while it's an okay bed for our free roaming bunnies ours is in a very sheltered postion and already showing signs of wear and tear , I'd get a proper shed (can look for 2nd hand) or look at using one of your out house/sheds 🤩
Thank you so much for the advice! I'll make look into getting a shed and changing it to a hen house! Definitely don't want to spend too much money on the Jen house if it won't lasy
Forgot to mention grans chest of drawers. Love old furniture, too much destroyed nowadays. Like your cottage will be around for ever. Amy damage can be polished and adds to the character. Won't fall apart after a couple of years❤
Not sure if you have plans for the pond but if you clear the edges to let the sun in and get the leaf sludge out, that pond will help in multiple ways to improve the health of your land
I take my car in every year to get an oil change, a tire rotation, a brake inspection, and a general inspection. Having left your windows on the latch probably helped keep your windows from being sucked out of the frames. If the winds were as high as you think, trees were going to go down no matter what. Once you get rid of your mushrooms, make that your chicken coop. It is a goid solid structure, it needs a bit of sealing for chicken security, and then put up an outdoor run.
I've only had the car 11 months so this was the first inspection I took it for, seems like the dealership just didn't do anything they were supposed to before purchase 😅 I'm delighted the house wasn't damaged! It could definitely be a coop, I am hoping to get larger animals so I think I'll need some kind of coop separate to the sheds in the future which is the only thing
Hi just a wee word about your chest of drawers you have brought into your cottage .Please get the woodworm checked just incase its still active .We bought an old cottage in Scotland it was 200 years old .It's hard work and sometimes I did cry thinking what have we done. It turned out okay it does take time and money. It was worth it in the end .Wish you all the best you and your Family. ❤From Helen Mclaren Scotland.
Hi Helen! Thanks so much for the tip I will definitely check and make sure there isn't still woodworm! Its possible it was something else but I will check them all for sure! Scotland is just stunning 🤩
Hi Aisling. I suppose the positive thing is the storm damage could have been so much worse. Your lovely cottage is OK and will probably still be standing long after we are all gone! In the UK I think if you have solar panels you can sell any power you don't use back to the grid and therefore they pay you. Maybe they do that in Ireland and it would be worth looking into. You are right to consider options as you don't want to rely on only one source of power when you are so remote. Big hugs and stay safe
Thank you so much, big hugs back from the girls and I ,❤️ I am thankful that the storm didn't get us any worse than it did! I will have to do a bit of research on the solar if I could sell it back that would be great!
@morrigans_cottage I've been giving this some further thought. A wood burning or multi fuel stove would probably keep the whole cottage warm in winter. Another possibility would be an Aga. I think you can link them to your hot water system so that you would have hot water even if your boiler wasn't working
I only know when something is wrong with my car when it starts making new odd noises, breaks down or goes in for its MOT. Mine is due an MOT end of Feb, I'm hoping all will be OK, going to book it in mid Jan so I have a bit of money time to play with just in case.
I will keep my fingers crossed the car goes well in its MOT! Mine will be due it's NCT here next year and I know one or two things will have to be fixed before it passes 😅
Hi Aisling, the damage was not too horrific, that was a relief, phew! How lovely to receive the Christmas bauble, that must have given you a little lift :) When you get hens, they would be far safer overnight in one of your brick buildings, the one you showed is pretty, but will have a short life, even in a covered run and is not really predator proof. You would of course be able to free range your ladies, but having them secure at dusk and dawn would give you peace of mind. Don't be too distressed about the girls being quite bald when you get them, they are likely to lay less during and sometimes after their first moult, which is why they are replaced at around 72 weeks, as that is usually when their first moult takes place, that is normal and they re grow their feathers in no time. xx Baldy girls are not bald because of abuse, or lack of care, the first moult is just heavy. xx
Hi! Yes I'm so relieved that the cottage was ok! That's really good to know about the hens thank you! I didn't know they maulted - I have a couple books to read about them so I will know much more before I get them! And definitely one of the stone outbuildings could work, I am hoping to use those for bigger animals so I'm seeing if there's a coop set up that might work instead!
The donkeys are lovely aren’t they?! Next year for sure… Glad to see the damage was quite minimal, all things considered…could have been A LOT worse…take your blessings where you can find them! Was thankful your lights were all okay… The solar sounds a WONDERFUL idea! I don’t think it’s very expensive or complicated. Definitely something to consider. Ta!
Oh the donkeys are just gorgeous, I really can't wait to get some of my own I absolutely love them! I am very thankful that the damage wasn't worse, a tree here and there is nothing if the house is safe! I am definitely going to enquire about a solar set up!
I'm glad damage is minimal Ais. I love the donkeys ❤ what experience do you have with chickens and donkeys etc? I am also looking at having chickens soon. I think the enclosure you are looking at is suitable for a suburban place, but may be a bit feeble for a rural property where it'll rot quickly and have to deal with predators like foxes, who'll dig straight under. This might be a good time to learn some simple building skills and get some simple battery operated tools to cut timber and a drill to screw bits together. Chickens don't mind some wonky things. It'll be helpful in restoring your stables etc too. Does your Dad do any woodwork, can he teach you the basics? Chat to your neighbours to find out how they deal with power outages. If you get solar separated from the grid you will need batteries and they can be expensive (i know, i'm totally off grid and 100% solar)
Thank you so much for all the tips! At the moment no experience with either lol I am going to do a donkey course with the donkey sanctuary before I get any, and I’m doing lots of reading on chicken! Honestly I don’t think my skills are up to making a chicken coop as of yet, although I could look to making a bought coop more secure! I will have to look into the solar more, I think it would be good to have batteries but I’ll have to look into it more’ ❤️
Well welcome to the channel! I actually lived up in grande prairie for nearly ten years! My first car was a Ford escape so I had to keep the license plate as a memory! I still have my old Alberta license too with the dino on it!
We got slammed by a storm last night. A branch came down and smashed my old chicken coop. I guess I should have dismantled it last summer but on the bright side it's in pieces on the ground now! No power but I have backup solar generator power for now.
@morrigans_cottage things got worse around 2 PST. A Tornado hit a small mountain town about 10 miles from my house. Cars were flipped and power poles snapped. Some minor damage and injuries. I have lived here for 50 years and nothing like this has ever happened like this before.
12:03 The metal on the ground looks like a ridge cap (hope I'm wrong). And that metal looks like the color of the house roof rather than of the outbuildings. It's been awhile since the storm so you've probably already checked this but, if you haven't, do have a look at the ridge of the roof on the house. I've had one come off my roof during a storm.
TL:DR When you offer to move your stuff so it's not in the builders' way, and they tell you not to bother, do it anyway. We just had a team of builders working on the old stone cottage in our back yard (in S. Sligo) and they absolutely trashed any of our outdoor stuff (and our neighbour's outdoor stuff) that they came across in the course of the job. Broken cabinets, broken storage shelves, broken ladders, debris left up on the roof, and everything else filthy and spattered voluminously with dried cement. I'm so pissed off because the night before they started work, we offered to clear out all our stuff, and put it in storage, and they told us that wasn't necessary. Clearly, what they meant was 'you don't need to clear your stuff away because we'll just do our building work as if it's not there', whereas what we meant was 'shall we move our stuff so it won't be in your way, or will you move it yourself when you come across something in your way?'.It never occurred to them that we might not want our stuff trashed.
Build your own coop. I believe there are plans online. Take into mind what your weather is and what predators live around you. Also are there dogs that roam around your neighborhood? Whatever you decide to do, make sure it is over built, strong and sturdy. Make sure nothing can dig under it. Oh also, chickens dig/scratch in dirt thus they can dig their way out. I put a layer bricks on the floor to discourage them from digging and make clean up mush easier.
Power goes out here, also. Tornadoes, usually, but sometimes ice or just high winds. A generator is wonderful. We have a propane one that will pop on and power maybe half the house when the power goes out. But, yes, a generator is great--there is that Jackery which the Internet influencers mention. They can be recharged with solar panels, which might be handy. If you were to put up a permanent solar array, I think that it might be damaged by the same high winds that affect the power grid--but something like a Jackery (or other solar power generator) could be kept inside, and only put outside when the storm is over. I imagine it might only power the refrigerator and the hot water and a few lights and maybe the microwave, but that might be all that is really needed. But, I would strongly suggest you do look into the generator--we have one, and I wouldn't try living in a rural area without one.
Thank you so so much for all the advice! I will look into the jackery I'm not sure if I've heard of it! I definitely think a generator is needed... If these storms continue I can't live without the power and you're right with the solar being at risk for being damaged too
I don't think the title needs to be changed, storm Darragh did hit my cottage, I go through damage and there's no power, I'm not sure what else I would title it
Morrigan is a perfect dog. The only reason she didn’t immediately respond (besides that there were captivating smells) was that you were talking to your phone and she didn’t immediately differentiate that the last sentence was addressed to her. That’s my defense of the perfect dog at least 😊
Sorry u lost your freezer food, when do u plan to be at the cottage full time. Also when u speak u always say we are u alone or is there someone with u that doesn’t want to be seen on camera xx
So, demolition diva did more damage than storm Darragh 😂😂😂. You did an awesome job with the ditches. I found @westcorkwanderer last weekend and have been binge watching, only uo to vid 68😂. They're great. Like you, they don't edit the videos so the video isn't a true pic. Seeing people as they are is more realistic and enjoyable and you can relate and feel part of it. If I call her she comes back😂😂, princess obviously has her own mind.. great video again, safe travels and hope everything ok with you in real time❤
Yes storm aisling did a lot more damage than storm Darragh 😂😂 rob and Clare are so lovely, and theyve done such a wonderful job on their farm house, I'm always so impressed with what they have done!
I can just see you popping out to feed & love on your donkeys (in your hand made crochet hat), smelling the flowers of your lilac tree on the way….. it is already wonderful but it will amazing with all the hard work you are putting in and those animals are going to be so very very lucky to call it home & you mummy too ❤
I advise a chicken tractor so the coop isnt stationary and the hens can take advantage of all the insects on the property
Make one on wheels and move it yourself. I watched a video - here on it.
Thabks so much for the idea I will check it out :)
So smart I will definitely look into it!
Won't fall apart after a couple of years❤
100% I'm happy to take as much old furniture as possible it really lasts forever versus the stuff you buy now!
Not sure if you have plans for the pond but if you clear the edges to let the sun in and get the leaf sludge out, that pond will help in multiple ways to improve the health of your land
That is really good to know thank you! I plan to clear up around it, put in a better fence and maybe get some ducks!!
Glad the roof is still on that's the main thing I was worried about.
Me too! I was so worried!

@SusanPuncher those are great ideas! I would LOVE an Aga! I'm definitely on the look out for a cheap secondhand one!
Next year for sure…
Glad to see the damage was quite minimal, all things considered…could have been A LOT worse…take your blessings where you can find them! Was thankful your lights were all okay…
The solar sounds a WONDERFUL idea!
Would the chicken coop hold up to the bad winds?
My plan is to have it in a sheltered area to try and keep it from storms and bad winds but it possible isn't super strong
Any idea when you'll be in for good? Your wee dog is too cute ❤
Morri is a dote! All going to plan I'd hope by the end of Feb! As long as the building work gets done on time anyway!
I will have to look into the solar more, I think it would be good to have batteries but I’ll have to look into it more’ ❤️
Folks who homestead are always showing their off the grid power sources. It certainly has opened my eyes to alternate power sources.
I definitely need to look more into it! I am glad to be on the grid but need some kind of back up plan for when the power does go!
I am new to your channel and just spotted an Alberta license plate in your hallway. Wondering how that got there. Greetings from Calgary, Alberta.
Oh no you poor thing, hopefully the power is back on soon!! Glad to hear no other damage, and maybe it did you a favor that it broke up the coop!
@morrigans_cottage things got worse around 2 PST. A Tornado hit a small mountain town about 10 miles from my house. Cars were flipped and power poles snapped. Some minor damage and injuries. I have lived here for 50 years and nothing like this has ever happened like this before.
Did they actually do an alignment???
I would hope so but I don't know 😔😔
12:03 The metal on the ground looks like a ridge cap (hope I'm wrong). And that metal looks like the color of the house roof rather than of the outbuildings. It's been awhile since the storm so you've probably already checked this but, if you haven't, do have a look at the ridge of the roof on the house. I've had one come off my roof during a storm.
Oh gosh, ok I'll check out for that tomorrow thank you for noticing! I'll make sure it hasn't come off the house!
Did your sparkly lights outside survive?
God that is such an awful experience im sorry! I will definitely be moving as much as I can, to make it easier for them and safer for me!
Thank you so much for the tips! I'm not sure if I am a good enough builder to make my own lol!
@@morrigans_cottage you are. You just don't know it yet.
We got whipped but thankfully no major damage.
Ahh I'm so glad you were all good!
Check if the rest of the old furniture has woodworm if it has do not bring it into your cottage
I will thank you!
If these storms continue I can't live without the power and you're right with the solar being at risk for being damaged too
Your cottage sustained very little storm damage. You should change the title of this video
I don't think the title needs to be changed, storm Darragh did hit my cottage, I go through damage and there's no power, I'm not sure what else I would title it
Solar power that recharges several batteries
Morrigan is a perfect dog. The only reason she didn’t immediately respond (besides that there were captivating smells) was that you were talking to your phone and she didn’t immediately differentiate that the last sentence was addressed to her. That’s my defense of the perfect dog at least 😊
Thank you! Morri IS the perfect dog, such a little angel! You're so right, clearly she thought I was still just talking to the camera lol!!
How dare you not to do any renovation.. very disappointed! ;)
😂😂😂 I am terribly terribly sorry! I got given out to by someone on one of my last videos so I just wanted to apologize to everyone for no Renos lol
Well done with the ditch it works really well, does the stream cross your land at all?
The stream is quite a ways down the road luckily! It is definitely working well I can't wait to dig it more to get it working even more!
Hey is that an Alberta licence plate on your wall ????
It sure is! I lived in Grande Prairie for nearly ten years!
go for donkeys in the future if you can
100%! I LOVE donkeys and hope to have a few when I'm more able!
Gosh, morri was really showing me up 😂 she knew I was trying to show her off so she ignored me haha! Hope you're keeping well love and hugs from the girls and I ❤️
