As ridiculous as the Fold may seem to some, I'm glad to see other phone manufacturers other than Apple doing the trend-setting. I got the Fold 5 recently, and have been loving it. They're really blurring the line between phones and small form factor tablets. Skipping multiple generations after I got my S10 was definitely worth it.

I personally really like how narrow the front screen is. It's perfect for one handed texting and typing, or looking at things that are meant to be tall, skinny, long, extra wide, etc. If you want to watch content open the phone up, that's what the screen is for. There's no reason to have a phone that has an outside and inside screen that are extremely similar with almost idential aspect ratios, they should be different so it serves more purposes. Also there were a few big internal upgrades not mentioned here - LPDDR5 upgraded to LPDDR5X, UFS 3.1 upgraded to UFS 4.0, Bluetooth 5.2 upgraded to 5.3, Qualcomm X70 chip with faster 5G (par of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 upgrade), and the hinge changed the dimensions to be 15% smaller when folded, definitely not "the same dimensions" and deserved more than a quick 2 second mention.

I just ended up using the tiny front screen the most, but couldn’t get over how terrible the cameras were compared to my note 20 Ultra (2 Years old when the fold 4 came out) I think as the price is so much more than an ultra, they need to increase the fold screens size and bring it up to ultra camera quality and I would be interested again. tooling and costs go down, margins go up. amassing buffer of warchest to compete on price or features when a competitor comes out
the moment one does, samsung wouldve milked the market dry in the interim. Why raise costs for no reason
also u forget everyone buys their foldable display tech from samsung, so nobody is going to compete without samsung releasing better foldable display tech. or at the very least they will be able to match it. So others have to compete with formfactor, which google and oppo have tried without much success
so i dont see anyone even coming close unless apple does it through pure brand recognition. until then samsung is going to milk the market

Speaking of specific app enhancements for the fold series- I've been playing a lot of minecraft on the fold. And I noticed a really cool effect thats produced by playing with the screen just slightly bent, and lining up the horizon with the crease. It gives the game a 3d aspect almost like a 3ds. Its not really possible to play like that though, because anytime you look around at all, the horizon no longer lines up with the crease. If Mojang would add in a "snap to horizon" setting in the game, so anytime your center of view got close enough to the horizon, it would snap to it, then this cool little quirk I found would become an awesome new feature.

I think it's fine to do incremental updates. I find it fascinating that Apple can keep the same form factor for years on in and everyone thinks that it's the best thing since sliced bread. When Samsung decides to make a change in its form factor it will come right on time and should have all the bugs worked out of it!
Great work Samung keep it up!

    • @gafarhere
      @gafarhere 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

The difference is Apple makes incremental updates related to camera mostly with one BIG new feature and nee SoC
And here is Samsung with hinge update, that sounds not exciting and “wow” as a camera update.
Flip 5s new outer screen is a biggest new feature that can be highlighted, hinge is not that much
Even the incremental updates should be noticeable and sound “loud” to the avg consumer

Having seen a fold 4 that gets daily use by someone that actually uses it , i wasn’t impressed , the plastic protective screen was a total greasy mess ( piss poor oleophobic coating ), the screen was already starting to split , and it wasn’t very old , it has no S pen silo , if you buy the case and S pen , it still has less functionality than a galaxy note or ultra, less battery life , less good camera , less durability , and higher cost , and shitty form factor too boot imo( front screen utterly useless for biggish hands).

Also, I just like opening it up if I feel cramped. That’s the point, right? Idk those are just my thoughts after using the fold 3 for the last few years.

They won't, but not for the reasons that the other commenters suggested. They want you to get the Pixel Fold. People don't realize this enough, but Google Pixel and Samsung are not competitors or rivals by any means. They make similar products, sure, but they heavily rely on each other. Google makes the operating system for Samsung and Samsung manufactures Google Pixel's chips, hinges, and displays. They will still be profiting at the end of the day if you buy a Pixel Fold instead.

I actually really enjoy the narrow-nature of my fold4, it's great for what the cover screen is mostly (at least in my case) used for. And that could be reading an article, scrolling through discrod, occasionally sendting texts, and other such things. Typing on the cover screen is okay, but I can always just open to the main screen whenever I want and use that whenever something isn't great for the cover screen, like a video, a game, or typing longer strings of text. I originally had a fold3, and the different aspect ratios of the fold4 is the main reason I upgraded, it made it easier to use.

I've read so many reviews comparing the Pixel Fold to the Fold 4, and how people like the outside screen better on the Pixel. Well guess what? 80% of the time, my Fold 4 is open. The other 20% is for me to read messages, do a quick scroll of a page/article/email. If I want make a reply to an email/msg that's more than a few sentences, I either use voice, orI unfold my phone! I actually find that a narrower phone fits into my pockets better.

I think they strongly believe in their design and are not going to allow the other folds change them. 5? Great redesign again... and atrocious LTE battery life.
5s? One of the best models ever. Introduced Touch ID.
6? Bit bendy. Prone to failure of the digitizer connection aka "touch disease".

While that phone was a brick, had bad battery life, and a very poor processor, I actually really enjoyed it overall, even with the seam between the screens.
I carried an extra battery with me if I needed more battery life and swapped it out mid-day.
Being able to queue up TH-cam videos on one screen while watching videos on the other was a game-changer for my content watching.
I wonder sometimes if the Echo's design would have given a better foldable sooner, but people didn't really pick up the phone at the time and Kyocera/Sprint's abundance of patents on the hinge tech probably kept it from ever being picked up in the market.

100% AGREED. I checked it out it person and I'm still on The fold 3 due to lack of improvements on the fold 4 but the fold 5 feels really cheaply made and the edges are sharper even tho it is thinner and lighter. The metal bar across the back has a samsung logo that looks etched on by laser where as on my fold 3 it's actually engraved. Very sad don't think I'll upgrade. will be waiting on fold 6.

Improving the hinge and putting a larger display on the front of the phone is pretty significant imo
