Maruti Swift vs Volkswagen Polo
Maruti Swift has been amongst the best selling hatches in the country due to its styling coupled with fun to drive engines. VW entered the segment with its iconic polo in early 2010. The polo has been updated to keep up with the times and featuring new diesel engine too.
Design and Exteriors :
Inspired from its predecessor, the Swift carries same styling like the swept back headlamps, flowing tail lamps and the sloping roof line. The Polo, on the other hand, is with no excessive lines or creases anywhere on the body of the hatchback. The front gets smoked headlamps, an updated grille and an updated bumper which houses fog lamps with cornering function. The side remains relatively unchanged while the rear sports updated tail lamps and a redesigned bumper.
Interiors :
The Swift interior include dull silver accents around the AC vents, the steering wheel and the door bags to keep things lively. The all black theme looks nice, but it makes the cabin feel smaller than it actually is. The high line variant on the Polo features a dual tone interior. The center console is finished in dull silver which complements the beige (lower half) and black (top portion) combo very well. Both the cars are more driver oriented and are not great for rear seat passengers. Though the head room isn’t an issue either, leg room is rather forgettable in both the cars. Also, both cars are better 4 seaters as 3 people won't be comfortable in the rear bench of either. The front seats are good on the Polo but are better on the Swift. The position and cushioning continue to remain unparallel. The steering on the Swift can be adjusted only for height while the Polo gets a reach and rake adjustment. It is much easier to find a more comfortable driving position in the Polo as compared to the Maruti. Both cars get an integrated music system with Bluetooth, USB, and Aux connectivity. The music and the calls can be handled by the buttons on the steering wheel on either car. With the facelift VW introduces the flat bottom steering wheel on the Polo, having the best steering wheel in the segment. The level of kit offered on either car is similar. The Polo misses out only on keyless go. Amongst the two, the Swift has a better looking cabin. The Polo is clutter free and some might even call it boring, except for the steering wheel.
Engine and Performance :
The Swift is available with two engine options. A 1.2 liter K series petrol (84.3 PS) and a 1.3 DDIS diesel (75 PS) engine. The diesel motor is better in terms of drivability and efficiency. The Polo is available with a 1.2 liter, 3 cylinder petrol engine producing 75 PS of power and a 1.5 liter TDI diesel churning out 90 PS of power. The diesel engine not only is fun to drive but is also frugal, so it wins. The steering on either car is extremely responsive and direct. The Polo steering is brilliantly used in the city and works well on the highways. Both the cars are driver oriented. The suspension set up on either car is on the stiffer side. Claim fuel efficiency figures for the Swift are 20.4 kmpl for the petrol and 25.2 kmpl for diesel. The Polo petrol returns 16.47 kmpl while the diesel averages 20.14. The diesel variants of both cars suffer from turbo lag right up to 2000 rpm. The power and the driving dynamics are extremely good for the hatchback Polo. The engine is fun to drive and doesn’t feel out of grunt on the highways.
Verdict :
Among the two hatches, the Polo feels better to drive. It is really well put together too. The quality of materials used is similar to that on the more expensive side. Yes, it does miss out on features like electronically folding mirrors with blinkers, keyless entry and go and even has lesser leg room at the back. But the ride is extremely comfortable and the hatch has a fun to drive element to it.

I've read on forums about VW Service Centers to be very, very disappointing. Mainly in terms of cost of service, delayed availability of parts, etc. In this one aspect, Maruti is known to be a winner nationwide.
Is it true in your case as well? How would you sum up the experience you've had so far? I understand that VW Polo would always be more expensive to maintain than the swift. Also, Polo being my favorite in the segment, my only concern is cost of ownership in the long run.

My brothers own a swift ZDI and my sis own polo highline basically both are top variants. Being the youngest in the house I get to drive both very frequently and somehow I"m the one who takes these cars to service centers as well. Let me share my opinion basis on the ownership and key factors.
BUILT QUALITY- Polo wins
Average- Swift
Safety - Polo
Driving fun - Polo
Maintanance cost - Swift but Polo requires a service at 15000 km so not too much difference.
Interior- I prefer Polo but that is subjective.
Boot space- Polo
I feel Polo wins clearly and that is not biased. My family owns both and I own none of these.

Polo interior is far better than Swift.Swift interior is cheap plastics .There is a difference between chrome and brushed aluminum finish.The switches and knobs are too good in polo.Im terms of drive quality, swift may have a responsive engine but the steering feedback in polo is awesome . From the leagues of Audi and BMW. Drive past 100 Km/hr and you will find the difference .

I bought new polo 1.2 L high line petrol last year , after few long drives kinda repenting it , the 3cyl engine doesn't feel good , its very noisy and has noticeable turbo lag at higher speeds..its good for city driving though. After watching this video i wish i had bought the GT variant or at least the 1.5 l diesel engine :(

Polo petrol vs swift petrol review ---- Both are very good cars. But i chose swift petrol because polo petrol has engine noise which enters the cabin. Polo also has a turbo lag initially which the swift doesnt have. Swift has been a market leader in hatchbacks since it was lanched in 2005. As im 5 foot 10 inches in height i felt the polo was a little short for me. As far as the looks go i chose the swift because it looks sporty and looks distinctive where as the polo's design looks minimalistic. I like the design for vw vento over the polo. Swift also gives better mileage on highways averaging upto 18.4 kmpl. I really like the build quality of polo as it feels solid and sheet metal is thick. One of the feature polo lacks is automatic climate controls. Anyways it all comes down to personal taste. So ride both cars and decide which one suits you best.

2) You are giving a review about petrol cars by mentioning polo has a turbo lag and the swift doesnt. I don't see any kind of turbo charge mated in either of these cars. Polo GT TSI have one and its first in the segment.
3) You like the design of POLO over the VENTO? I don't see any kind of difference between those two rather than a hatchback and sedan.

5) Polo lacks automatic climate control? Are you basically referring to the trendline or comfort line? Coz both Swift ZXI and polo highline will get automatic climate control.

Stop watching paid reviews. Cars like VW Polo come and go like the numerous Hyundai hatchbacks earlier. Swift has stayed the test of time for over 10 yrs.
Swift is way better when it comes to power within the same segment. Also keeping in mind the longevity, Swift is way cheaper when it comes to spare parts and maintenance. Its no joke to have been the best seller for a decade even when Polo entered the Indian market in late 2010. Whatever sells the most is the best when it comes to India because people look for value for money for anything they buy.
People who go for brands apart from MS ARE totally fooled for the unnecessary luxury provided in other cars compromising on engine and power. Also the fact they want to look "different". Maruti Swift will keep ruling the Indian market when it comes to hatchbacks bcos of its great history and of course the fact that it is Indian. I'd rather stay away from small comparisons to be honest.

Polo comes from a brand Volkswagen which is one of the most desirable brands in the world. It has a large portfolio of cars..including the Porshe,Lamborghini,Audi,Bentley,Ducatti,Skoda and more. It has even a lot of stake in Suzuki motors. Since Volkswagen become the world number one car brand in 2015 overtaking Toyota, It's no brainer that it will fully take over Suzuki in a couple of years as well. Germans don't cut corners when it comes to safety and engineering. The global swift comes preloaded with loads of features where the Indian variant gets the basics. An outsourced mutijet weany 1.3litres diesel block from Fiat which produces a meagre 75ps. Suzuki knows their brand is not considered a luxury brand. To change this image, to compete with Volkswagen, they are opening NEXA outlets to sell their S crosses and YRA hatchbacks.They are even planning to re badge their car to show only suzuki and not maruti suzuki. Drive a Polo GT TSI Or TDI..Feel the difference..

Global brand, european company and what not.Remember the time when cars like Skkoda Octavia, Laura were seen a lot on indian roads. Do you really think any brand can takeover the Maruti Suzuki, we've been saying this for decades. The NEXA outlets you speak about are certainly a step up on the marketing and customer service area. You cannot judge the actual product based on that, i'm sorry. Talking about Polo TSI ,TDI these two models are way more expensive than the highest model of the swift. I would rather pay so much money to enter a different segment of mid large size car such as the Renault duster etc to get a significantly bigger car rather than pay it for a relatively small car such as the Polo. In the same segment Swift is much driver friendly , more power , cheaper maintenance etc. Polo might loaded with a lot of features but Im pretty sure one can live without some extra luxury by getting a better engine and performance.
Talking about user experience Im a proud owner of a Swift Vxi 2015 model and a very good friend of mine who lives a few blocks away owns a Polo comfortline. We go out on a drive frequently and even though u might think I maybe a bit partial bcos I own the Swift, we both know which car we prefer when we like to spin around the city and outside city. Swift is always our first choice. The comfort in driving, the elevated height of the driver seat gives u a feel of driving a SUV. We have both come to agree that swift is way more comfortable and joy to ride. So the next time you go as far as calling a best selling car cheap , I hope u might wanna rethink. Putting it in one line if one wants to show different than the common perception that MS is cheap then he will go for a VW Polo where he will end up paying more for the luxury sacrificing on the pure joy and user friendliness of the Swift. And that applies for any other car. You only pay for luxury. I hope my comment helps.

Both have their own capability but one word when you come to the point selection, i would like to suggest you guys if you are Driving enthusiasts, the right way choose a VW POLO .. if you are a transporter for your daily needs in town choose MS SWIFT. I own a POLO, its been 2 years .. 1.2TDi still feel the #Rocket under the hood .. After your second service the car handles pretty ballistic sports version like everyday... German Engineering is precise and more good than others... Practically its true.. and no one can refuse it... i heard my friends had braking issues in SWIFT at range of 130kmph .. it starts to skid even in the highways.. Whatever drive safe !! Wear your Seatbelts ... :)
