One of my favourite conductors - one of my favourite orchestras. We are fortunate to live in a time when performances such as as this can be filmed and recorded in this quality - and seen decades later. Thank you, WDR Sinfonie Orchester! ❤️

Another highly recommended interpretation and well-executed performance of this beloved Verdi overture, comparable to the one (available also on TH-cam) performed by the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano under the baton of Xian Zhang at a BBC Proms concert (2013). For this WDR Symphony Orchestra performance under Semyon Bychkov, allow me to point out the highly lyrical passage (melody taken from the opera) starting at 1:40 (enjoy how Bychkov phrased it; you might want to compare it with the BBC Proms version, which is also beautifully done by the Milano orchestra under Xian Zhang). However, the famous clarinet solo from the WDR (starting at 3:40 and ending at about 4:18) is clearer, more nuanced, and more beautifully executed than the same passage from the BBC Proms concert. The WDR (principal?) clarinetist reminds me of the legendary principal clarinetist Michelle Zukovsky with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra (before her retirement, she had been with the L.A. Phil for well over 50 years). Another passage worthy of notice is the one starting at about 5:52; here Bychkov picks up speed at the end of the passage, creating a tension (with a brief pause), paving the way for the "finale" (so to speak) of the overture. Bravo!

@@WDRKlassik You are most welcome, WDR! I have been a devoted audience of all WDR performances ever since I watched this WDR performance of Verdi's "La Forza del Destino" Overture. By the way, could you tell me the name of the lady playing the Principal Clarinet role? She was the one I mentioned in my comment (starting at 3:40). By the way, I also noticed that she played a prominent clarinet role in Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 (with WDR under the baton of Jukka-Pekka Saraste), especially the opening bars. Another of her superb clarinet playing appears in WDR's performance (under the direction of Semyon Bychkov) of "Till Eulenspiegel" by Richard Strauss.

Personally, I find that only two excellent masters among the greatest masters of classical and operatic music have been able to admirably tackle such a severe and tormented theme as that of giving voice to "Destiny".
Here I am referring to the immense Ludwig van Beethoven, with his immortal "incipit" of the 5th symphony, and to the "Swan of Busseto", Maestro Giuseppe Verdi, with this sublime overture.
