      Hey, could someone check my upper body workout, please?
      I'm not a beginner I went to the gym when I was around 14 but I stopped after 1.5 years because I had almost no results.
      I now know it's because I didn't eat enough and I didn't use progressive overload.
      I want to start again and I made an upper body workout I will use an upper and lower split and go to the gym 4x a week.
      Reps: 8-12
      Sets: 3
      Bench Press
      dumbbell chest press incline
      Bicep Curl
      Tricep Curl (don't know the name of the exercise)
      Cable Tricep Extension
      Barbell bent-over row
      Lat pulldown
      Bar Dips
      Pullups
      Lateral Raises
      Should I add or remove any exercises? Should I change the order of the exercises?
      Thank you,
      - th-cam.com/users/shortsriGTbWBVZGE (the excercise I don't know the name of you can see this youtuber doing it after the squat)

    my first time I went to a gym, I was so anxious and awkward, I decided to only workout after my evening shifts at work, at 1am, so that I can be alone in the 24h gym. It took me months to gain enough confidence to go mid day. It was absolutely for no reason though. You dont need to feel bad for anything. NO ONE cares about what you do or what you look like, and i mean that in the best possible way. And if you're not sure about something, almost everyone is super kind and helpful. I always say to people don't overstay your first visits. Don't think that you have to do long 90 minute sessions when you first start. You can start small 30 min sessions because in the long term it is the consistency that matters. You can build up session length later as going to the gym becomes more consistent.

      Yeah but sometimes the personal trainers there just want to burn people out, setting unrealistic routines for beginners, I hate that because people leave thinking it's a damn torture when excercise should be a vital part of your life and there's no reason you can't make it fun

    • @SaryM29
      @SaryM29 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@paule.2687 I remember when I joined a gym first time. Now, to give some context out, I had always been practicing martial arts, so I wasn't sedentary and had good cardio, but I was still pretty weak, as I had never had resistance training before, and because that's my body type, really (5'7'', 120lbs).
      Anyway, since you adjust the weights in the machines, that was pretty ok to me, but the trainer there also gave me some routine exercises that I can't even remember now, but like, I honestly knew right off the bat I'd never be able to do that.
      I don't even remember it all, but let's say you just joined the gym, and to finish off your training you have to do:
      1min of pushups
      1min of abdominals
      1min of bridge
      At a decent rythm, there were also some free weight exercises in the middle and some other abdominal variations, of course, I just don't remember exactly how many exercises were there, but I'd say about 7 or 8, all of that 5 times. Even if I could do it, with the amount of exercises, I believe it'd take me around 40 minutes to 1 hour, considering I maintained a decent rythm throughout all the reps
      Edit: Also, forgot to mention this whole part was literally only "the finishing part", by the time I got there, I had already went through a whole 40min+ training schedule on the machines and done some free weight exercises, and after that I was still meant to do some cardio before leaving
      I stopped going because of other reasons, but at the very least, it's not like I'd be "traumatized" by that or something, because I already had a good notion of how hard the exercises were, as I had done them before in martial arts, just not in those intensities, but I believe it could be pretty bad some other people, which honestly might not be able to do a whole set of those exercises

      @paule.2687 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@SaryM29 Now that I'm reading your comment an idea came to me, and it's that maybe some trainers do that intentionally, because gyms are a bussiness and they kinda want more people to join than people actually going, so they discourage beginners with mad routines

    As a gym veteran my advices are: You will feel uncomfortable from going to the gym maximum 1 month after your first day but trust me later on you will love the fact that you didn't give up. Focus on proper form not on kgs on the machine or on the barbell. Proper form> more kgs. Before buying supplements focus on your nutritions. Very important stay hydrated! Your muscle cells are mostly glucose and water so eat healthy carbs like rice potatoes and drink as much water as possible my best advice is 35 ml per kg. The protein is very important too but be careful with the fats they are essential in a healthy meal if you don't overconsume them.

    • @Postermaestro
      @Postermaestro ปีที่แล้ว

      The muscle stores glycogen, which are chained glucose molecules, which is pure sugar. What makes you think the muscle cares whether you got them from white rice or table sugar? That's mostly about appetite control and nutrients. Although white rice probably doesn't contain a whole lot of that anyway. Also, drink when you're thirsty. You don't drink x ml/kg of bodyweight. It all depends on climate, activity level, metabolism etc. Larger and more active people will drink more, no surprises there.

    Going to the gym the first time is like starting a new job. The first day you're just learning the layout and where everything is. I don't go in with the mindset that I'm gonna do a full workout. Anytime I've switched gyms I always do the same thing, the first time I walk in I go straight to the treadmill. This gives you time where can just look around and get a mental picture of the layout. Then I'll pick a piece of equipment that I'm familiar with and go to that so I can get a different view of the layout, then maybe I'll walk to the bathroom, then maybe to the dumbell rack, the whole time just building a picture in my mind of where all the equipment is. The purpose for me on the first day isn't to do a workout, but just to familiarize myself with the new place, then the next time I go I'll be able to have a better plan of what I'm going to do.

    I started on June 14th 2022 and i stayed in the cardio area for almost a month. I was extremely intimidated and i had no confidence. But after a while i started doing 30 minutes of weightlifting and 30 minutes of cardio. The problem was that i was limiting my time in certain areas. I went through different techniques and time arrangements until i found the best one for me. Don't worry about the time you're spending at the gym unless you're resting for an unnecessary amount of time between sets. I spend an average of 2 hours in the gym now, all of that is weightlifting but i do my cardio at home, that being walking and swimming. If you are new to going to the gym, just know that you will want to quit, but it requires lots of dedication and discipline to keep going. Remember why you started and keep that in mind.

    *as an advanced lifter i wud advice beginner to start with the bench ,squat, and deadlift. and practice doing them in excellent form. weight does not matter. form and execution matters more. the weight will come just be patient. its a marathon not a sprint. stay consistent and work hard.*

    good timing, gonna go to the gym next week since I want to make my progress more consistent. My goal is to improve my strength to be able to progress a sport such as parkour or martial arts tricking, I'm not here for health and looks necessarily.
    2 years ago I've been to the gym for 2 months, I wish I would've started doing parkour around that time since I had a lot of strength.
    My biggest challenge rn is finding a workout program, I need to prioritize lower body more than anything, since tricking is a lower-body dominant sport and in parkour, I'll need to take on impact more than climb on stuff. I still need upper body strength tho. I am also slightly scared on figuring out how to use the barbell for squats or deadlifts, since when I was at the gym, I only did machine stuff, dumbbell stuff and the barbell bench press and that's it.

    One thing that I think the video missed is to remind people that the gym is not only for the looks. I first started the gym to have a healthier life and fix my knee. 1y later and I'm still going on strong, went for a healthy lifestyle and stayed for all the benefits it brought me (trust me, the mindset changes not only your body but your life as a whole, for the better).
    If you're a beginner, keep it up! The best step is always the one that gets you out of the couch

    My first experience was in weight training, really just messing around, then slowly in the semester I start going everyday, not just every A day for class, this eventually got me into powerlifting and Have yet to take a massive break from it besides deloads. When I take a deload now it sucks because all I wanna do is crank out some heavy deadlift singles.

    When to the gym for the first time before I even saw this video. I went in with screenshots from some TH-cam video with a all body workout plan. I originally planned on warming up on the treadmill then jumping into the workout. I hear this is a generally a good idea and you should always do some light walking for a few minutes. Unfortunately my worst nightmare happened. When I was walking into the gym I was followed by two kids who went to my local high school and were the same age as me (17). 99% of the people in the gym won’t judge you, I went into it knowing this. But I also went into it knowing how kids my age think. I ended up getting nervous and put myself into a run/Jog for two and a half miles, much much more then I intended. Once I kinda pushed myself past that I put on my brave boy pants and entered the weight side of the gym, the same direction the two kids went in. This was my first time seeing the gym so I walked around a bit learning what the place looked like. I looked at the workout and started. Boy I must of looked clueless… and not one person cared enough to notice. When I started walking towards a empty smith machine the biggest guy I’ve ever seen approached me and APOLOGIZED, to ME as he said he was just using it and hadn’t had the opportunity to wipe it yet. I said no big deal and made some small talk while he cleaned it. I mentioned how it was my first time and he said congratulations and if I needed any help to call him over. I knew I would need it as the smith machine had intimidated me. I had no clue what form or weights I should put on and understood this was a perfect opportunity. He coached me through what to do for the first time and it showed me how genuinely nice he was. I’ve gone back a few times since and while I might notice co-workers or the occasional classmate I don’t let it bug me. I mind to myself and do what I came to do. Definitely haven’t been going enough to see progress but I’m glad I took this first step. I told you my story so that you won’t break down the second something akward pops up. Every video I ever watch tells me nobody is there to judge. I am here to tell you that they are mostly right. But when it does happen that you know you are being watched, to relax. It will all work out and you will feel better about yourself after.

    My number 1 best advice for someone going to the gym who is afraid, go in the morning. In the morning is when all the older people are there, and the people who take the gym seriously. If you go after work at 5 to 8pm is when you'll see the "bros" the instagram girls, etc and for those few hours it's a madhouse.
    Also if you see an adult who is clearly an advanced lifter, don't look at them and be intimidated. Odds are they are the nicest guy in the gym and would help you with any questions you have.
