Some day (maybe today) being a talkshow host or guest will be considered an art…people will study it in college. These guys were just having fun on tv to hep everybody have a good time. It's like that with so many arts….When Shakespeare and Moliere wrote, theatre was not considered a high art, when Dickens wrote, magazine stories were not considered a high art, same for Chaplin with comedy films, Lucy and Jackie Gleason on tv….when Louis armstrong played, Jazz wasn't considered an art…..the best artists seem to be the people who were just unselfconsciously trying to entertain and make a living…..
Modern comedians are all about shock value, and people like Don RIckles and his generation were able to dish out the humour and take the comebacks too. Everyone is too concerned about not causing any degree of offence so the humour has become sterile and predictable.

He really was. The chemistry Don and Johnny had was incredible. The other part of their strong relationship was Johnny was known to place loyalty VERY high, and if a celeb wasn't loyal or did something that Johnny felt betrayal by, that celeb (e.g. Joan Rivers, etc.) was essentially dead to him, and he'd never speak to that person again. And Don had often said how much Johnny stood by him over the years, which made their relationship that much stronger, as they were great friends til the end.
I love watching Don Rickles with Johnny Carson together, they know each other so well! Don Rickles was certainly one of a kind, so quick witted! What a great show!

This cures my deepest depressions. Its comedic gold. Nothing...Nothing in todays Comedy world comes close to this master of insult jokes, Don Rickles. I wanted to go to Vegas some years ago and give him a visit, but he sadly died before I could muster up the cash for that trip.What a pitty. But he will not be forgotten and to this day, he is without a doubt the gold standard for this type of humor. Rest in Peace, you marvellous human being, Don.

Bill Cosby got in big trouble once because he said, as an outsider, Communion at a Catholic mass looked like individual pizza. He apologized, and it was forgotten. Jimmy the Greek was banned for life because he made an insensitive remark about black people and the history of slavery. One time, Don was on the show with Muhammed Ali, and started doing that African American voice imitation he does, and Muhammed was ready to punch him…Don backed down pretty quick. Don Imus was kicked off the radio for a year because he said a really bad remark about African American women athletes. Everybody apologized, but it was too late.

There are only two I've encountered who've had that brilliance: Don Rickles would be one (though, I never worked with him). Bobby Rivers is another. Bobby has that very same ability to take the moment as it exists and turn it into comedy gold!!

I have written comedy with successful comedians in the past. There are only two I've encountered who've had that brilliance: Don Rickles would be one (though, I never worked with him). Bobby Rivers is another. Bobby has that very same ability to take the moment as it exists and turn it into comedy gold!!

One of my favorite Don jokes ever is about how old men always have their mouths open because it’s so true 😂😂😂
Mark Shamer The best IMO was one interview on Craig Ferguson when he pointed out an old guy with his mouth open and he said “You can tell he’s old because the mouth can’t close” and does his mouth open face 😂😂😂 I almost cried.
