I like to see the confession to Sarah as being genuine because he always used some sort of performance as the barrier between himself and the other person. No one was able to understand the real Hitch, as it was all very calculated. So the first time we see these barriers down, Hitch has to put up a physical one, seen through the door between his confession and Sarah. He isn't really face to face with her, and you still see a struggle when he does see her face and tries to explain himself. He still needs that barrier, even if he's speaking truthfully.
this was the third video essay i ever made; it is getting some unexpected traction in the algo right now so i just wanted to make a quick amendment. i think if i wrote this video today, i would have spoken more about how all identities are continuously constructed and there is no one “true self” as Hitch seems to purport by having Hitch revert back to his goofy college self. i don’t necessarily think that Hitch was lying to manipulate Sara in the end, but i do think that the idea that someone could have a “fake” persona that’s “not the real them” is a bit deceptive, because what are we if not the shape we take through our interactions with others? i think ultimately Hitch can be both: a manipulative womanizing chad AND a goofy vulnerable simp. it is almost always a mistake to think about identity in mutually exclusive binaries. thanks for watching and reading! I think it was genuine. His convo with Allegra gave him permission to quit trying to be what he thought women want and just be himself. Yes he is far removed from that college kid but as an awkward person myself I can identify with feeling like I have to be “on” and the relief of Turing that off when I know people can take it

this used to be (andstillkindofis) one of my favourite saturday morning movies that they would play on the tv channels and i never really understood why. i dont generally like romcom hollywood to the extent where i would search for them on netflix and half the time, i barely even remember the names for them. but i always remembered Hitch, and i think you managed to perfectly describe the reason why i did.
now i can’t decide if i would love or hate to see a modern update of hitch about a youtube relationship guru. i actually think it could be a solid send-up in the right hands, but i’m not sure who else besides will smith could pull off making that kind of character likable 🤔

And yet even when she refused to apologize, he went to her to make her understand the situation. Even after all that he went after her (something he swore himself he'll never do EVER again) at the risk of being hurt again by her quickly moving on ,still he chases after her and almost gets run over. So..YESSS!!It's GENUINE.Just that the poor guy has to go the extra mile of 'performance' to convince her of his heart. "This!, is why falling in love is SOO hard".This line is what truly conveys the message and the scene in which it is said is probably better than the ending.

Just a note that we don't know what the interaction between Hitch and the unnamed woman at the bar was. We didn't get to see. Does he take the two of them back to the pool table and just have a good convo between them, him, and Colin? He tells Vance "hit it and quit it" is not his style, and it's very possible that he _means_ that, but like Albert points out at the end, he's afraid to really let himself fall in love again. So he makes it happen for other men, facilitating their happy endings, and he thinks that is enough for him. Also, I think it's overstating things to say that the whole dog-saving issue is a way for the guy to ask that girl out. It was just a way for the guy to get noticed by this woman who he obviously knows from all their time together doing Shakespeare In The Park shows, but maybe he has never had the courage to try to initiate a convo with her, and she evidently hasn't noticed he's around often. The first interaction is just so the guy gets seen, so she notices he is alive. And obviously, since this is a rom-com, the first interaction in this case is way over the top.

Great video, very interesting analysis on the dynamics of the characters. My only objection would be about the part with the dog. It is certainly not endangered in any way, It could be argued that it gets into a stressful situation, but it seems to be calm and relaxed as far as we can tell. The morality of the actions is still questionable as they seem to be deceitful, however not going as far as to cause harm to other people or animals.
