    Those pigs are growing good. I asked Samuel my five year old what he likes about farming he say “I get to work with you.” He’d rather help me than play most of the time and if I don’t have something for him to do he’s standing there watching.

    Oh finally found the video I was looking for to figure out how to store field corn for feed. You wouldn't think it would be hard to find a video like this but it was! Thanks for making this. This is exactly what I'm doing this year for our hogs. Just couldn't figure the best way to store the corn. I'll build a shed just like this.

    It looks like that your pigs really really love you, such as the way they come to you pointing and poking their snout at you while grunting so fast. I've read another site which says that more grunting and faster grunting mean happy bliss. Grunting in general means happiness, and a pig approaching someone with its snout pointed at and lightly pressing the person means that the pig loves you

    Teaching your kids (sons and daughters) the value and importance of work is a vital lesson every parent owes their kids. Lots of parents shield their kids from work and the results are disastrous for the kids and their families. It's stupid and irresponsible to 'shield' kids from work. Applause to you Michael McGie for blessing your kids with the appreciation of work and all the beautiful life-gifts you and your wife give them as that occurs.

    Thanks for the video, but i was hoping for a little more explanation on the process. So id like to ask a couple questions, if i may. First, was the purpose of your corn barn to just store the corn? How long will it tend to be good for in there? Is there a video for all that i might not have seen? Secondly, about how much corn you think you have to grow for say just 1 pig? Will they get enough nutrition from just eating corn?
    Im new to pig farming, my grandfather passed away in Dec due to Covid. 2020 was supposed to be the year i learned what i needed to know for raising pigs to be profitable. Unfortunately covid kept that from happening. Now im trying to continue his farm as per his wishes, but while i have a tremendous amount of determination to do this I've got next to zero knowledge on how. So, im hitting youtube for all my questions. If you or anyone else that reads this is willing to take the time to offer some advice id greatly appreciate it. Pig feed is expensive, and i have 4 pigs to feed, 1 of them being pregnant. So, being able to cut that cost down would be great. Im already hitting local markets for produce they planed to throw away, so that alone has saved me hundreds.

    • @McGieHomesteadAdventures
      @McGieHomesteadAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Corn alone may not be a perfect diet, but it will definitely keep them alive and fat! You will need several acres of corn to feed four pigs all year. I’m glad you are keeping it going! I’ll be glad to answer any questions you might have but it sounds like you’re doing fine!

    • @Nerdskov
      @Nerdskov 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How many acres in a rough estimate would you need for let’s say 4 pig and 4 cows

    • @homesteadknowhow
      @homesteadknowhow ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Nerdskov Pigs eat approximately 800 pounds dry feed up to butcher time and the feed mix is often 60 or 70 % corn. That's about 450-550 pounds or 9-10 bushels of corn. Corn yields 150-200 bushels an acre. Playing it safe, 1/4 acre will grow 40 bushels of corn for 10 hogs. Not sure about cows.

  • @Tinyhomedeals
    @Tinyhomedeals 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for sharing. Its these details that show how farmers did it before feed stores where around. Now could you do a video on how much land you need to feed each animal? Ie each pig needs a 1/4 acre for feed year long which is corn clover posion ivy etc. Goats etc chickens etc.
    I'm way to new to understand why many homesteaders show how much feed they buy and go through for their livestock. If a farmer or homesteader gets their food from their land shouldn't their livestock do the same? Or is the ratio to big? Ie to grow out 5 pigs one needs 10 acres of feed etc?

    • @McGieHomesteadAdventures
      @McGieHomesteadAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great questions! I’m still learning these things so I cannot speak dogmatically about this. I feel like it would take a lot of land to feed all the animals and chickens and humans. I’m still trying to be on that level with only moderate success.

    Do the pigs eat the corn cobs when they get what corn is left on them?

      No, they do not eat the cobs.

      Yes. High carbon compost.

      I’ve changed since I made this video. Now I make my own corn into silage for the cows. It makes so much more feed. I buy corn for the pigs.

       you ever tried white hickory king? I tried it this year. Some ears over 12 inches long with a lot that grow 2 per stalk and plants 13 feet tall. It'd make a lot of good silage. Huge kernels with thin hard cobs. Makes a good roasting ear with butter and salt. Its a fine corn the only thing i don't like is its a little long season.

    why not give it to them the ear whole im sure they will eat the husk and cob. as a kid i would be sent to feed them just the fresh cob after scraping the kernals off for sweet corn tamales..

      We do give them the ear whole now. But they don’t eat the shucks or the cob. But the have no trouble cleaning off the corn!

    Funny how I got started hog hunting but they had some sweet corn they were growing on the farm and I was watching it grow until one week it looked like it got plowed from a distance and I ask, Ya got some of that sweet corn on the cob now? thinking how I could get some of that fresh grown corn on the cob
    He replied hell no feral hogs ate it all or most all of it!!!
    Went to take a close look and almost looked trampled down with what looked like a plow that went right thru it all and just scraps of cobs left on the ground
    Followed a trail to the pasture behind that garden and found half a field of pasture that looked like a back hoe had dug it all up
    Went back and asked who had been digging in the back pasture with a back hoe and he said no one, That's what them hogs do to that nut grass that grows out there
    First time I had ever seen up close the destructive damaged feral hogs do and it was so bad I grabbed my rifle and started try to hunt them down but could not find them
    After a while I realized they only came out at night so I got motion detector LED lights to help me hunt them and put them up on trees
    First night I saw the LED light come on hogs were there a bunch of them and I got out of the truck real slow had a line of sight on them under that LED light but it looked like I was too close to the truck so I side stepped very slowly one step to the right and they bolted never to be seen again the rest of the night
    After that night I thought, you know what, I'm going to make videos of this stuff and start a you tube channel after watching some you tube channels about hunting hogs that gave me a lot of tips about hunting them
    Some of my first videos were of launching refrigerant cans with tannerite and doing some fancy shooting as I had no way to film anything at night on them hog hunts until I got a thermal scope
    That shed full of corn you have reminded me of all of that sweet corn I missed out on because of them feral hogs I have been hunting to this very day with a vengeance
    Also made me think, ya know what? it might be easier to just raise some hogs instead of hunting them hard to get feral hogs LOL

      Ray Blackburn Outdoors That the truth! I have killed my share of wild hogs but thankfully not here! If they move into this country I will definitely be trapping them!
