    🎉 Happy New Year. I read /listened to A Discovery of Witches and kind of hated it. I think the hype around it threw me off as to what to expect. I have since bought the book to take my time and give it another shot. Your synopsis of it is a bit more grounded and gives me hope of enjoying it!

    And Then There Were None and Murder On the Orient Express are top notch Agatha Christie. I've been planning to read more of her stuff, but I'm struggling to pick which ones I'm going to read (cuz I'm not reading all of her books.).

    I read "If we were villains" by your recommendation in December and OH MY GODS! That was a 5-star read, literally one of the best three books of the year (and this comes from someone who doesn't like thrillers), so thank you for that! Also reread "Hogfather" by Terry Pratchett, coz, honestly, nothing says Christmas spirit quite like DEATH in Santa Claus costume. Obviously.

    Christie wrote the books back when there were very few mystery books and while her plot style was original (or mostly unknown) it's been used ad nauseam since then by too many authors and TV crime shows. It makes the books too easy to decipher. But there are some really good ones and you should definitely keep trying her books, if only for the settings and character interactions. Also, try some Dorothy L Sayers too if you haven't already.
    Thanks for the tip about Caraval. I didn't know and it would have totally ruined it for me!! 😁

    I read The Hollow back in 2019 and had some similar thoughts, but I agree with the other reviews that this isn't her usual style and I recommend reading more from her!

    I know you try to do spoiler free reviews but, having read the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness MULTIPLE times, I am so interested in knowing where you think the story is going.
    And the wine thing, yeah, Harkness is a a wine blogger in her spare time along with being a historian herself...so she wrote what she knew.

    🎉 lat book i finished was the toll by Neil shusterman- gave it 4 stars i started what I thought would be a quick read for a final book (140 pages) but the type was so tiny it ended up being my first finish of 2022 - final fantasy xiii-2 fragments after by jun eishima, 4 short stories that run concurrent to the game following side characters, another 4 star big nostalgia hit i love the game

    I wish reviewers would take books for the time period that they are written. Common tropes that you are familiar with came from Agatha Christie, don’t be surprised when you read a book that was written years ago that you recognize the trope, the way it was written or that it is politically incorrect. Read it and appreciate it for the time it was written.

      Hi, I studied literature and am very familiar with reading books and analysing/reviewing them according to the time they were written, especially regarding the modern day vs contemporary audiences that received them. This is why the only negative out of all the things I listed as being relevant to the time it was written was that I recognised a trope that took away any surprise factor for me, as this is the only thing that had a direct impact on my experience. This also took into consideration reviews from readers nowadays and their reactions, to which I didn’t get the same reaction despite not reading many murder mysteries beforehand. Reviews are subjective, and so will be influenced by a readers enjoyment. I’m not writing essays about historical context for my videos I’m afraid 🤷🏻‍♀️

    I've always loved Agatha Christie's books but it's true that some of them are dated and it's easy to figure out the plot twists, but I'm pretty sure you will be surprised with the ending of And Then There Were None!!!

    • @AFrolicThroughFiction
      @AFrolicThroughFiction  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope so! I didn’t want to go in with too high expectations considering how old they are (so shock factor wouldn’t be the same as original audiences) but since so many still love them now I want to feel the same 😂
