To everybody out there...have you ever heard of someone "going flatout"? Well, that comes from farriers nailing on shoes. You always put the flat side of the nail to the outside so the bevel is on the inside and the nail will splay outwards when it is driven. A farrier working quickly is just going "flat out".

Excellent video Trevor I ride a 17 yr old Dutch Warmblood who had white line disease and always worthy if he is ok. Radiographs every few months and soak with Cleantrax He had some rotation which has improved a lot. Two more shoeings and the old dead hoof toe will be gone. Thin soles so the farrier Does not pare much off the bottom but rasps or burrs down the sides hoof wall of toe. He has thick toe wall. I really like your explanation of everything you did. 😊
That horse was such a good boy. Didn't give an ounce of fuss and he even lifted his foot a lil when dude came back with his shoe. Poor dude tho, you can see the burn mark on his hand that is healing. I bet that hurt like hell

An A+, & a Gold star to you! Of all the videos, yours is the ***ONLY*** that EXPLAINS the correct angle of the hoof, & HOW the Horse SUFFERS when it is "long in the toe"! (Other videos show the extreme but yours shows the EARLY stage many night not notice.) I tried to explain to a novice rental manager, even drew a diagram to show to the owner. I tried to speak for animal that cannot. Some need to see the "WHY" before they will see the "HOW".

Good video.. Greetings from Denmark.... In Denmark, if you want to become a farrier, you must study for 4 years… I pay $190 for 4 new shoes to my Quater Horse.. every 6-8 weeks.. My veterinarian is also my equine dentist, specially trained, my horse have the dentist every 9 month.. chiropractor every 6 months.. vaccinated once a year.. My horse is my very best friend, 15 years old and gelding..
I think it’s funny how people are worried about if it hurts the horse, if a horse doesn’t want you to do something it will let you know. If it hurt a horse can cancel your subscription to life real fast
really love to see a farrier leave height at the caudal hoof and focus on the height at the toe! If you find that the heel crushes during a normal cycle, would you end up deciding to take the weakened heel tubules down and add a wedge pad with some sort of packing?
Hey Trevor, thanks for posting the video. I'd like to offer you a couple friendly tips. Always angle your clips whether you hot fit them or not. Hammering the clips down from straight up causes unnecessary pinching of the hoof wall where you can see distortions in the white line and hoof capsule over a shoeing cycle. It will also increase the likelihood of the clip ripping hoof wall apart when you lose a shoe. Also cutting away the base of the heel like this is a terrible practice. You are weakening the existing heel creating the possibility of quarter cracks and distortions in the caudle portion of the hoof. I realize this was a few years ago, but its still worth mentioning!

Is where exactly do you measure from and where exactly do you see when looking if is even the toe or the heel?? I would think the heel but I much rather someone tell me .. Cause ive never seen that tool before. Awesome video. I will ask a (stupid) question: Can that shoe be thinner? I do like the clips, as it appears to require less nails. Less nails, less damage to the laminate. I learned from "barefoot" folks.
Sometimes they don't crippled them so they probably wasn't crippled they came off to Easley to be crippled. They just slid right off.. you can watch other videos and they will tell you they do not have to be crippled. It just depends on the horse and what he is going to be used for. 6 weeks is a good short period of time to be shoes..
Just curious why didn't you set the nails?. Wouldn't work here in Florida hoofs stay to wet and soft have to really srt nails and mid-high clinics.. But great looking hoof. Tally Ho.. 😂
Great quality vid. Mr. Hirshberg, can you give some info on the trailer? Is it custom made? Is it from a food truck? It really makes sense using this instead of a van or the back of a pick-up. I also like the idea of offering credit card payment.
Have you welded that yourself or obtained it somewhere? This special one looks very good. There are some more basic ones available that I have seen. Anyways, I have never seen such a tool being used here (Germany).
Pass on the T square it doesnt acount for common axial/sub axial rotational devations (crooked pasterns, which are pretty common). Its a good way to get in trouble.
+Antonio Williams If you read the reviews on sites that sell these, most people buy them either because of OSHA or after an accident. They're a great idea for any activity where something heavy may smash your foot, i.e. logging, etc.
Since you said you were only doing 1 shoe and the other 3 some other time that isn't always the healthiest thing because the level of the horses legs is uneven and that can do something to their muscles

All us farriers have a scrap pile behind our shops just ask. We have to get rid of them so if someone wants one I have yet to meet a farrier who isn't happy to oblige. I will even spiff them up and make them look pretty if a kid asks tor one when I'm out shoeing

Metatarsal guards , usually worn to protect the foot from crushing injuries. Steel foundry workers wears these also.

Yes. Lots of horses dont stand that well though unfortunately. Makes our jobs as farriers so much harder when they bounce around
