I’m honestly more excited about this absolute gem than that two ton five million quid Bugatti Divo. Porsche Cayman is a great car but this is just so much cooler. The proper man to review one of the star cars of 2018. Brilliant as always Harry
Marcus Hogan the Cayman used to be easily my favorite modern sports car. But when Porsche had to drop those soulful normally aspirated flat-6s for turbocharged 4-pots I lost interest. No matter how good the handling, they’re just not the same without those wonderful engines.
David Datura yeah it’s weird alright. The Porsche four cylinder is more responsive and powerful than the Alpine’s yet is just so dull and lifeless. The Alpine’s seems gutsy and sounds quite rorty

One thing all the reviews seem to have in common is: it's a drivers car, it's meant to be driven and enjoyed. I surely enjoyed seeing you enjoying it, all the while giving your no-nonsense opinion. The French car companies - Renault, Citroën, Peugeot - are on a roll lately, great engines, pretty cars and SUVs, stunning colors, style, fuel economy. Add reliability and build quality. Good review.
I agree french cars are the more thoughtful choice than a 1.5 ton german car. Renault have always excelled in lightweight cars from clio, megane up to grand scenic all 100kgs lighter than competitors. Media tends to be german biased.
Interesting. I find that the French public are not a fickle public. They are very demanding and have no interest in paying through the nose for fripperies. Reliability and fuel economy is the deal and they will reward their domestic car industry.

I love the new light weight thinking. The styling is also very top shelf and individual. I can only image how fun this little ball of excitement is to live with.
Great review, this car shows why its more an everyday drive and fun. Using the 1.8 t megane rs engine it can still produce great mpg and power in a lightweight car but do 0.60 in around 4.5 seconds. Bought by people who enjoy driving without the ego boosting german badge.
My father own this car this car and its absolutely stunning. Lovely drive, super balanced, lovely interior (apart from the renault\dacia switchgear) theres also a fair bit of real carbon fibre trim inside.
Love Your correct review , I drove the Alpine 3 months ago and after drivin' half a mile , I immediately decided to reserve one. It's a real shame I'll still have to wait more than a year before it will be in My garage. I still don't know why everyone wants a manual, the Alpine certainly doesn't need it !
I love this car, something screams to me as a perfect daily car, I would still have love to see it with a manual box though Can’t wait to see more from them! Keep it up Harry!
Fantastic review Harry! This imo is such a sweetheart. It is truly an uncomplicated back to basics sports car which is so focused and has one mission. Light weight, fun to drive, and not overly powerful 👍🏾
Awesome review thanks for sharing! I adore this car and can’t wait to see one in the flesh. I have a 2016 TTS and a 1986 MR2 - so this appeals on many levels. The only problem I have is that I swore to myself my next new car would be a manual as I derive so much pleasure from this part of driving. I don’t love taking the TTS for a “drive” and I put it partly down to the DSG being boring. So ultimately torn on the Alpine and wonder if a manual Cayman or M2 would be more satisfying in the long run
he is exactly the target buyer, so you'd hope so. whether average wealthy buyers who just want a luxury " sportscar " will buy one over a porsche is the problem for alpine though...
@@TassieLorenzo People who just want the status will buy a Porsche. Car enthusiasts will buy this Alpine because it's scarce, fresh and original as he puts it, also this model is almost guaranteed to be a collector in a few decades.
Everything about this car seems amazing.... wish it came to USA :( Love the lightness, the color, the gearing, and especially the uniquely goofy French styling! *still wish it were a proper manual though, esp since it focuses on driving fun over numbers.
Thanks for reviewing this special car Harry. If there was a manual option I would be selling organs to get into ownership. Hoping Alpine succeed with this car and do an RS version with manual in the future.
*If you’re thinking that a manual gearbox would be lighter, chief engineer David Twohig argues that isn’t necessarily the case - having no clutch pedal and being able to engineer a floating centre console that didn’t need to house a manual transmission clawed back the kilos. It means this A110 will never be offered with a manual gearbox* Car Magazine, May 29th 2018, review Alpine A110.
Having now driven many cars with "flappy paddle" gearboxes I completely fail to see why people are still so obsessed with manual transmission. The racing fraternity have embraced paddle shifters and on some fast cars you really don't have time to take your hands off the wheel to change gear. Follow the racers - go paddles!
Love to see how enthusiast you are driving this car! Sometimes the audio is a bit low and it becomes hard to hear you -- just thought I'd mentionned this for your next great video. Thanks!
Still can't help but feel a bit sad for Alfa and their 4C which was quite ahead of its time, if not perfectly executed. Would love to see a big test of Alpine A110, Alfa 4C, Porsche Cayman and Lotus Evora. I love that "reasonable" power cars are getting attention again and hope things continue to develop in that direction - light weight, "medium" power, road cars not track cars. People with spare cash are so for choice these days, I still have EVO magazines from 2006/07, it's amazing how far we got.
Wonder how long until the owners develop a quick-release mod for that cover - surely they could have come up with something better which weighed similar.
Thanks, great film clip. Having owned an original 1970s A110 1300 S, this new Alpine A110 is the business. A lot of people, myself included, would buy this car because it is rare, well put together and thought out and because it isn’t a Porche!!
Good point with the transmission, i see lot of cars where the gear ratios are chosen just to reach 62mph quickest but lose very much of the pull on low speeds.
Fabulous bit of kit. Love how it looks and sounds, and love the lightweight brief. The price is punchy, though. Punchy enough that I’m going to be picky about the lack of a manual box. I alternate Caterham and Lotus and that’s no hardship, but if Alpine put a stick in this thing, I’m in. Meantime, I think Alpine might struggle a bit when the novelty wears off. Tough to pitch an expensive, stripped out, lightweight, 4 cylinder toy directly at enthusiasts who appreciate the brand’s legacy, and deny it the interaction of a manual that a decent percentage of the dedicated masochists (myself included) demand.
I love the look of this car, especially in the blue and from the sounds of it, it drives like it should too. Given the car's lightness, I wonder if Alpine has ever considered doing an electric version as a counterpoint to the forthcoming Tesla sports car.
That's exactly what I thought, but i wondered if it would make it a lot heavier. i would love this car if I was prepared to buy a gas powered car, but I'm not. Those days are done for me. Loved the review, thanks Harry.
@@grahambarnes7325 You're absolutely right, a battery pack would add a massive amount of weight, but my thinking was that if the rest of the car was designed to be as light as possible, like the Alpine is, then you wouldn't end up with the final electric version weighing as much as a Range Rover to get decent range.
@@adrianchell Yes maybe, especially if the battery technology can improve - which i understand it may do very soon. Or perhaps I'm reading the less credible internet articles!
Harry, love your channel. Every time I watch an episode I'm hoping you have added a clip on mic. Or something so that I can hear you over the noise of the car. One of these days I hope.
Alpine just got one thing wrong to me: the lack of a manual is the only reason why is off my list. Knowing that manuals are lighter than autos they could have shaved a few more kilos and rub it on Porsche whose cars keep getting heavier and heavier a result of a brand whose positioning has moved into luxsuvury (...) vehicles from what used to be previously a brand of sports cars...
That's just not true with modern automatics, at least, that's what Alpine say. The cost of development and lack of weight saving, plus market preferences made auto-only the most sensible choice for a car with a relative small production run.
drive one before you judge it. you will be surprised. I know a few people who have moved from 981s to this and love it. I had a manual 981 GTS prior to this and as much a the Cayman is a better car in almost every objective way, the Alpine is tons more involving and lots more fun.
Agreed in terms of technical driving pleasure - there´s a lot to be said for the mechanical symphony of a proper manual shift, heel & toeing that when you get it all right, feels bloody wonderful. These paddle shifts are for speed yes, but there´s more to road driving than just being as fast as possible (that´s for racing) & for that, they should bring back manuals...
I absolutely love this little thing. I wish I could afford one. Such a cool, small and light sports car. I really hope they can survive the harsh competition that is the automotive sector and can develop more cars in the future
This car really needs a manual gearbox option. Now I'm not one of those people who thinks manual is superior in all cars in all situations, because clearly that is nonsense, but I just prefer a manual transmission.
Renault does not do good manuals, I'm afraid. Even the Megane Trophy-R manual is just an ok-ish gearbox. Porsche's one is godlike. So I'd take the EDC paddles every time, since they do feel nice than a sloopy manual, just because "it's a manual bro!".
This car interests me enormously. I’d already read about it’s somewhat awkward gestation period, so for the finished result to be this good is great news. I am old enough to remember the original and saw a perfect example last year in Prince Rainer’s collection at the museum in Monte Carlo. Brilliant that there’s a genuine alternative for enthusiasts. The review is spot on Harry, as always. In fact, I watched it twice in a row.
Err.. that is EXACTLY the same effort for both cars to get to the engine from the top... maybe you wanna check out 1-2 Boxster DIY videos. And with the Porsche, you flip the seats and there is another such panel, where you can change pulleys, belt etc... air filters, you peel back the trunk carpet and there they are. For sparks plugs, you take the rear wheels off. I have not seen how this is done for the Alpine, but I imagine it will be very similar. There is no problem doing any of these jobs yourself, not that much different than with "regular" cars.
Holy Mayonnaise Alpine any day of the week. The 4C was a beautiful car however it was (apparently, never driven one) a big let down. Shame really as Alfa could’ve made it truly great just like the A110.
Great video as always, Harry. And a car worthy of the old Colin Chapman quote: "Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere."

Loved the ‘ slip of the toe’. Great review, Harry, thank you.
Own. One since june .... its superb !!!!
The car looks fabulous, too bad it doesnt have a manual option.
Best car reviews on TH-cam. Period.
Great looking machine, I reckon the 3 'dislikes' were from folk who wanted the video to last longer than 16 minutes.
Think this is the first vid I've seen you smile from beginning to end....cool car worthy of the name.
It's got two clutches and a motor/electronics/hydraulics physically moving the gears and clutches for you. It's impossible to be lighter.
drive one before you judge it. you will be surprised. I know a few people who have moved from 981s to this and love it. I had a manual 981 GTS prior to this and as much a the Cayman is a better car in almost every objective way, the Alpine is tons more involving and lots more fun.
My only disappointment with this car was the lack of a manual option too. But it’s not enough to put me off this little gem though.
I would compare this more to the Alpha 4C than the Cayman or TTRS.
Alfa
Robert Cook yes, my mistake.
and evora
alfa 4c looks better... and in my opinion has more character. Alpina looks more composed.
Yep , Alfa looks good but drives like C***
Words do not describe how envious I am of the access to this car that you guys on the other side of the pond have.
5 dislikes!!! Wtf is to dislike about this video. It’s exactly what the title suggests presented perfectly. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That's the board of VW Group...don't worry, we all know only petrolheads would get this car. The corporates can go f*** themselves 😀
people from other shows
For starters, the audio quality sucks.
B Scooter great review
Ugly car
You enjoyed that more than the R8 Harry what a cracking car they have come back with 😍
This car really needs a manual gearbox option.
3:58 Just try and get to a Cayman's (or worse Boxster) motor, you better have some tools handy because forget it otherwise.
Best to just put it on a lift.
Err.. that is EXACTLY the same effort for both cars to get to the engine from the top... maybe you wanna check out 1-2 Boxster DIY videos.
This is my favorite car channel. You’re an awesome guy Harry!
Alfa Romeo 4c or Alpine?
Thanks for the review
Holy Mayonnaise Alpine any day of the week. The 4C was a beautiful car however it was (apparently, never driven one) a big let down. Shame really as Alfa could’ve made it truly great just like the A110.
Yes, it's sad that alfa didn't make it great to drive( However, I believe it was a marketing success, for the US market at least.
US roads are like pool tables ! Over Here in Belgium The roads are C**** and the Alfa drove likewise !
Fantastic looking car. I have a 4c with the Alfaworks suspension pack and now handles absolutely fine.
I like it but i'd totally prefer an Alfa 4c!
Great video as always, Harry. And a car worthy of the old Colin Chapman quote: "Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere."
It comes with some extra oil? That's not a good sign lol
Not enough oil
Its French, clearly it has a drinking problem
Of course they're juniper berries they're juniper bushes!
All Renaults come with this little complimentary bottle of oil. Handy.
I understand homosexuals carry complimentary bottles of anal lube, does that make them french, or just Renault owners ?
Well done Harry, uploading this right after the R8 you show to the public what is wrong and is right in a sports car.
Nice car definitely. Would be great to see an electric version of this.
The Legend that is, Harry Metcalf. Respect.
How can you talk about light weight cars without mentioning Alfa Romeo 4C? It's 890 kgs! The cockpit is a carbon monocoque and weighs 60 kgs.
Beautful car , but have You ever driven one ?
Yes I have. Have you?
Yes, but driving for a long time it gets really cramped and the handling wasn't too good on crappy roads, wich in Belgium We have a lot of ! Don't get Me wrong ! It's a good car for track but for every day use it is not worth looking into !
Well, at least I'm sure you'll agree with me that it should be on a list of light-weight cars?
No doubt about that!!
this car is so great i hope lots of people buy it to support the idea/platform of light and dynamic sports cars.
Shouty shirt !! So French !!!! Nice touch !!!!!!
If this was offered in the US I would have already been on the waiting list. Alas, I'll have to enjoy it from afar. Great vid as always Harry!
