The Sound on this little radio is fantastic. Its also sports a 4" internal ferrite antenna to help bring some AM DX goodness to the ears.
The features I like best about this radio:
The Grip! yes, it has a grips on the back...too cool for school.
10cm speaker, is of great quality and has a similar sound to the Sony 506.
AC/DC powered...never use up batteries again. Bonus!
AM reception is amazing...I found many distant stations on different occasions using this radio.
FM reception is in DX territory, finding stations that I have not been able to before.
The Handle...yep, the handle doubles as an angled stand.
Glow in the Dark Dial...yeah, its a gimmick, but a cool one.
Features I wish it had or were improved upon:
Headphone jack......yeah.....earphone jack. Speechless.
A lighted dial, not glow in the dark. Activates with AC...why not?
A better calibrated dial, or maybe a digital display model in the future?
Overall, your getting amazing performance and versatility for a decent price. Probably one of the best portable radio deals out there.
Thanks for watching!

Just received two of these; one for me, one to give as a gift. Nice little radio. Good RX on both bands, good sound quality on both talk and music. I was a bit hesitant over the digital tuner; I prefer an analog unit, but this had every other feature I wanted. This tunes easily, and I get every local station.
Gave my wife one, she's had for a couple of years now. Great little radio. She carries it from room to room, and loves it. Good sound for the price. Only had one problem....after some time, the volume rheostat become scratchy and has static. The rheostat gets dust in it and needs cleaning and lubricating. You can buy some CRC...QD Electronic Cleaner with a small spray tube, and spray it directly into where the volume knob is located. Work it in a little, and it should do the job.
I have the same problem : the volume knob turns from mute to loud within millimeters . Otherwise it's a very good radio with a clear , strong sound .
Unfortunately, a common problem with Panasonic portable radios..
Thank you Mr. Todderbert for all your Excellent Reviews. I just purchased a Panasonic RF-2400D. I am very happy with the purchase, as with 5 other radios that you reviewed. Another Fan.. Jim
You're Welcome Jim, glad to help :)
Just bought one so I can listen to the news in morning instead of listening through my big system and nice to have a little radio for on the go listening like on the deck . Thanks for the review
I just purchased for $24.99 on Amazon. 7/20/2022, Wednesday. Gratitude for review.
The DSP processing in this is interesting: it rejects the omni-present powerline static at low AM better than other radios..very nice. A medium-power channel occupies 2-3 'slots' so you can rock it away from a strong channel, like analog. Weird 'squelching effects' just before sunrise and just after sunset, but it can be tweeked in peak DX hours very nicely. Sweet sound., sophisticated noise processing. Great contractor's / camper's radio, working in places where you don't know local stations.
Shows you what advanced DSP can do.
Just got this radio. Pulling in stations from 700 miles away on am dial at night. Reminds me of old school General Electric radio analog. Miss that radio
Just bought this radio today in Vancouver. I really like it!
Awesome, I still have mine. Have to dig it out now and jam the FM :)
@@todderbert Tonight is an 80's flashback jam on 104.3 looking forward to it on my new radio!
Awesome! I'm an 80's teen...loved making my mixed tapes :)

Your review guided me to getting the radio, I love it, I can get this far away classical station I could barely get before (only at night at that) Thank you so much for your review!
Oh my word the reception on that little guy is superb!
A tip: watch movies on Kaldrostream. Me and my gf have been using it for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Quentin Kayden Yea, I have been using Kaldrostream for since november myself :D
@Quentin Kayden Definitely, been watching on kaldroStream for since december myself =)
Wow!! I remember my first Panasonic Radio I bought in the mid 1970s RF-1150, It had that am Gyro Antenna, I wish I still had it. Also I remember listening to the CBS Radio Mystery Shows, On a Panasonic flip number clock radio, Circa 1978.. later..
Shai Will I remember listening to the CBS radio mystery theater as a kid at night. I loved that show and some of them scared the crap out of me. Good times.
I had a RF-1150 for a few days, what cool radio..it just needed to much work. I remember CBS Radio Mystery and Black Muesum...cool stuff!
After watching your review I picked up three of these as emergency radios and yes it's an awesome radio compared to the junk I was using I mean even the volume pot wheel is straight and solid. 👍👍👍
My antenna broke off above the hinge. Where can I find a replacement antenna?
Just bought this to bring along to the drive in theater!
Great presentation he takes his time he breaks it down he Pampers the radio thank you Chuck for his gift 🎁 overall he's one of the best he goes in he break it down one plus one equals two one of a kind five stars.
Todderbert lives in an amazing radio cross-roads, that's why this thing picks up everything and anything! It;s a fun rig, still. Nice tone on shaky stations.
The tuner seems to be Silicon Labs Si4831 with mechanical tuning. All Silicon Labs tuners are outstanding in FM, but for AM, they are not better than analog tuners. Sony remains the undisputed king in AM reception. Sony's CXA1129 used in SRF-18 and SRF-59 are excellent portable DXers. Sony continues to use the older CXA1019 chip in ICF-26/36 and they are average only. The SRF-18 picks up WCBS 880 here in Canada 700 kms away while the SiLabs struggles to keep the volume stable.
Thank you. Good information.
Can you recommend a Silicon Labs / Sony portable radio with digital tuner? I really need something that will catch AM channels indoors for my mother. Nothing I currently have catches AM indoors, not even when placed at the window. We are in Northern NJ, trying to catch NYC stations. We live on a mountain and we have direct line of sight of NYC skyline. Most transmitters in NYC are located on Empire State Building which is visible from our living room window, but we can't catch those AM channels any more. I'm pretty sure that ten years ago I could listen to 1010 WINS AM channels indoors on my alarm clock radio but not anymore.

I’m very late to the conversation, but have you tried an external AM antenna with the radio? Select-A-Tenna and the Terk Advantage are two well known options. I have a Terk Advantage. Works very well; however, the tuning dial on the Terk is not easy to see especially in low light.
@@totallyfrozen I will try out one of these. I'm looking at options of an attic antenna as well. Thanks for the tip 🙏🏼
Thanks Todderbert, for the channel and all the great reviews. After watching this review, I’m going to buy this radio. I think I only own 1 other older Panasonic radio, I always seem to favor Sony, Sangean , Ge and Magnavox along with a few others like Kiato and Radio Shack. All that being said I am a Sony fanboy. I was looking to get the the ICF P-36 or the ICF-506 to my collection, but I have decided on this Panasonic. Thanks
This is a fun little office or bedroom radio on the AM for sure.
I've had this Panasonic for years. Good solid radio, huge speaker, great sound. I got another for my car so I wouldn't have to run the car radio (and drain the car battery) when I'm parked for long periods (lunch hour, at the park, etc). I still need a portable for when I go hiking (I prefer analog tuning). Thanks for vid. Keep em coming!!
Hiking has a lot lower noise than at-home! Great opportunity. My favorite hiker is the Sangean DT-200X. CCPocket is more DX, but the DT-200X has a cleaner sound. The 2400 is my current home-bedside. Easy to tune, once I put paint dots over my favorite big stations.
Why when i connect headphones the 1 ear doesnt have sound?, tested on multiple earphones
setup as Left Channel only. made for single earpieces.

CFCO in Chatham, Ontario, Canada is a Country music station on 630 kHz (in C-Quam AM Stereo!).
Just ordered one on Amazon after buying a disappointing Jensen SR-50 digital radio from Target. It wouldn’t turn on AT ALL. I thing when I tried to use a AC/DC adapter (not included), the package said use a 120 volt. I did and heard a second of static with nothing on the screen, and that was it. Tried batteries, nothing. Followed instructions, still nothing. I’m going to return it. Hope this radio delivers a quality product, decent reception, and decent sound quality. I got four pocket radios, all of which I reviewed and one NOAA radio. My dad said why don’t you just get one radio that’s good quality, instead of a bunch of mediocre ones? I got a Target gift card for my birthday and wanted to get that radio, again disappointed. So I’ll return it and use that money for this guy. (By the way great video, all of your videos are great, great channel, and I’m subscribed.
Thank you TopFin. Let me know how you like this radio. It has some great audio on the FM band. The reception is decent on the AM band due to its larger internal ferrite antenna.
I got it yesterday and I love it. It has great AM reception, awesome sound, a nice, smooth tuning knob, and a AC power cord! Love it. The only thing I don’t liked about it is that it only has audio for one ear (the left ear) when using earbuds. But this radio has been on Amazon since 2001 and I only intend on using this radio without earbuds, do to it’s nice audio and big size. I give it 4.5 stars out of 5.
Thanks for the great reviews! It would be interesting to hear your opinion about Grundig Music 60. It would also be interesting to compare it with Panasonic RF-2400D and Sony ICF-506.
Looking for a good gift for my dad for Father’s Day. Something that’s perfect for listening to sports outside. Of the portable radios I can find on the internet, this seems to be by far the most popular and most well reviewed and highly rated one money can buy. However with all the modern technology we have it seems so simple, but I just can’t find a portable radio that has rds and can display song titles, artist, station name etc. if I can find a radio of this quality with that feature it’s a done deal.
Sangean PR-D15 may be worth looking into: th-cam.com/video/CgxiKPW4ELc/w-d-xo.html
A friend of mine got one of these. But she's sending it back. It looks cute it looks like a decent radio. I'll have to watch more reviews about this one but so far it sounds good.
I've had this radio for a year and I love it.
Just got this radio off of Amazon for a radical cool price $30 and I'm jamming to it right now!!!
The RF-2400, no ‘D’, had a silver colored tuning background. The RF-2400 would eventually break down and I think the volume dial was the culprit. It would no longer play at low or moderate volume and turning the volume dial would create a lot of static. Anyone else have this model and experience this?
We bought this for my mother in law, who is vexing the other residents in the care facility. I purchased the radio I use in my kitchen, and outdoors when gardening. Well, I goofed a bit when buying headphones for her (she keeps everything too loud)...Anyway, we couldn't figure out why there was only sound in one headphone side until I read your overview and review Problem solved...she'll use the headphones and get sound in her "good ear", because we know she won't use an earphone. Thank you for your overview.
Todderbert, I've noticed that most radio reviewers generally say good-but-vague things about the speakers' audio quality of most portable radios that they review/test. Do you have some experience with a few portable/small radios that particularly stand out for their much-better-than-average audio quality, that you can tell us about? Or, maybe better yet, you could pick the best-sounding 6 to 12 radios out of your collection and do an "Audio Shoot-out" as a TH-cam program on your channel, based on aural quality and maximum volume of each radio. (Be sure to use some high and low tone music and voices in your shoot-out.) I know this would (probably) not be a scientific test, but your opinion would still make this an interesting and valuable program for the rest of us. Just a suggestion ...
Out of the radios I own, only a few stand out as sounding well. They are usually the bigger portables with bass and treble controls. Only a few smaller portables do I like for their sound quality. The older Vibra for example. Having a tone control switch is nice. I like the bright nature of the Sony P26's speaker. While others prefer the Sangean's SR-35...which I like on FM but not on AM. Also recently the Sony 306, that one sounds incredible for a small portable..now remember I'm not into bass at all. That all being said, the GE Superadio and the CCrane EP I own are my favorites. I don't turn my radios up loud so I will not be able to tell how they fill a room. I have to be careful because of tinnitus, it worsens with loud noises and bass type tones. Maybe in the future, I can make a video. I would want a better stereo microphone and camera setup first though.
@@todderbert I just bought a SONY ICF-306 yesterday. I am happy with it's compact size (home use), operates with 2xAA batteries and it's blacklist and neat yet elegance

Hello, is there any difference in reception between black⚫ and silver colour variation of Panasonic RF 2400d, because I few days ago purchased Black colour model but I return this for not good FM reception. Please sort out my confusion. Thanks regard. Kajal Mukherjee.
There is the RF-2400 without the D. It is an all analog model. I have not tested that, but the D is a DSP based Radio and they tend to receive FM well.
I'm not what it is but when you get to the 108 end of the dail on a good reception radio you will hear that high pitch sound, jet stream I don't know exactly what it is but was there on that radio.

Sir, my friend want to by radio which will be best among sony icf 19 or Panasonic rf 2400. Please give me suggestion.
I personally like the Sony ICF-19. Better sounding speaker to my ears, and runs 400+ hours on a set of D batteries.
630 might be CFCO (Chatham, Ontario)
Thanks it gets lots of AM stations but if the dial is not accurate it will bug me.
The best analog dial accuracy on a portable radio has been the older GE Superadio. If not that then maybe a digital radio might be what your looking for.

Kajal, could I know where you have purchased this radio and price? thanks!
Todd, I exposed the tuning panel strip to strong sunlight but in the dark it did not illuminate the panel. Does yours work better?
It is not glow in the dark. A small flashlight would help.
@@todderbert Thanks for the reply. I got confused because the box mentions a "glowing dial panel". However, the instructions simply say "luminous bar", which is accurate, and the bar does have markings that help one to tune in the dark. When Einstein came to America he remarked on the beautiful design of ordinary consumer products (he had worked in a patent office). Although not made domestically, this radio is all about "form follows function", and I like how the on/off function and band selection all work on the same switch, with a simple mechanical indicator. And the color scheme of silver, orange, and blue is pleasing. Also, the grips on the back, which you mentioned, are great.
Please Mr todderbert, I want knowing (ICF 19 vs RF 2400D)
Which one is best compare to reception, sensitivity, *Am performance, audio performance . I expect from you sincere reply
The ICF19 has better audio, similar reception on the bands being they are both decent performers with their equally sized ferrite antennas and DSP tuning. The 19 runs on D-Cell batteries only, and will run over four hundred hours on a set of three. The Panasonic plugs into the wall using 110Volts. Though I'm not fond of it's audio. Here is the 19 review: th-cam.com/video/sRpiDbIx7vc/w-d-xo.html
I was thinking this radio would do it for me but then saw the info about the headphone jack and passed. Such a nice design to have a headphone jack issue like that. I use headphones at night. So I decided to look at Retekess and Sangean.
I can’t figure out how to turn it on
did you discuss headphone jack? Mine only works on one channel out of the box. Should that be happening?
Yes that is normal operation. why they went old school, I have no idea.
Got one the way, I thought it was analog tuning so I could listen to stations in other states late at night on AM.
The country station on 630 AM is probably CFCO from Chattham, Ontario about 350 miles from you. The station playing Barracuda may have been Milwaukee's WRIT 95.7 FM.

Are these radios superior to boom boxes when it comes to sound quality, reception, and volume that are around the same price range?
You have to figure what will they sacrifice for the price when comparing. Typically I have found these DSP radios to be great on FM and AM reception and have decent audio quality. You will get more bass and fullness of sound with the dual speaker boom boxes because of their larger cabinet designs. So there will be some trade offs.

Your Welcome Scouter Duff, glad you watched the video. Let me know if you get one and your thoughts.
I just bought the SONY ICF-306 yesterday and am very satisfactory with it. After seeing your comment that the Panasonic "Much better performance than Sony 306" I am a bit frustrated. Although according to many reviews that Panasonic RF-2400D performs better than the SONY ICF-306, the reason I still choose SONY is that I love it's appearance. Black plastic seems longer lasting than silver plated plastic. Another benefit of SONY is that it runs with two AA batteries, compare to Panasonic that it runs with four AA batteries. AC powered is a good benefit of Panasonic compare to SONY but I am OK without AC powered.
@@ander1651 Don't be frustrated.
Panasonic has a pretty dynamic sound, but sound quality overall is better to Sony
It would be great if you can comment on the mw dxing capability of the RF-2400D compare with Sangean's PR-D15.
I have never had them side by side, but I would wager the D15 is the better receiver on AM. It has a solid tuning circuit on MW and the 200mm ferrite antenna helps things along. The Panasonic is no slouch though.
Thanks for replying and I really appreciate your input. It's makes perfect sense since the Panasonic is so much cheaper. I recall you said the RF-2400D is excellent on AM so I'm just wondering how far off is it from a gold standard (D15). Also, I've just read from radiojayallen that the 2400D is a big improvement from the old 2400; seems like it really have a very good price-performance ratio. Tempting...
What is the battery time or life of this awesome transistor radio? Thanks
I never ran a set dry but I would give an educated guess at around twenty five to thirty hours.
Panasonic lists it at 55 hours for AM and 52 hours on FM with alkaline batteries(LR6) and 21 and 20 hours with manganese(R6) batteries at mid volume.
I wonder if because it only has one speaker is why the headphone jack is mono

My radio is really good on AM. It has a large ferrite bar inside too. If its not the 2400 D I would call Amazon and send it back. Even if you had the regular 2400 you should be able to pick up some AM stations, esp at night. Yours might be defective.
THANK you. It may be. I've been able to barely get a few fuzzy stations as the day has progressed, but oddly enough not the stronger stations in the city. It is the 2400 D btw.
Hey Todderbert.. would the Tecsun an200 loop be a good purchase with this Panasonic? Would it help?
Check out the Select-A-Tenna, it is a better passive loop, even if it looks like a trash can lid :) At eBay: bit.ly/Select_A_Tenna
