What i liked. Graphics. A coherent story, even if its a bit cliche (the numbered Ace Combat games are kinda cheesy) the "bitching bettys" that warned the pilot with the language of the aircrafts manufacturer. Actual fleashed out characters that you saw walking talking including the player character. Unique aircraft to include the inclusion of attack helicopters, VTOL jets, and heavy bombers. What I didn't like: The GAWD DAMN DFM! Gameplay was fun otherwise, man if they just had a option to turn DFM off...
I couldn't stop smiling through this entire gameplay all the memories flooded in, the hours the I would put into game was unbelievable the game is truly a masterpiece in my opinion the action, the story, the soundtrack it is so epic it just makes you want to play the game over and over again the multiplayer was fun but I didn't care for it much it'll be cool if there was a remake of this game (which is probably very unlikely) or at least available on the next gens this will be forever my favourite ace combat it will always hold a special place in the memory banks.
I gotta say the opposite. This was easily the worst entry in the series and shouldn’t have been released as an Ace Combat game. They absolutely butchered the controls and dumbed them down to the point that it bears zero resemblance to actual flight controls. The really threw physics out the window, and made destroyed the combat system to the point it doesn’t take much skill to get through the game. This was the only game I ever returned lol It did look good, I will give it that. But this is N64 level flying mechanics

I LOVE this game as an accessory to the mainline AC installments. It's like the Metal Gear Rising of Ace Combat, awesome action based spin off that leans into just raw style and fun while still carrying the spirit of the core franchise. And just like MGR, it's got it's own unique gameplay mechanics (Dogfight mode and Rising's slow motion precision cut mode) that you can utilize but totally play through the whole game without if you want to stay more pure to base fighting mechanics. I would say the only thing I would change is maybe keep with Ace Combat's original setting/lore rather than going real world with locations. MGS still works as a sequel to MGS4 and just evolves the combat to match the technological trajectory of Raiden beyond a stealth oriented soldier. Other than that I'd say Assault Horizon is a perfect off-shoot and loads of fun in every way!

Just an idea of how to make AH fit into the Ace Combat series. An extremely advance terrorist organization threatens all of Strangereal and cause an all out war. And so like all the other Ace Combat games, a single Ace manages to turn the tide of the war into the Allies’s favor. With the terrorist on the brink of defeat, their end seems inevitable. However, a group of the terrorist scientists develop some sort of “portal” machine that allows the organization to escape into our world. Once in our world, they begin to rebuild. Noticing our technological inferiority, they threaten our world with their world order. This is where Warwolf Squadron comes into play. Warwolf Squadron travels the world, desperately trying to defend our free world against a terrifyingly powerful, technologically superior, unknown enemy. Meanwhile, the Strangereal Ace pursues after the terrorist group and follows them into our world. The Ace and Warwolf Squadron’s first encounter isn’t too friendly as Warwolf tries to shoot the Ace down thinking it’s another member of the unknown terrorist group. However, after convincing Warwolf Squadron that they are not the enemy, the Ace and Warwolf join forces to bring down the terrorist organization. Under the guidance of the Strangereal Ace, the Ace and Warwolf slowly begin to reclaim back what’s ours and bring the terrorist group back to their knees, the player alternating perspectives between the Strangereal Ace and Warwolf. In the second to last mission, the Strangereal Ace is shot down by the enemy Ace and severely injured, leaving Warwolf as the only pilot potent enough to be able to shoot the enemy Ace down. In a showdown at Washington D.C, Warwolf uses the knowledge and tricks handed down by the Strangereal Ace to fight against the enemy Ace and ultimately shooting the enemy Ace down and winning the war. It’s just an idea. Not necessarily a good one but it’s at least something.

As much as hardcore fans say it bad, I’d beg to differ. The story is definitely decent enough to keep you engaged. And while the infamous DFM is a bit gimmicky, it’s a gimmick done right (mostly done right since some enemies require DFM to take down). The mission variety is very wide along with a wide selection of aircrafts. The soundtrack is definitely on point! The weakest part of this game is quite frankly the helicopter missions.

Back then the graphics were low quality as well as technological advancements so the QAAMs required you to keep the target within DFM to get a hit, play AC7 Skies Unknown you will notice that there is a big difference to tech.
It's obvious that Ace Combat Assault Horizon was highly influenced by the success of Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2. It was released at a time when many video game developers tried to make games even more cinematic. The Gamespot review said it best though. Games are not meant to be watched, they are meant to be played and Assault Horizon spent so much time trying to be a movie that it forgot to be a game.
Ah I also played this game; it was an ok game even though on my laptop it chugged like hell. Still it detracted from the Strangereal universe (a problem not rectified until Ace Combat 7).
The one thing that rubbed me the wrong way about DFM was that some of those TGT_LEAD targets had to be killed in DFM and it was incredibly hard or impossible to kill them any other way. you could do it though if you had a plane with SAAM's (i learned that if you attack from long range they can be destroyed normally)
@@jihigh482 its easy to learn but hard to master. The later dogfights prove that point by making the enemiy pilots much more mobile and flexible in their movement, i'm honestly embarrassed how many times i got shot down during those missions, at one point i just closed the game💀

Man, a Minigun like that will turn someone into a Swiss cheese
Alright maybe the gameplay sometimes make a headache, but its not bad at all, the character, story, graphic, and more it's the best enough maybe the story more better than ace combat 7 Why ? This is my opinion, because i play both of the game and i can say the story and character development is more better in assault horizon than ace combat 7, i actually need play again 2 and 3 times to understand every singel character and what is purpose of they are in ace combat 7 and sometimes isn't good enough than assault horizon
As gimmicky and staged as it was, I wasn’t really bugged by DFM… but I think that’s mostly because the other times I played Ace Combat (6 and 7) there were gimmicks with the giant machines and cartoonish antagonists along with forced invulnerability in the form of maneuvers to deal with… that or I just suck. Beyond that I’m more into Assault Horizon given how it breaks the mold from the formula. (Actual character for protagonist feeling more connected to the tale, no repetitive ‘war is bad’ themes while simultaneously praising you for being a murder machine, no over the top machines or cartoony antagonists.) Those aren’t bad on their own, just seems like that’s all the series seems to be with what I’ve seen on vids and my own experiences. That and aircraft breaking apart. Gives credence to the “make metal bleed” promo on its box. No I DON’T SEE!
Why is it that the only ace combat game set in semi-reality is the most unrealistic of all of them. Not that any are realistic but I would say the other ones are still way closer than this one.
As a huge FPS fan, that does not care too much about airplanes (but think they're cool anyway), this game is visceral and on par with the action you find with Doom Eternal
Ravenfield air combat is very similar to this you just roam around shoot missiles and guns and all that. but when you get on someone's 6 they are it is a lot like dogfight mode, visually atleast, except you do all the movements yourself
Remove DFM, turret missions, and you've gotten rid of the majority of the games issues, a remake. One thing not to change, the soundtrack, genuinely good, with...Two aged songs.
I know alot of the longtime AC fans have a special place in hell for Assault Horizon but I personally loved it to bits (I love the other AC games as well mind you!). I liked the quasi real world setting, I personally LOVED Dogfight mode sure it was kind of a scripted mini game but lets be honest firing missiles at stuff in other AC games is hardly the pinnacle of skill is it? I even liked the turret sections and AC-130 missions, sure they were basically rail shooters but they added to the overal cinematic feel of the game imo and thats what this game had in spades it, feels like your playing an action movie more than any other AC game to me and for what it is, its alot of fun! Oh and the music. Now I love the soundtrack in all the AC games but for me it has NEVER been better than this. Hell I still have the soundtrack disk from my old Xbox copy of the game in my car and play it from time to time (its dangerous though as it does rather make you want to put your foot right to the floor and end up getting pulled over for doing 120 MPH in a residential area :P
@@joshuablade6974 Too bad they didn’t have it be utilized as a STOVL like it’s designed. The way it was in the game they should’ve just used the A or C model like they did in other games. If you don’t know the difference the A is the Air Force variant no extra reinforced areas no folding wings no ability to take off or land from a carrier and no STOVL ability. The B is the STOVL(short take off vertical landing) variant. It can do takeoff from short runways then land vertically or take off vertically as well. The C is the carrier variant which has rein forced joints, landing gear, folding wings, and everything else needed to be able to withstand the stress of taking off and landing from a carrier. They put the F-35C in pretty much every game since AC5 even though when 0 took place the plan hadn’t even been developed yet so changing it to the B was a stupid move. At least in COD Black Ops 2 they made use of the STOVL function of the B.
@@joshuablade6974 It’s something that always bugged me about that game. Just like how in AC0 they only had the F-18C and then the Growler which sucks so in 6 they only had the Super Hornet with the Growler’s ECMP but was otherwise the regular Super. Though I can’t remember if it was the E or F.
By the way, even though its sadly been pulled from most stores due to licencing issues, and is simiarly not backwards compatible on modern consoles for similar reasons you CAN still get hold of a key for the steam version through various resellers and they still work (and once you own it on steam its valid even though its been delisted on the store :) Get a gamepad plugged into your PC though as playing this with keyboard and ouse is just... wrong....

You forgot to be an intelligent life form.
Pax Humana Some babies were dropped on their head, you were yeeted at a wall.
The game is a joy yo play you clown. Having cutscenes don't turn a game into a movie
If i wanted a game with no cutscenes, no meaningful story and just straight up gameplay, I'd play dark souls💀
Ah I also played this game; it was an ok game even though on my laptop it chugged like hell. Still it detracted from the Strangereal universe (a problem not rectified until Ace Combat 7).
Because it wasnt based in Strangereal like the main series, this is a spin off that takes place on our Earth.
@@Alexander9924 thats why I enjoyed it so much, because it could be something that (while not in the same scale as this game lol) could happen irl
It brings back the nostalgia 😌
damn this shit just gave me childhood memory's
Unapologetically love this game.
Me too, everything about it is perfect to me
the best ace combat gameplay, and better than ace combat 7 for me
When the most hated game in series is also one of the most awesome ones.
I wish Ace Combat would reintroduce the Dogfight Mode. This was very well done in that aspect
Fuck no, that shit is complete ass and it handholds the player in what is supposed to be an attack that requires skill
@@NerfMaster000 well some ppl play this game for fun not for tryhard
@@NerfMaster000 What exactly takes 'skill' in locking on and sending a missile?
@@jihigh482 its easy to learn but hard to master. The later dogfights prove that point by making the enemiy pilots much more mobile and flexible in their movement, i'm honestly embarrassed how many times i got shot down during those missions, at one point i just closed the game💀
The Apache portion needs to be a game on its own. I love those! Maybe make it more open like the Strike series
No played this yet but looks really good
When the game is being good but the most hated will become the most accurate in terms of what is going on around the world, by the time I wrote this comment.
12:00 is it just me or does Col. Will's rate of descent look like it's on pause. He doesn't look like he's going anywhere. That scene would be terrifying tbh
My favorite Ace Combat to date✊💛✊
1:44:10 Hey, that's my country nobody messes with my country and gets away with it
That's neat
@@andreamaul1603 thanks, because I born and raised in Dubai, United Arab Emirates
this game was way ahead of its time
Think so too bro, pity for all the negative criticism it got
Also, I forgot to mention the Helicopter missions, THOSE ARE A NIGHTMARE! The controls are completely stupid.
Never did play this all the way through. The DFM, man.
It was those show staffing runs that killed it for me. Took me right out of the action and never could get that excitement back
red circle + missile = perfect kill
Meaning no skill unlike every other game in the series where you have to work for kills
Man, this is THE game!
ikr you can play as a bomber or helicopter or gunship or as a fighter
that's what i am talking about
forget ace combat 7
this is the ultimate fun game
@@flak8842 but i guess forgetting Ace Combat 7 is not good thing tho, lol, but whatever.
anyway, yea, It's still good game despite some elements that tie to the series have been lost in this game.
@@artemisiabellashcroft5119 ace combat 7 is a fighter focused game
that's why i prefer the assault horizon for it's multiple aircraft that you can choose from
@@flak8842 that fact is really true, Ace Combat 7 lacks many Attacker aircrafts and also playable VTOL aircraft (Why?!) but fictional aircrafts made up for that.
Also, This is the ONLY game that allow you to play as Helicopter after you saw them as enemies like 100+ times.
@@artemisiabellashcroft5119 ik
But that doesn't mean that ace combat 7 is bad tho
It's just still a lot fun to play with a loads of missions
But the assault horizon got a lot more interesting missions and that's why it attracts my attention so much
Bro I played this since I was 7 this was so fun
I played this before I was born
"HULLICANE” is my favorite mission.
I checked something in Wikipedia, the ranks of William Bishop and Markov, Bishop's rank is Lieutenant Colonel and Markov's rank is Colonel that means Markov's rank is higher than Bishop's rank by one rank
Hamad Humaid no one asked my guy
@@rickyrich07 about what, my good friend?
After Bishop killed Markov his rank should have gone up if the game didnt end
@@RookFox makes sense
I was told this was just ace combat + call of duty, but now I see they got a little experiential.
Ace Combat + COD is the perfect way to describe this
@@joshuaholmes7929 Not really, as simple as it is COD is not a rail shooter, and that's basically what dog fight mod is. Everything else is normal Ace Combat with set pieces. Thematically the stories to tame for COD that likes to get it's anti-war message on with hallow revenge plots, and war crimes.
@@anthonywalker6268 you forget that Assault Horizon pretty much ripped off COD 4 and MW2.
@@joshuaholmes7929 Well, little over a minute into a cutsceen movie, and there is already a big deference. Soap is new at least to his spec ops unit, but Warwolf 1 ( I'm referring to his call sign since I don't remember Soaps full name) has been a piolet since we are told the Gulf War.
@@anthonywalker6268 Have you ever played this game? The AC130 segment from COD 4, the nuke being deployed, hell even Ghost’s iconic masks have all been ripped off from COD for Assault Horizon.
13:12 I think that's the M134 Minigun the high rate of fire is 2,000 to 6,000 rounds per minute it is used in many wars such as: Vietnam War, 3rd Indochina War, US Invasion of Grenada, US Invasion of Panama, Soviet-Afghan War, Falklands War, Gulf War, Operation Restore Hope, War in Afghanistan and Iraq War.
Man, a Minigun like that will turn someone into a Swiss cheese
They got an armored vehicle.
Correction they had an armored vehicle
Stagleishov just executed order 66!
If DFM was not in the game it wouldnt have been a bad game.
No it would have been a bad game just not a terrible horrible wretched monstrosity of a game
If you don't like it then don't activate it 🤷♂️
@@willyojay77 nice solution dumbass if only we didnt need dfm to actually be able to play the game.
It's a decent game. Not a good Ace Combat. And you don't necessarily need DFM 100% of the game.
@@willyojay77 there’s moments you’re forced to use it.
i love this game but missions are so fucking hard..
To be honest this is the most realistic ace combat
You should've turned on the subtitles, some of the convos are unhearable.
Alright maybe the gameplay sometimes make a headache, but its not bad at all, the character, story, graphic, and more it's the best enough maybe the story more better than ace combat 7
Why ?
This is my opinion, because i play both of the game and i can say the story and character development is more better in assault horizon than ace combat 7, i actually need play again 2 and 3 times to understand every singel character and what is purpose of they are in ace combat 7 and sometimes isn't good enough than assault horizon
For this being a 2011 game, it looks pretty good
Bro it's AMAZING
Good game and great background music ❤
Crazy watching this with how the world is right now
Why is it that the only ace combat game set in semi-reality is the most unrealistic of all of them. Not that any are realistic but I would say the other ones are still way closer than this one.
Still remember the campaign story like its the back of my hand
As a huge FPS fan, that does not care too much about airplanes (but think they're cool anyway), this game is visceral and on par with the action you find with Doom Eternal
Ravenfield air combat is very similar to this
you just roam around shoot missiles and guns and all that.
but when you get on someone's 6 they are it is a lot like dogfight mode, visually atleast, except you do all the movements yourself
Just ordered this game for ma ps3 this,ll go with ma other 3 ace combat games for ma ps2

Oh the nostalgia
Kickass gameplay...I just wish you flew the F-35B Lightnight II more as its my fav plane and VERY powerful for both Air and Ground Ops...sigh...
They did fly the F-35 in the mission where they were defending the base and had to land and refuel in the middle of it.
@@joshuaholmes7929 I forgot to put "more" when I made that comment. Editing now...fixed!
@@joshuaholmes7929 Uh...ok '^^ Interesting.

By the way, even though its sadly been pulled from most stores due to licencing issues, and is simiarly not backwards compatible on modern consoles for similar reasons you CAN still get hold of a key for the steam version through various resellers and they still work (and once you own it on steam its valid even though its been delisted on the store :)
Get a gamepad plugged into your PC though as playing this with keyboard and ouse is just... wrong....

why not? It's not a bad game by any means and (while some is) most of its hate is unjustified. Just because it's different doesn't make it bad ykw. It might've gone in a completely different direction than all the other ac games, but at the end of the day it was still fun as hell
