Even J&K was given special status which was revoked recently. Sikhs were given option by britishers to have a separate country just like Hindustan and Pakistan back then, but sikh leaders back then trusted Hindustan leadership (Nehru, Patel..etc)and agreed to stay with Hindustan because of the promises and assurances like Special Status. Sikh leaders were warned by Mohammed Ali Jinah not to trust Hindustan leadership blindly. Jinah's words were "tum logo ne enhe gulam hi dekha hai, enhe raj kartey hue nahi dekha.", but Sikh leaders chose to stay with Hindustan. When after 1947 those promises were just not fulfilled, Sikh leaders asked Hindustan leadership about it, Nehru said "tab samay aur thay, aj samay kuch aur hai". Then it was time when Hindustan leaders started breaking Punjab and making provinces out of it and then there were demonstration to save what was left of Punjab. Demonstration were to keep Punjabi speaking areas together and not the other way around. The main motive of the Hindustan leadership was to dissolve the whole Punjab and assign those areas to other states, to practice control it's resources like water and fertile land.
Jaspal you should stay neutral. You should bring Sikhs with differing views also. How many Sikhs were killed by Punjab's Sikh police during 1980s-1990s. How many Hindus were killed during that period. Sikh police killed Sikhs in exchange for promotions and bonuses.
Khalistan is not popular among Sikhs living in America. Khalistan means land of pure; Sikhs at present are no where being pure. Punjab government and Punjab police is the most corrupt. Sikhs can't even run gurudawaras honestly. Sikhs need to get rid of corruption as a way of life, provide education and health services for all and Punjab will become Khalistan.
