I remember this one! It was on rerun in June of 1984!! Still remember thats when I got into another Athens Georgia band called Love Tractor. Also got on to the Ramones on this show! Nickelodeon rocked!!
I started loving REM’s music in high school when Reckoning came out, so I bought Murmur as well. They were the greatest escape of amazingly good music when everything on the radio was either New Wave or classic rock. I saw the Reckoning tour at the Greek in Los Angeles, and the Fables tour in the POURING rain at the Costa Mesa fairground. Michael was so shy back then - he didn’t talk to the audience at all. I’m glad he realized people loved them and what he sang and did was important since he had a platform to speak to millions of people. Such a great band, and I am so lucky to have had their music in my life.
There was a video of the full episode on YT which has unfortunately been removed. IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE I CAN VIEW IT PLEASE COMMENT HERE. THANKS! 1983. I was one of the girls behind the host in blue. I was 14 years old. Local NYC area teens between 14-17 yrs old. This was a show on Nicklelodian filmed at what is now known as The Ed Sullivan Theatre (renamed by Letterman).
Unreal. They have only released one album (Murmur) at that stage and would have been working on the second (Rexkoning). They are so respectful of the audience questions, direct and humble. Superb people.
Haha, they were just kids here. Who would've known they'd become one of the most renowned rock bands of the late 20th and early 21st centuries! Michael Stipe hadn't lost his southern accent yet, haha!
Such genuinely nice guys. Unlike so many of the pretentious, competitive, arrogant, judgemental alt rock bands that came along in the alternative 90s and later.
Ahhh...the good old days...back before MTV started playing rap crap and messed music up. And before American Idol and The Voice that makes paying one's dues through hard work and dedication a thing of the past.
Boy, I wish I was young again watching this brings back memories of great times.
I got home from school in time to see this! Long ago in a galaxy far away;)
Wow, this is a great little snippet of one of the best rock bands ever! Everyone is so young and back when things seemed simpler and not divisive.
Really nice very early interview.
MS was 23 ( same age as I was)
BB & MM were 25
PB was 27

I love them. So nonjudgmental of other scenes and style. So unified as a band in purpose.
Awesome clip. Someone build me a Time Machine!
Love the Pylon reference!

The white head band and sunglasse on that chick are classic 80s.

Was this the first use of the term "alternative"?
I thought the interviewer was really good here, the kids were so innocent and well, the band too.

Buck was a stud
So pretentious. Gag.
What’s pretentious about it? To me they come across as pretty humble and sincere.
