They never broke up on bad terms, they decided that they were done with R.E.M. so they've always remained friends. Much like when Bill left they stayed friends with him. They nearly broke up after Around the Sun. Accelerate and Collapse Into Now were the redemption from that and they signed off on a high. I always loved the ending to Collapse Into Now, the way that if you played it on repeat the last track loops into the first. Much like R.E.M. it signalled the end, but not the permanent end. It keeps going, much like they have as friends.

The parts about Iggy Pop and Michael Stipe not really wanting "to be" Iggy made me think. Even though Iggy/James is one of the musicians I most look up to, he's probably lowest on the list of heroes I would choose to become, or even be like. Strangely enough, I really think that's a higher honor than if I did want to emulate him.
But, back to Mike and Mike here. I just love the few long-form interviews we have with either of them. They're both so interesting. Stipe tends to need about 15 minutes before he lets himself fully open up, but when he gets over his shyness, you can really see the genius behind all those years of great music. And Mills is just pure charisma and composure (and genius himself) from the moment they hit record.
And finally, I just have to say that I'm ruling it "impossible" that Monster (Monster!) is 25 years old. It's still "the new R.E.M. album" to me!

The most eagerly anticipated REM album that they released and one that was made with touring in mind. A great opening track with WTFK that you could just blast out as loudly as possible, then you had the contrast with songs such as 'Tongue' and 'I Don't Sleep I Dream'. I always thought 'Strange Currencies' was going to be a bigger hit than it actually was.

I really like Michael's new single collaboration Your Capricious Soul. It is simple but builds sonic tension and when the end comes it feels like it is going to take off in a great outburst of instruments but then abruptly ends. It kind of hurts my mind similar to someone playing only 7 notes in an octave. You are eagerly waiting to hear that last note and nothing. Anyway it would be nice if Michael were to release a handful of new music. I know REM isn't going to happen again. Love their music ever since I was in elementary school and got to see them live on 5 different tours starting with the Green Tour in 89. They were the 1st to really get me obsessed with music and lyrics that seemed to mean something more.

Monster tour I caught in Atlanta Omni 95 and had just seen the Dead there and was behind soundboard and was worried the volume was too low so like the obnoxious guy I am I went up to the soundboard and told the guy and man it was the coolest thing ever he turned it wayyyy up it really made the show for me. What's the frequency kenneth great rager opener.

Great band....one of my favourite....there has always been R.E.M. in one form or another on my walkman or in my record collection...
This video is awesome...love the anekdote of Mike Mills where he admits looking forward playing 'Star 69' during a gig...

When I was a kid, I also thought that INXS was pronounced "inkses". I also called RR (XING) a "zing" in my ignorance!

The drummer said "i want to ROCK! We don't, I'm out"
We TOTALLY have to thank Bill Berry for this.

It's strange isn't it because he has always given the impression that he'd rather stay at home and after his aneurysm his distaste for being on the road was one of the main reasons for quitting.

"Crush with Eyeliner seems to be about an obsessive".
The whole album is first person character piece stories about obsession. Or lust and love as they used to be called in a less sexless age.

I'd never heard the mix of "Let Me In" without the keyboards in the background... I definitely prefer that (the album) version. The keyboards add such a haunting part to such an emotional song.
